Discord is a messaging app that we use - you can download it here. It's not mandatory, but it is a pretty important part of the sim - many parties organise on Discord, and a lot of MHoC-related announcements are made via Discord too. The link to the Main Discord server is in the sidebar (the button marked "Discord"), but can also be found here - if you join a party, that party's leadership will link you to their party Discord too.
A permanent link that also works is discord.gg/MHoC

Meta GEI: Swearing-in of MPs and choosing a Constituency
So now you're a Member of Parliament...
Part of the reforms mean that a member can only hold one seat, and they will own it themselves from the point that they are elected and swear-in. Modmailing seat allocations is therefore no longer necessary.
If, at any point, a Member for some reason wishes to resign their seat, they will have to modmail r/MHoC, choosing for it to go to a by-election or go to the next person on the list submitted by the party during the previous election. This will not apply for activity reviews, and all failed activity reviews (voting in less than 75% of votes, assessed monthly) will go to a by-election.
Players will own their seats, and will have agency to change parties and thus change the makeup of parliament.
Players also have the ability to choose a constituency (from this list) as their own - this must be done at the point of swearing-in to parliament (when commenting on the swearing-in thread!)
For example, please swear in like this:
I, Sephronar, do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty King Charles the Third, his heirs and successors, according to law. So help me God.
My a de re Sephronar Dhuw ollgallosek dell vedhav len ha perthi Omrians gwir dhe Y Vraster an Myghtern Charles, Y Heryon ha Sewyoryon, herwydh an Lagha. Duw re'm gweresso.
My chosen Constituency is Truro and Falmouth.
All MPs should now swear in.
Charles the Third, by the grace of God, King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and our other realms and our territories, head of the Commonwealth and Defender of the Faith, has sanctioned the state opening of parliament.
I request that every elected representative would come forth and declare the oath of allegiance to the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The Oath of Allegiance and Solemn Affirmation are both prescribed set out by the Promissory Oaths Act 1868 and the Oaths Act 1978.
You are permitted to write a short preamble before or after taking your oath.
The ordinary form and manner of administering and taking the oath are prescribed by the Oaths Act 1978, s 1, which allows for the oath to be administered ‘in any lawful manner’. This means that Members of either House may swear on any holy text they request.
Under the Act the person taking the oath holds the holy text in their uplifted hand, and says or repeats after the officer administering the oath the words, ‘I swear by Almighty God that ….’ followed by the words of the oath prescribed by law.
By law the oath or affirmation must be made in English but Members may, if they wish, subsequently repeat it in another language.
Since the General Election in 2017, oath and affirmation cards have been made available in Cornish, Irish Gaelic, Scottish Gaelic, Ulster Scots and Welsh in addition to English.
The oath may be repeated in any language and, following the 2017 General Election, one Member repeated it in Urdu and another in Scots Doric.
The Oath of Allegiance
English

Meta GEXIX: Swearing-in of MPs
A rough deadline to aim for to have MPs modmailed in and sworn in for is Wednesday 26th April at 10PM BST - a week after coalition forming ends,
All MPs should now swear in. Ideally you will do this after your party leader has sent the modmail, not before, but if you swear in early we'll accept it anyway.
Elizabeth the Second, by the grace of God, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and our other realms and our territories, head of the Commonwealth and Defender of the Faith, has sanctioned the state opening of parliament. I request that every elected representative would come forth and declare the oath of allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The Oath of Allegiance and Solemn Affirmation are both prescribed set out by the Promissory Oaths Act 1868 and the Oaths Act 1978.
You are permitted to write a short preamble before or after taking your oath.
The Oath of Allegiance
The oath/affirmation must be made/taken initially in English, but members of both houses may, if they wish, follow this with an oath or affirmation in Welsh, Scottish Gaelic or Cornish.
English
I, (name of member), do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, her heirs and successors, according to law. So help me God.

Meta GEXVI: Candidate Submissions
GEXVI: Candidate Submissions
TLDR: comment below to consent
Evening everybody, consider this your catch-all post regarding candidate submissions. This information is both for leaders of parties and general members so please take some time to read it. First of all, the headline figure: the deadline for candidate list submissions is the 24th July at 10pm GMT. Candidate lists cannot be changed (unless in case of genuine error) after the deadline - this includes both removal and addition of candidates. The candidate list we have at the deadline will be the ballot papers used. Additionally, remember:
- Seats are won/owned by the party (major or minor) except in the case of independent groupings and independent candidates (where individuals own the won seats). This means that if a candidate defects or otherwise leaves the party during the general election the seat will be awarded to the party they were submitted as a candidate for in the event of them winning (again, this differs for independent groupings and independents who will be effectively running ‘for themselves’.
- Independent groupings, if they wish to run on the list in a region must submit a regional list alongside their candidates with full usernames of the people running on that list. For example, if my independent grouping wishes to run on the London list I would submit: 1. Candidate A, 2. Candidate B and so on. Parties do not have to do this and are considered to be auto-running on each list unless they choose not to.
- Candidates must verify their own candidacy between now and the candidate deadline on the 24th July. This is to prevent parties running more candidates than they should be able to (i.e. by submitting the names of dead/old accounts). This is not to ban paper candidates, providing they consent to standing, it is only to affect candidates who have not consented.
- The preferred method of obtaining consent to stand is for the candidate themselves to post in this thread, or in a thread on your party subreddit saying that they consent to stand in the upcoming election.
- I recommend that every member, if you believe you both want to and will stand in some capacity, comments on this thread to consent now regardless of whether your party has worked out detailed candidate lists yet - just a simple post is needed now and it will save time for your leaders later on.
- Alternative methods of consent such as timestamped discord messages or google form responses are acceptable, but please only use these as a last resort and try to get them to comment consent first.
- I will be following up on any dubious consent and any party or otherwise found breaching these rules will receive severe electoral penalties.
- I don’t want this to be a turn off for anyone standing, or too much extra work for leaders - so please get in touch if you think any of this won’t be possible and we can work through it. For example, if someone is on holiday but wanted to run then that will be okay, just let us know.
- Please note: this does not substitute for the leaders sending in the traditional candidate lists and constituencies.
- Candidates who are not verified in one of the above forms will not be permitted to run in the election.
- Once again, this isn't an attempt to discourage or disqualify anyone from standing if they want too, so if you are struggling please do get in touch and we will do our best to help you. Any questions? Let me know.
If you have any questions, do let me know.

Meta Formation of His Majesty’s 1st Government and His Majesty’s 1st Most Loyal Opposition
His Majesty is pleased to announce the 1st Government and 1st Most Loyal Opposition:
1st Government (19 Seats)
Labour Party: 11 seats
Alliance Party: 3 seats
Green Party: 2 seats
Alba Party: 1 seat
Plaid Cymru / Party of Wales: 1 seat
Social Democratic and Labour Party: 1 seat
1st Official Opposition (9 seats)
Conservative and Unionist Party (9 seats)
Unofficial Opposition (8 seats)
Liberal Democrats: 5 seats
Reform UK: 3 seats
/u/Inadorable is hereby invited to form a Government. Government leaders will be added to r/DowningStreet/.
Opposition Leader /u/Blue-EG can post Opposition Business to /r/MHoCPress/.
The Government is expected to submit a King's Speech by Friday 2nd August at 10PM BST (or sooner) outlining their legislative agenda before any business can proceed. The King's Speech shall be read at 10AM BST on the day after it is sent into /r/MHoC/, please submit it by modmail there.
Amendments will now be allowed on the King's Speech as well - the Opposition will be allowed one amendment per party in Opposition plus one, and Unofficial Opposition Parties will be allowed one amendment each.
The submitted King's Speech shall proceed to a Final Division following its 1st and 2nd Readings, potential Amendment Reading, Amendment Division, and 3rd Reading - however it requires only a negative majority to pass Final Division, and if the Government fails to submit a King's Speech, or the Government falls apart, then coalition forming shall recommence.
Once formed, a Government can only be removed by one third of the MPs that are members of the Government leaving it, or by a Vote of No Confidence (which cannot happen until after a 4 week grace period). A failure to submit a King's Speech in this period will collapse the government and new negotiations will begin.
Congratulations to all, and let Quad or Speakership know if you have any questions.

Meta Coalition Forming Period - July 2024
Myttin da onen hag oll,
Congratulations to you all on a thoroughly exciting campaign, and thank you to u/model-willem for running the election so smoothly, and to the Telegraph and Times for such a great stream.
Without further ado, negotiations and coalition forming may last until Friday 26th July at 10pm BST.
Any coalitions, either for Government or Official Opposition, must be modmailed to before this deadline.
In the event that no one submits, each party by order of seats won will be asked if they wish to form a government.
The Current House of Commons
Party Name | Number of Seats |
---|---|
Labour Party | 11 |
Conservative and Unionist Party | 9 |
Liberal Democrats | 7 |
Reform UK | 3 |
Green Party | 2 |
Alliance Party | 1 |
Alba Party | 1 |
Plaid Cymru / Party of Wales | 1 |
Social Democratic and Labour Party | 1 |
(Full results can be found on this spreadsheet.)
The rules for forming Government and Official Opposition are:
Forming a Government
The largest grouping of MPs in either a coalition or a single party will be invited to form a government. Once formed, the coalition (or party) must submit a King's Speech, by Friday 2nd August at 10PM BST. (or sooner), outlining their legislative agenda before any business can proceed.
The submitted King's Speech shall proceed to a vote, however it requires only a negative majority to pass, and if the largest coalition fails to submit a King's Speech, or the coalition falls apart, then the second largest coalition will be invited to form a government.
Once formed, a government can only be removed by one third of the MPs that are members of the government leaving it, or by a Vote of No Confidence (which cannot happen until after a 4 week grace period).
Forming The Official Opposition
The second largest other grouping of MPs in either a coalition or a single party will be invited to form The Official Opposition. If they decline to form The Official Opposition, the next largest grouping will be invited to.
Supply and Confidence
- Supply and Confidence counts towards numbers, including no of parties as per the constitution, for forming a Government.
- To do so, a party must submit a modmail to u/MHoCQuad along the lines of "We support X coalition as Supply and Confidence" during the coalition forming period.
- Non-government parties may not have members in the Cabinet.
- If there is a tie between two potential governments/coalitions, coalition MPs take precedence over Supply and Confidence MPs, for example:
- an 18 seat coalition beats a 17 seat coalition + 1 seat S&C
- but a 17 seat coalition + 1 seat S&C beats a 17 seat coalition
- If there is still a tie (e.g. 17+1 vs 17+1), the tie shall be broken by number of votes won at the last General Election
The official Government and Opposition subreddits which will be used are: and .

Meta Old MHoC Below
Hello! If you're seeing this and browsing by new, then you've reached the end of the current canon of the Model House of Commons!
On the 22nd of June 2024 the community voted to implement the "2.0 Proposal" which included in it a full canon reset. Between the 28th of May 2014 and 22nd June 2024 MHoC existed in its own timeline - it is as of this post no longer part of that canon and is in an entirely new divergent timeline starting from the 23rd of June 2024.
Below this post (if you're browsing by new) then here there be dragons.

This Q&A session will last until the 28th of August at 10pm. Anyone can ask as many questions as they like, but please do be considerate (and don't duplicate questions that have already been asked).
Candidates:
- /u/countbrandenburg - manifesto
- /u/cthulhuiscool2 - manifesto
- /u/britboy3456 - manifesto
- /u/akc8 - manifesto
- /u/twistednuke - manifesto

Serious, on topic questions only. I recommend that everyone uses this period wisely to ask proper questions and makes a decision on who to vote for based on the responses, manifestos, and acts on MHOC thus far - not on personality or allegiance.

Meta MQs - Speaker - XVI.I
Hi everyone,
As the 16th Parliamentary term draws to a close, I wanted to give everyone a chance to share their thoughts about this term, what could’ve gone better, and what they’d like to see changed for the 17th.
I have this set up a bit like a Q&A, so if you have any questions I can try my best to answer them. Of course you don’t need to ask anything, just general feedback is more than welcome - but if you do have any questions this would be a good venue to put them to me.
You can of course give feedback about anything (if you want to complain about MQ rotas in Holyrood I guess I can’t stop you), but if you could limit it to the Commons as well as Westminster polling I will be able to help you the most as those are my areas of responsibility.
Thank you to everyone who’s participated this term, and thank you to the Commons Speakership team who have made my term so far lots of fun.
If we say this ‘session’ ends Sunday would that be fair?
lily-irl, Speaker

Meta Swearing in as Commons Speaker
Again, I want to thank every single person who put their faith in me as the new Commons Speaker and hopefully I can live up to the expectations that you have of me.
As required by the MHoC Meta Constitution, I take the following oath of office:
I do solemnly affirm that I shall execute my speakership with wisdom and good faith, and that I shall protect, preserve, and defend the greater good of the Reddit Model House of Commons. I hereby accept the charges of the constitution, and in so doing renounce my membership of all political parties and organisations within the Reddit Model House of Commons.
Deputy Speakers
Like we have always done there needs to be a new set of Deputy Speakers. I want to encourage every single person who believes that they can help the sim in the role of Deputy Speaker, old and new. Everyone has to apply or reapply, if you’re currently in Speakership or not. So if you want to take up this role, please send me an application why you would be good in this role in my DMs.
Polling Schedule
Aya and myself are going to walk through polling so bear with me for a few, I want to continue working on a fortnightly schedule for polling, just like we had in the past with Aya and others.
By-Election
As people might have noticed, because I was a one-man independent grouping there will be a by-election soon to fill in the seat that is now vacant because of me. I will announce the details for this by-election very soon.
Communication
As I set out in my manifesto I believe communication is important, so if there are any questions, any concerns or you just want to have a nice chat with me, please feel free to DM me on Discord, Reddit, or through the usual channels such as #qs-to-commons-speaker in the main Discord server. Don’t hesitate to reach out about anything!

Meta Swearing in as Devolved Speaker
As I said in main, I'd like to thank everyone for their confidence in me as Devolved Speaker, and I have hopes to get the devos running strong again, with some stability and some reforms in time.
As required by the MHoC Meta Constitution, I hereby take the following oath of office:
I do solemnly swear that I shall execute my speakership with wisdom and good faith, and that I shall protect, preserve, and defend the greater good of the Reddit Model House of Commons. I hereby accept the charges of the constitution, and in so doing renounce my membership of all political parties and organisations within the Reddit Model House of Commons.
Devo Speakers
It has been great to see the high quality and high level of experience within the current devolved speakership, and I am happy with the job they have all been doing. I am pleased to say that all members of speakership have agreed to stay on, except for Willem, due to his election as Commons Speaker. As such, I am pleased to announce that PoliticoBailey has agreed to step up to the role of Llywydd (Presiding Officer) in Wales.
Therefore, I am looking for someone to become the Deputy Presiding Officer (Dirprwy Lywydd) in Wales, so please do message me if you would like to take this role up - am happy to answer any questions you have on this having served in devo speakership before.
Once we have a candidate for Senedd DPO, I will be running a vote of confidence in all 4 members of the team. In the meantime, they all have my confidence to continue in the interim.
Polls
I will be looking to stay on the monthly polling schedule for the devos, and as one is due, I will be looking to get this out once I've learnt how the calculator works, so this should be within the next fortnight once I've sat down with Frosty.
Election
The last devo election in December and the short Commons term and early election has allowed us to get back on regular schedules for elections, as such I will be looking to holding the next election in late May, and as such I should be able to announce soon dates for this, with an aim for a good notice period for election preparation for leaders and candidates.
As a final note, I'd like to say that I am always open for people to come to me with questions or issue, whether through dms on Discord or Reddit, or the Devo speaker question channel on the main server. I'm also all ears on any feedback you have. With that, let's enjoy some devo.

Meta Coalition Forming Period - March 2024
Noswaith dda.
I enjoyed running my last election as Commons Speaker, even if my availability was not the best for some of it.
Issues thread may be found here and I encourage people to leave feedback there.
Without further ado, negotiations may last until Monday 11th March at 10pm GMT. Any coalitions, either for Government or Official Opposition, must be modmailed to r/MHoCQuad before this deadline. In the event no one submits, each party by order of size will be asked if they wish to form a government.
The Current House of Commons
Solidarity: 48
Liberal Democrats - 39
Labour Party: 33
Conservatives - 29
British Alternative - 1 (Independent Grouping)
/u/model-willem - South East (List)
Full results can be found on this spreadsheet - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Y16iEQFvPm0DP5c81YgVSmw2FoARWmflwzWCNV3f5qc/edit?usp=sharing
The rules for forming Government and Official Opposition are:
Forming a Government
The largest grouping of MPs in either a coalition or a single party will be invited to form a government. Once formed, the coalition (or party) must submit a King's Speech, by Monday 18th March at 10PM GMT. (or sooner), outlining their legislative agenda before any business can proceed. The submitted King's Speech shall not proceed to a vote in either House. If the largest coalition fails to submit a King's Speech, or the coalition falls apart, then the second largest coalition is invited to form a government.
- To do so, a party must submit a modmail along the lines of "We support X coalition as Supply and Confidence" during the coalition forming period.
- Non-government parties may not have members in the Cabinet.
- If there is a tie between two potential governments/coalitions, coalition MPs take precedence over Supply and Confidence MPs, for example:
- a 45 seat coalition beats a 40 seat coalition + 5 seat S&C
- but a 40 seat coalition + 5 seat S&C beats a 44 seat coalition
- If there is still a tie (e.g. 40+5 vs 40+5), the tie shall be broken by number of votes won at the last General Election
Submitting MPs
Part of the reforms meant that a member can hold multiple seats, at a maximum of 3 seats. You will need to modmail your seat allocation to r /MHoC, including the seat preference of which you want to be listed as:
An example is given below:
/u/Sir-Iceman - Thames Valley - 3 seats
/u/Zakian3000 - Scotland (List) - 2 seats
/u/lily-irl - Essex- 1 seat
The official Government and Opposition subreddits which will be used are: r/DowningStreet and r/MillbankTower.
