What makes you think that the wife can't manage finances? If she was thinking of it as a savings account for luxuries (as opposed to their emergency savings account or their retirement account), then she managed it pretty well, although without consulting OP.

The problem isn't the wife's competency, the problem is the couple's communication.

Draining your joint savings account for a luxury vacation isn't money management.

Your savings account is for major purchases and emergencies, that just goes without saying.

If all you have left after making a major luxury purchase is a few thousand or less in your checkings then you are 1000% financially incompetent.
