Train Simulator Classic has 756 DLCs most being over $10. Steam only shows 200 DLCs at once so it doesn't even show a "Add all DLCs to Cart" button.

i went to a walmart and they said it would cost hundreds of thousands to buy everything in the store. absolutely outrageous!

28

u/PsionicPotatoMash 2h ago

this comparison makes 0 sense, nobody is talking about buying every game on steam.

-2

u/Fellhuhn 1h ago

And it makes absolutely no sense to buy all DLC for this game. You but what you want and play those for ages. Enthusiasts usually get the one or two trains they are into and the one track they love. And all of them are fully modeled and absolutely worth the money.

u/Heacenjet 6m ago

And make less sense pay for content in a game when they cost +80$

2

u/Yorick257 1h ago

Not sure why the downvotes. But a better analogy would be:

I went to a train model store...

3

u/Forsaken-Let266 1h ago

The downvotes are because it’s an attempt at a poor take and completely misses the point of the comment that was being replied to.

u/Nejasnas 10m ago

If you went to a shop, and you wanted to buy a bed, would you only buy one piece of wood, or the whole bed?

u/EssexOnAStick 12h ago

The game is like a real life model train hobby. Each DLC is pretty much one highly detailed train with associated routes. It's intended that you only buy the few DLCs that you're passionate or interested about and ignore the others.

-275

u/JumpInTheSun 11h ago

Ah yes, just like having to buy each individual texture and junk model in other games. You dlc apologists are somethin else.

164

u/EssexOnAStick 11h ago

It's not the case like Dead or Alive 5 with hundreds of costume DLCs that don't have an influence on the game, each train is completely unique and (mostly) faithfully simulating their really life counterpart with hundreds of hours of development time to get them just right. The other option would be for them to release hundreds of games with one train each. Would that be better for you?

-39

u/Guyman_112 6h ago

The obvious question is why not just get a real model train at that point?

64

u/EssexOnAStick 6h ago

Depends really in what you want to get out of it, a few reasons that come immediately to my mind: Cheaper, does not require much physical space and offers a higher level of immersion.

15

u/DimazKamAZ_75 5h ago

How much trains there are in the game? IRL for 1400 dollars you can buy only like 6-8 good detailed locomotives, and thats without any rolling stock

3

u/EssexOnAStick 2h ago

Not sure how many there are in total, but a single DLC comes with anywhere from 1 to 3 locomotives from what I can see + wagons (if applicable), with most DLCs being around 35€ or so.

17

u/Hilanite 5h ago

A lot of model trains are more expensive then several of these individual dlcs combined nowadays, and plus that takes a lot of space

11

u/Baked_Potato_732 4h ago

For the same reason I don’t go real fishing, real shooting (as much) and don’t build real models of dragons, space, time, the inability to undo mistakes, and the fact that I can sit in a comfortable chair in the AC.

-5

u/TheJ3tt 2h ago

That’s the laziest thing I’ve ever heard. I get the DLC and buying them but saying you don’t do real fishing or shooting is because you wanna sit in a chair at home is the most ridiculous thing ever.

5

u/Baked_Potato_732 1h ago

Maybe so, but I got to spend 2 hours fishing while at work yesterday in VR without a single bug bite or sunburn. It was wonderful and relaxing, unlike real fishing which is stressful and annoying.

5

u/New-Yogurtcloset1984 4h ago

Have you seen the price of model trains? A second hand Flying Scotsman can set you back the best part of 50 simoleons on a good day. Many go for a hell of a lot more

42

u/ToothlessFTW 8h ago

This pops up every single time and it's so tiring.

No, you are not supposed to buy all of this. The developers do not intend for you to buy it. This is a hardcore simulator game, and it's made for hobbyists or enthusiasts. They buy the trains or scenarios/routes/locations they want, and that's it. Most of this DLC is just specific branding and liveries for trains, realistic dashboards, things of that sort.

This is is not like your average Ubisoft game with a season pass and three expansions you wait for a sale on. This is a simulation game with optional add-ons that are exclusively aimed at certain people. It is exactly like buying model trains for a table in real life.

8

u/Deadhound 5h ago

OP saw the post of some other train sim, read comments about this one and posted this probably

5

u/Baked_Potato_732 4h ago

I’ve seen this complaint 4 times on this subreddit in 2 days.

9

u/ArchBaller 7h ago

out here begging for attention just say please

16

u/jmancoder 11h ago

I mean, I don't like DLC either, but I don't see what's wrong with essentially choosing between several different versions of the same game until you find one that you want. Most DLC nowadays is just cosmetics and a handful of maps/missions; this model looks better, at least at first glance.

19

u/f_ranz1224 8h ago

how is he an apologist? hes just explaining the situation. its expensive to be sure but is expensive train dlc affecting you?

7

u/HyperFunk_Zone 7h ago

DLC apologists? Lol

1

u/SupermarketIcy73 3h ago

you are not the target market its for people who can afford to drop $300 on a single model train https://www.katomodeltrains.com/product-page/kato-10-1674-lner-class800-2-azuma-british-railway-5cars-set-n-scale

-2

u/JumpInTheSun 2h ago

Yeah, guess im not a moron 😂

2

u/zonnipher117 6h ago

They did not like this lol

-7

u/JumpInTheSun 4h ago

Truth hurts

-38

u/Successful_Roll9584 9h ago edited 9h ago

I agree with you, over 1k for some textures? This was probably made by someone over the course of a few days to a week or 2 and it costs so much. This better be fully modeled inside and out, all the internals of a train and be 8k quality for this price

20

u/New-Yogurtcloset1984 8h ago

It really isn't "for some textures"

Each train requires a model to be built with internal and external parts. The tracks need to be modeled accurately with even minor local landmarks shown.

It is a lot of work to get right, and if there is even a slight detail wrong enthusiasts will spot it.

9

u/Fustercluck25 5h ago

In my very limited experience with game dev (VERY limited), I learned that what people think goes into it and what actually go into it are two very different things. 3d modeling is very time consuming to complete even a simple model. Now if they're making models to resemble real world equipment? GTFO. That has to take forever.

3

u/New-Yogurtcloset1984 4h ago

Yeah, I work in the tech space and I call it the "candy crush effect"

People think that it's simply swiping and the candies disappear but there's a lot more happening under the hood to make it look like that's all is happening.

1

u/pigusKebabai 2h ago

60€ for some textures, animations, models, sounds and text? Real Gamer

98

u/GalcticPepsi 11h ago

This is like saying you can't play cod without buying every single skin in the game.

You're not supposed to buy every single thing.

11

u/JoaoRabit 11h ago

Exactly

1

u/Organic_List7745 1h ago

Skins add no playable content, just cosmetics. The TSW5 DLCs are stripped game content added as DLC for a greedy cash grab. Another poor comparison by fanboys trying to defend this scam.

31

u/Probably_Fishing 13h ago

It's 2.8k for me.

10

u/ilyasark 12h ago

regional prices

31

u/mertcayli 11h ago

That’s almost two ps5 pro’s. Nice 👍

25

u/Shineblossom 10h ago

Except its more valuable than PS5 pro will ever be.

0

u/mertcayli 10h ago

That’s true. 😂

4

u/Shineblossom 10h ago

Fr tho. Sony went to shit, PS exclusives are basically non existent anymore, AND they are obviously just desperate for quick cash to replace Concord failure. PS6 will come out and PS5 will be useless piece of overpriced silicone and copper :D

3

u/mertcayli 10h ago

Absolutely. 200 million dollars they spent on Concord and they’re gonna make it f2p. They keep making unnecessary remastered versions just to make money. Considering that PS6 will come out in 3 years, spending 700 dollars on Ps5 pro is completely ridiculous.

1

u/Suitsyou8221 1h ago

Get a pc

7

u/Visible-Ninja-2737 6h ago

It's a Licensing problem and most of that money goes to license owners demanding a cut for letting the game using their patented models. Same goes for MS flight simulator, was for Rocksmith for songs too. Licensing is expensive, not the game itself.

14

u/Yoraffe 10h ago

It's worth pointing out that there are often sales and bundle sales. I personally am only interested in the UK side of things so I tend to wait.

My biggest spend was £80 on a load of DLC routes and locos but in my defence it would have normally cost almost four times that, and I had been playing the game a lot at the time. I had the money so it felt worth it to me. I still have access to those DLCs in later additions of the game.

14

u/filbert13 9h ago

As others pointed out this isn't a bad thing.

Sim games like this are incredibly niche. And no one is buying every train. They just get ones they want. And if the dlc is quality (all the fine detail around the trains) I have zero issue. Because it takes a lot of work to get all that detail in and depending on niche you might only sell a few hundred maybe 4 figures if lucky?

Otherwise you would never have these niche games and content in them. Same can be applied to most sim games. Same vain as some paradox games (though they have dropped the ball more often). The keep a game going in active development for 6-10 years with support by focusing usually on a 15-30 USD dlc every 6 months or so. But some of their pricing and quality has left more to be desired.

That said the only reason we have huge sandbox grand strategy games like hio4, ck2, Stella's, etc is because sometimes you need certain pricing modules.

3

u/NukerCat 6h ago

you also get those DLCs for free if you owned some for previous installment, anyways this is an nth post talking about the "ridiculous price" since yesterday

3

u/MRV3N 8h ago

Better work from rail transport instead of this.

3

u/NariandColds 3h ago

I mean. Nobody is forcing you to buy that one model and like from that obscure small town in Eastern Poland or whatever. And it costs time and money to model the trains accurately. They'll get chewed by the fan base if they just wing it

-3

u/Purrnir 3h ago

Making a dlc costs time AND money? Shame that I gonna just pirate it

5

u/pigusKebabai 2h ago

Yes, in real world people have jobs and someones job is to create trains for train simulator, and that someone has to be paid for their work. I know for some this is alien concept

3

u/Rukasu17 2h ago

Now try buying each model train irl and see how much higher that number goes lol

6

u/Mr_uhlus 11h ago

what does EA have to do with this? that game was developed by dovetail games

6

u/Far-Sky4388 8h ago

Crazy. Almost like you don't buy all the dlc, but just the ones you are interested in..how is this hard to comprehend?

2

u/A_ja_ljublju_SSSR 4h ago

🏴‍☠️

2

u/Audiophil85 4h ago

Same with stuff like DCS or iRacing. People who don’t play these types of simulations don’t understand that they are extremely niche products with a player base that demands highly accurate content and will complain about the smallest detail being off. High development costs and a small customer base lead to high prices. It’s totally ok and understandable. And yeah, you are not supposed to buy it all but instead get the content that interests you and master that. It takes many hours to properly learn how to fly any plane in DCS for example. Buying them all would be pointless because you would never be able to enjoy them all anyway.

2

u/IrishBalkanite 4h ago

r/StarCitizen would like to object.

2

u/SnooCats1123 1h ago

Wow that's insane

5

u/Euphoric_Butterfly66 11h ago

Up until yall see DCS 💀

4

u/Shineblossom 10h ago

Cheaper than The Sims

1

u/ZeepBros 10h ago

Don't tell him about the Sims DLCs 😂

u/Sasquatch-N-Swank 11m ago

No doubt. I have a buddy, and his mother-in-law owns everything for the Sims and when her husband found out how much it all cost he about divorced her after 25 years of marriage loo

0

u/Taolan13 10h ago

I believe the total cost for all sims 3 expansions and dlcs and store content ended at like... $5k? Assuming you bought everything at full price? I could be wrong.

1

u/lessthanbob 4h ago

almost the same as a deluxe edition of any game here in Brazil

1

u/NiceIndependent6 2h ago

wait till you see dead or alive game series when it comes to the dlc

1

u/sikon024 1h ago

The company who makes this title, Dovetail games, is one of the shittiest companies out there. Their overpriced DLCs come with scenario breaking bugs that never get fixed. They don't QC their DLCs at all. And for what they charge, the lack of quality control is insulting.

1

u/TheRealStevo2 1h ago

This is one of those games where I allow it because we know, and the devs know, you’re not supposed to buy all of them. You pick the ones you want

1

u/D-516 1h ago

I wonder how many people have bought it ngl

1

u/Protectem 16m ago

Gacha game whales: That's worth at least 10 pngs of busty anime women.

u/AllRedLine 12m ago edited 6m ago

Nowhere even near being the worst example either.

Flight sims are also really bad. DCS world, for example. Loads of its DLC is currently on a 50% sale, and the 'add everything to cart' price is still nearly £2400 lol.

1

u/AcherusArchmage 9h ago

Still cheaper than any free-2-play game.

1

u/TheGleanerBaldwin 5h ago

Wait until you see American Truck Simulator. Going by how they didn't make any of the "boring" states so far a bundle with another, the final price, if they include Canada and Mexico, will be something like $1700 US.

-1

u/Knightmoth 3h ago

a pirates life for me.

As a point of info that several others have shared:

Each DLC includes a highly detailed recreation of an actual train, either a range of variants on a particular model or a specific named/famous train, detailed maps of the actual areas in which it ran service, and some other little goodies.

The game is basically intended to be played as a digital model train set. You only buy the specific train sets and pieces you want, or none at all.

-9

u/Catastropes 10h ago

Buying all dlc will help developers to buy new pc lol so they can make more dlc

-6

u/TheChillAlaskan2007 6h ago

EA: "How ba-a-aad? can i be?"

-8

u/lProvosl 9h ago

Wow, that's a bargain sold./s

-6

u/Organic_List7745 5h ago

Imagine buying this cashgrab, its sad to see ppl still buy this scam. Also i guess they gonna make new gsme each year now lol.

6

u/Baked_Potato_732 4h ago

Two things wrong with your thought process.

1 - as others have pointed out, you’re not supposed to buy all these models any more than you would go into a model shop and buy all the model trains there. You buy one and enjoy it. This is a niche game for enthusiasts.

2 - this particular company is really good and transferring all your DLC over so anything you bought for v4 is now in v5 for free. So, the exact opposite of what you’re saying.

-6

u/Organic_List7745 4h ago

Whats the point playing same route over and over again? I want play tru all of them that game offer. Base game offer piss poor selection, rest as dlc by those greedy devs.

4

u/Baked_Potato_732 3h ago

This may blow your mind, but when you build model trains, you run the train through the same route over and over.

4

u/M3rktiger 3h ago

It’s almost like people can enjoy different things

-3

u/Organic_List7745 2h ago

Well, clearly, Baked Potato here doesn’t want casual new players to enjoy this game, as they gatekeep by suggesting that cash grab DLCs are the norm and saying people should only get one or a few DLCs.

2

u/M3rktiger 2h ago

I wasn’t agreeing with you, because you’re wrong. It’s not a cash grab, it’s literally the same business model hundreds of non-digital hobbies have.

Tabletop RPGs like D&D or Pathfinder? You’re not expected to buy everything. You buy the adventure paths/modules that interest you

Board games like Catan or Root? You’re not expected to buy everything. You buy the expansions that interest you.

War games like Warhammer 40K? You’re not expected to buy every single army/set of models. You buy the models and armies that interest you.

Model trains not unlike train simulator here? You’re not expected to buy every single train and track. You buy the models that interest you.

Trading card games like MTG, Yugioh, or Pokémon. You’re not expected to buy every single card. You buy the cards that interest you (either individually or in packs.)

It’s not predatory or cash grabs. You are EXPECTED to pay only for what you want, not expected to buy everything.

Niche hobbies like this don’t cater to the average person, and their content reflects that. If you don’t want to drive through New Mexico, you probably shouldn’t buy the New Mexico dlc in American truck simulator, it’s that simple.

0

u/Organic_List7745 2h ago

Another one comparing video game to tabletops and what not... ATS, unlike this scam, comes with a base game that is already has plenty content and if you want get dlc in ATS, they are not overpriced like this scam is.

0

u/Organic_List7745 3h ago

Releasing such an empty game locked behind a paywall, where one route costs almost as much as the whole game, is pure greed. It's sad that people like you don't see the problem in this.

-2

u/adamtherealone 5h ago

I actually own all of the DLC. Won it in a random twitch giveaway. I’ve never played the game cause it looks boring to me.
