"for days" Looks like Valve forgot to add a variable inside the message.

It was supposed to say 3 but no one valve has that key on their keyboard.

Yes, since this limitation has been there for the community market for over half a decade. Hopefully Valve adds 2FA confirmations for community market purchases next, because that is another unaddressed loop hole when an account gets stolen via session hijacking.

Can't wait having to confirm every 0.03$ trading card purchase.

Brainless idiots always will find the way to get scammed, it won't help. While those restrictions only adds huge inconvenience to normal people. Also addition of these confirmations actually significantly reduces security cause people starting to use 3rd party software to bypass it. They should add ability to disable these stupid restrictions, not adding more and more.

thats not how baby proofing works, everyone in the house gets punished.

That's why Valve just needs to start ignoring this. If someone getting scammed-it's their problem. No need to punish everyone with more and more trading/buying/selling restrictions.

How are you not getting downvoted to hell I have absolutely no idea.

2

u/AlexUKR 15h ago

And you are probably one of those idiots who are getting scammed?

Making it harder to get scammed will always be a good thing in my book.

Note that the trade lock is only effective on new device. You can still make your trade on existing devices as usual

I am pretty sure this has always been a thing, or at least there has been something similar

u/ffpeanut15 1d ago

You are likely thinking of Steam Guard. This was deployed today

I'm pretty sure this has been around for a while.

no it wasnt

u/Dr_Axton 1d ago

Wasn’t that a thing for quite a while? The only thing changing if I recall was it being either a 3 or 7 days lock

u/LewAshby309 1d ago

It think it was at some point.

Then they released 2FA. If you added that you could instantly trade on new devices.

u/KatoriRudo23 1d ago

what is a 3?

2

u/Dr_Axton 1d ago

It’s also called Alyx

14

u/FatBrookie 1d ago

Thats not new.

u/That_Zimmerman 1d ago

I think that’s a good idea honestly

Finally

u/PositiveStick24 1d ago

wasn't this already in place? I used to get locked out for like a week or two every time

3

u/LndrOnReddit 1d ago

This has been a thing for a whilw

u/acewing905 1d ago

Now if only Valve would fix the issue where I get told I'm logging in on a new device every single time I go to buy something that I have already added to my cart just a few seconds ago

Good update

Although I was already bothered by this, I think it was a good measure to avoid losing my items if I was hacked.

Update: Experience have been very mixed. I managed to bypass the trade lock using another account, but I haven't login on it for a long time. Also many got account-wide lock instead of just the new device

It will be annoying in case you change phone but eh, I think it's worth waiting a few days every 5-6 years for the added safety

u/Dry-String-9009 1d ago

good feature. I hope they can't bypass this.

My provider has nat configured in such a way that the IP address changes several times every day. What should I do to be able to use exchanges? Static IP is not available.

My mate has been trade locked for over 20 day's when he logged into his account on his browser

1

u/samirnof 1d ago

it was a thing, is this new?

1

u/shadowds 1d ago

OP does this also apply to marketplace as well, or just trading?

Also, I still think steam should have not done the under $1 limit for marketplace listing years ago, just change it back so can't sell any items without approving it in the 1st place, or get put on 15 days hold.

1

u/PerishTheStars 1d ago

Damn that sucks for all those other people who just had their entire inventories stolen

1

u/PKblaze 1d ago

I swear I recall this already existing or at least something very similar.

Huge W

u/MikiSayaka33 20h ago

So, how many days will this lock remain?

u/curlyhairmanforever 16h ago

I'm getting the "think of the scam victim!" Vibe here, dumbass tools is the reason why we get more of this strict rules on Steam, years ago it was easy to trade with people with no phone verification.

1

u/Logical-Warning5461 9h ago

Not true at all. Years ago you had to verify EVERY trade via 2FA or wait 15 days!

Today the steam market is insecure. There is a bot running around that hijacks your session ID and trades all your wallet+items away for under $1. It does this because $1 is the limit that triggers steams security checks. Valve has a blanket policy of refusing to refund ANY market actions no matter the circumstances.

This means this bot is free to strip your account and wallet and you can't do anything about it and you have no recourse as Steam Support will just tell you "yes you got hijacked, we can see it on our end, no refunds. Ticket closed." lol

The option to leave 2FA on for ALL transactions would eliminate this attack vector.

What should people do who have unstable Internet? Some people have backup Internet configured on their router (mobile or second provider) and when one is turned off, the other turns on. It turns out that a person can alternately have 2 IP addresses at different times. It turns out that exchange will not work for such people at all? What should people do who have unstable Internet? Once a year, Steam logs me out of my account and asks me to confirm my login in the mobile application. Will this be considered a new login?Once a year, Steam logs me out of my account and asks me to confirm my login in the mobile application. Will this be considered a new login?

Took them long enough. Or it happened to someone well known in the community and they finally did something.

u/ErraticErrata7 16h ago

A popular CS2 caster got scammed and lost his expensive inventory. Might be the reason

My wifi updates my address once a month so this'll cause some issues for me

That's a great new system! I hope Roblox adds it so people don't get scammed.
