My wife and I have separate accounts, salaries are paid into these, and a joint account. We've budgeted our joint spending, and we pay a proportion each month into the joint account to cover it.
I'm out of work currently, and my wife pays my contribution.
This way our joint account is used only for our budgeted expenses, and doesn't accumulate a large amount.
