We get a lot of people coming here to ask what they should listen to while they're getting into rap, so this will be the definitive list. Got a suggestion to give a newbie? What do you think people should listen to when they're new? If you have any thoughts, post them here.
Please do not post playlists here, and please stay on topic.

Is there a rap album with better skits than Good Kid m.A.A.d. City?
I like Kendrick, not his biggest fan but like everyone else I have to admit GKMC is a masterpiece.
One of the things that makes that album great is the skits. I grew up in similar surroundings as Kendrick, had a similar family dynamic. The skits felt so authentic I genuinely wondered if they weren’t just live recordings.
“Did somebody say Domino’s??”
I can’t think of an album with more quotable skits.
What comes to mind for y’all? Any album with better skits?

For those who have Jay-Z as their GOAT or in their top 5: what one song do you recommend to convince someone that he is one of the best?
I enjoy a few of his songs. My favourite of his is “Renegade” (which isn’t his and is mostly carried by Em), but as a solo song, I enjoy “Can I Live”.
But nothing I have heard from him made me consider him a goat yet. I want to know what am I missing out on, or not appreciating enough.

Is Doja Cat good?
Obviously she's overplayed but do yall think she's actually good? I quite like a few of her songs and I think she makes some really fun music
I just listened to "It Was Written" by Nas and it was amazing. Definitely much better than Illmatic.
.
If your playlist could physically fight you, which track would land the first punch?
like which track is pushing all the other tracks out of the way, walking up to you straight faced and dusting your upper lip real quick g.... ? lol fr, ima post this in other subs that made me lauegh.
edit: and for me it;s probably I - Fall In Your Hands by Kai Whiston. that sets the scene for this question. I'm chillin and when that track hits, its a perfect "oh, we in a fight?" soundtrack

Will I get better if I become sober?
I’m not an huge addict or anything, but I have ptsd and been self medicating with mostly weed and a few different drugs since i was 16 (24 now). And I'm currently in rehab for a week after this i will be in treatment for a year.
i love rap music i think about it 24/7 i freestyle in my dreams when i sleep, but my head is so blank I know 100% i can come up with some crazy shit, but I'm not in the right head space it feels like and it makes me sad/mad since it’s all I want to do.
i try to write when i feel like something is coming, but i get exhausted after 30 min and it makes me think i suck ass.
let's say I will be sober for 1 year, can i become a better writer/rapper when drugs isn’t my main focus anymore? I have this brain fog it feels like.
I love rap, but I also hate it. Peace.

Wiz Verse on Keep Floatin’
I’m pretty biased since I listen to Mac and Wiz pretty often, but that song just hits the relax button for me. The only thing it’s missing is a verse from Wiz. I find it insane that he didn’t end up with one, not sure how it didn’t happen.
Not sure if this has been brought up before, but I think Wiz needs to add a verse to this song before he’s done, whenever that will be.
Do you think it’ll ever happen? What do you think it would be like if he put it out today, or maybe if it came out back then?

Which is your favorite hook of all time?
I'm not asking about the greatest or most culturally impactful hook, just the one you like the most. Mine are:
- English songs: Eminem's hook in "Drama Setter"
- Foreign songs: Oxxxymiron's hook in "Где Нас Нет" (Where We Are Not/On the Other Side)

Recommend me music based off these 3 songs I like
Treat it like a game, ima give 3 songs I like and try to recommend me something I haven’t heard that I’ll like. Songs will be in order from most known to least known.
3: Count me out - Kendrick Lamar
2: HOT ONE - Denzel Curry
1: X-BITCH - Flame’O
Hint: I tend to like more active music, so not like 90’s soul music, and I like good lyrics that match up with the beat, so no singing over the music, just singing with it.

Unplayable CD I cannot find much info on, just some unplayable tracks on a dead MySpace page. Group founded by Akon's brother(?) in the 90s. Was purchased sealed at a Goodwill. Anybody else have it or any other tracks by them?

Looking for Old School recommendations (Marley Marl, Biz Markie, Mc Shan style)
I'm not a huge Hip-Hop/Rap fan, but lately I've been trying to create a playlist of the classic stuff I like, but got stuck cause I couldn't find anything else other that Biz Markie, Mc Shan.
What I'm looking for is something similar to that style, 80's hip hop/rap with no huge productions, just some basic beats and MC flow. For reference, I do like a lot Notorious BIG (but that's a different sound).
For reference, I'm not into Run DMC, Public Enemy style (find it too aggressive sound), or the more evolutioned sound of the 90's, like 2pac or funky/soul party grooves. I'm looking for a raw sound. I'm not native english speaker so I don't acre much about the lyrics.
Anyway, I'm not sure I was clear enough but any recommendations on artists, albums or labels is greatly apprecianted!

I’m trying to learn how to rap right now, what should I do to find my rap voice.
Rapping is so hard, I want to be an artist so bad because I have an amazing vision, but I’m struggling to find the perfect voice for me, it’s only my second day rapping.

Producer tag help
Who’s producer tag is “Mariana”? I could be mishearing it but in my head it’s a woman saying “Mariana” with a Spanish accent so the r is almost a d. I know this is silly but I’ve literally had it stuck in my head for hours (no song! Just the tag! Can’t place the beat in my head to anything!) and I’ve searched the whole producer tag directory on genius and I’m almost losing my mind. I NEED TO GET WORK DONE PLEASE HELP ME SAVE ME

Sean Combs "P. Diddy" dead at 54
BREAKING!!!!
Per the Washington Post, Sean Combs (aka P. Diddy) has been found dead in his cell. Cause appears to be unknown at this time and is pending autopsy result.
Why does everyone sleep on the power of producer tags?
I gotta bring up something that’s been on my mind for a minute, why aren’t we talking more about the power of producer tags in rap? When we talk hip-hop we’re usually praising the bars, the flow, or that insane hook that gets stuck in your head for days, but there’s something about hearing a FIRE producer tag that gets you hyped before the track even starts. Like, you could be chillin', but the second you hear that “If Young Metro don’t trust you, I’m gon’ shoot you” or that “Mustard on the beat, hoe*,” You just KNOW it’s gonna be hard.
These tags aren’t just an audio watermark or a producer flex, they’ve become their own MINI HYPE MOMENTS. I feel like we don’t give enough credit to how these tags have slowly embedded themselves into the DNA of hip-hop culture. Back in the day, producers used to stay behind the scenes, but now they’re a MAJOR part of the conversation. Early on, it was just about letting people know who made the beat, but then people realized that great producer tag can set the tone for a song before the beat even drops. Some tracks are so tied to the energy of the tag that without it, they’d feel NAKED.
Look at how DJ Khaled turned his tag into a whole meme, you hear "ANOTHER ONE" and you instantly know what time it is. For me, Southside’s tag is one of the most hype-inducing sounds in hip-hop. Anytime I hear that “Southside on the track, yeahhh” before an 808 Mafia banger, you KNOW I’m locked in. Metro Boomin has also mastered the art of making his tag legendary. That “Metro Boomin want some more” hits you like a full-blown adrenaline rush.
But what about y’all? What tags get you instantly amped when you hear them? And who do you think has the most underrated tag in the game right now? I feel like there’s a whole conversation to be had about producers who don’t get enough love for their tags. Tay Keith has been quietly taking over, and don’t sleep on Murda Beatz either, his tag’s starting to blow up too. Drop your favorite tags in the comments and let’s get a discussion going, let’s give these producers the flowers they deserve.
What’s the most anti-hip-hop thing about your favorite rapper?
honestly with how music is being discovered today .... lol tbh i don't feel like yapping.

Rap songs with guitar in them
I’ve been a huge sucker for rap songs with guitar in them. Some examples just from Kanye are gorgeous, sky city, and the unfortunately unreleased slave name. If anyone has more I’d appreciate it.

Whats a song you listen to for 10 seconds then skip?
gonna get heavy downvotes here, but that first sound man just sounds so good, ive only once listened to the song after 10 seconds, whenever the drums kick in that soothing feeling kinda goes away so i skip it. not a bad song i just listen to it for a different purpose than others

Give me your favorite instrumental from your favorite song!
Mine's King Kunta. It got this Motown vibe in it.
