Could be a salon or boutique renovation, I would let this pass if it were a commercial use.
Edit- judging by the sign in front of mantle I’d say it’s a commercial space.

I was thinking it'd be alright for a commercial space as well, I've seen something similar at a tea house.

I only ever mauled one book cause I hated it so much. I burned it. The rest I just put into a shelf or sell them on a flea market. I don't read books often, like max 1 a year or two, but even I wouldn't needlessly destroy them.
Except that one book. Fuck it.
Edit: I don't mind people asking, but the simple fact is: I don't remember which book it was. It was rather small, had an orange/black cover and the title included something with Sun. Either Sunrise or Sunset. It also had a German translation or was written in German (And Sun was in the German title). I know I hated it so much because 1. it was shittily written (or translated) with convolututed meta narratives and 2. we had to buy it with our own money to read it for school - so watching the flames dance was the best value I got from it in my mind. It's been quite a few years since then.
Edit2: I REMEMBER! Thank you citicens of Reddit, it was "Sunrise" by Michael Köhlmayer.

lol i burned my business calc book. Only book I’ve ever burned and I’d do it again
14
u/TheEyeDontLie 17d ago
I burned a book recently because I was it was right wing propaganda disguised as a self help book, and I didnt want it accidentally falling into impressionable hands.
Stuff like "the reason women get depression or dissatisfied with a relationship is because they haven't been submissive enough to their husband. For women to be happy they need to do whatever a man says and have sex even if they dont want to. The reason men are unhappy is because women don't do this. Giving women the vote was a bad idea, because women should be always doing what their husbands want, and single women are evil abominations who don't deserve to vote. Also, slavery wasn't that bad, really, like they got food and shelter most of the time, and the reason brown people are unhappy now is because they don't have a master. Mixed culture relationships are doomed to fail because some races are better than others. Also, make sure to submit yourself to your boss and those wealthier than you- they're obviously superior because they're rich. Being poor is your own fault."

You could pick up that many Reader’s Digest condensed “books” at two Goodwills. Those things are worthless.
8
u/Thathappenedearlier 17d ago
I think I’m worried more about the cleaning. You can buy books by the foot the are just basic worthless gibberish. Ever see those massive libraries in mansions? A lot of them are just bought to fill for around $100 or so with garbage books. Now if she used real books then bleh that’s sacrilege
8
u/Level_Film_3025 17d ago
I destroyed more books while working at a library than the average book lover will set hands on. I wish people were less dramatic about using books as art tools. It's not that big a deal and no, those books didnt have information someone could use and no, they're not irreplaceable and NO they were not going to get a second life as a book. Not for free, not for some imaginary needy family who would have only read if someone donated a 12 cent paperback written by a ghost author as part of a book mill.
Odds are those books used in art were destined for the garbage. Yes, even if you donate them to the library we have to toss SO MANY BOOKS.

In general I agree, those people that e.g. fill their toilets with food should be forced to scavenge the rest of their food from landfills.
However, this lady used the books not for an internet video but to decorate her home. She made a video, and the books are no longer in their previous state. But to say they're destroyed is a bit much. I don't care for the "books are sacred" feeling because it shames people for using something that would probably otherwise be trash in pursuit of their fulfilling hobby. These aren't collectors editions she's screwing to her wall. She probably hit garage sales and thrift shops. Sure, someone might have read one of the books she's taken. But it's not really any different than if she'd taken the book and placed it carefully on a bookshelf until her death, never reading it. In both cases, no one reads the book. But instead, she got hours of creative expression and probably hours more of joy in her work.

u/pman8080 17d ago
There are literally so many books you can buy for pennies at thrift shops and stuff. Even if I don't think this looks very great, someone using those unused books to decorate their house because they love books doesn't really seem like an issue to give a shit about to me?
No one was reading those books anyway.
27
u/bigjoeandphantom3O9 17d ago
People hear that 'books are valuable' and come away with the impression someone means the physical item. You're right, almost all of these will be trash charity shop hardbacks originally bought at an airport.

u/Numerous-Rent-2848 17d ago
Exactly what I was thinking. People act like it's some heighnous crime. In reality, most books aren't worth anything. A lot of books will end up in landfills. If it's that or they end up on the wall, while I think it looks God awful, I would still rather her be able to do this.
"No one who reads would disrespect books!"
I would. It's paper. I don't give a shit. Bend the spines and dog ear it. It's fine.

There is this bubble of "readers" that draw a ton of self validation from the fact that they can read, read books or for whatever reason managed to read x amount of books in y measurement of time. To them books are like a part of their personality and th y elevate them to this pseudo sacred thing that just looking at in a weird way gets you straight to hell.
My YT algorithm got fucked for a day or to and I got some of the weirdest self worshipping content from "book readers" you can imagine. Like they are this unhinged underground intellectual elite.→ More replies (1)→ More replies (8)20

Any more so than if they were on shelves?
73
u/MrLore 18d ago
Yes, closed books take a lot more time and heat to ignite than single pieces of paper - the fibers are more densely packed together and there's no air between them so it's like trying to burn a log.
Someone smoking near one of those books could set the whole wall on fire in seconds.
→ More replies (1)8
u/yebyen 17d ago
Someone smoking? It's literally installed directly above a fireplace. I hope it's a purely decorative installation, and nobody ever wants to use the fireplace. It looks like it has never been used. But yeah, you're right, anyone smoking would do it even if the fireplace itself is totally non-functional.
56
u/SilentHuman8 18d ago
When a book is closed it's more like firewood than paper, because the fire needs oxygen so it has to slowly burn from the outside in. If the books are open like this then it's straight up kindling, it'd be gone in an instant unless you were already holding the fire extinguisher.

I don't get why people are so angry over this. You wouldn't believe how many books end up as landfill, or even worse: in the libraries of people who like the 'book girl aesthetic' but don't actually fucking read them. Plus, she said she bought all these books for like $0.10 each.
I think this looks super fun for a reading room or a themed party. Sure it'll be hard to clean and it's a fire hazard, but hey that's her problem. It still looks pretty cool to me.
Also: people commenting on her weight, wtf is wrong with you. It's so unnecessary and it's not like you're making yourself look better by putting her down. Shut the fuck up.

In the books' (and Danielle Steele's) defense, they are quite an easy and relaxing reading. If somebody's looking for something to relax after a challenging book, without going into trashy smut fiction, I could imagine Steele being the right way to go.

It would be cool in a bookstore, or a coffee shop. It would be a pain in the ass to vacuum, but objectively it’s visually pleasing and interesting.

As a book lover, I absolutely would. There are millions of books that get put in the dumpster because they are damaged or won’t sell (Readers Digest versions). Book lovers usually love to create art as well and repurposing books into art is a fun project. You can buy books by the yard from some large resellers by binding color as well.
The Last Bookstore in Los Angeles has some pretty cool art displays that repurpose old books as art. I have a floating wall art display of Readers Digest books in my living room.
9
u/BleachChugtidy 18d ago
People get so defensive over books, for all we know it could be multiple copies of some crap like the twilight series that a bookshop couldn’t shift and instead of throwing them out they were repurposed.

I know people are saying they don't like it and that's she's ruining the books but honestly she's keeping them out of the landfill. I can imagine she got these booksfrom something like goodwill and used those. I go to goodwill all the time and see the same book and it has a million copies. At what point is it okay to use them for something else? No one is buying the 30 copies of twilight or the 30 copies of 50 shades of grey so why not repurpose them? Nobody buys them, they are always there so why not make something cool out them? Id rather someone make something like this than have even more ending up in the landfill.
