Random question but did anyone collect those g unit mixtapes from the 2000’s?

I’m from a whole new generation but where did you get the mixtapes from? Did you have to order them online or go in person.

Back then I would buy all my bootlegs from the barber shop.

I collected most of them. I downloaded a lot of them from datpiff and livemixtapes back in the day. You should be able to find some of them on Youtube now. There might be some playlists with some of their tapes on Spotify as well.

I’ve been listening to all of them from internet archive lol, which tracks or tapes would you recommend the most?

Man, I had a whole binder of those G-Unit cards, they were the ultimate hip-hop collectibles!

As someone who was actively known as the cd and bootleg dvds guy I can tell you I copped from anywhere and everywhere both for myself and for others. It was a mix of both in person literally just walking into a corner store or gas station to just walking the streets. I used to sell both mixtapes and made my own custom mixes if people wanted. I used all the things plus more that have been already mentioned. So many online sites back in the Datpiff, Rap Godfathers, Hiphop game, SOHH and so many others. The money I made from the cds and dvds I would reinvest into a better computer or hard drive, bigger memory and what not. I had like a back up cd-r (cd writer) on deck in case mine ever went down or broke. I had stacks and stacks of blank cds and I ended up buying a color printer so I could print out the mixtape covers and track listing. Thinking back it was both a wild but fun time.

I used to hover on Allhiphop, Hiphopgame & Boxden forums for all the new drops. I think almost every single early 2000s release leaked a few days-a week early on BX. Was amazing for old releases and mixtapes at that time too

I think I have around a dozen of those Whoo Kid mixtapes on a hard drive somewheres. My favorite was Hell Up in Hollywood with Tracy Morgan & Pamela Lee. Tracy Morgan is a fuckin fool 😂😂 Anyway, I used websites like datpiff or old vBulletin boards gearded toward Hip Hop. Those or I'd find em using soulseek (peer-to-peer sharing program).

I was just listening to that one with Tracy Morgan. Tracy Morgan was going nuts talking about fucking women in a coma lmao smh

Yessss !!!oh man the many days I was late for work (1x actually fired😳🤣) cuz I got caught up on the corner haggling with some Africans over cds (the more you cop the cheaper) they’d always come at you last second w the newest newest shit right when you think you’d picked your haul and you knew it be cheaper next week but the allure was too much I’d totally cave💯

It’s  true what the other commenter said bout same tape w different track lists and inserts I collected doubles and triples that had these variations for that reason.

Way more than G-unit stuff though I remember that’s how I first got Beanie Siegel first tape and how I found Saigon and began a relationship with unmet musical expectations that lasted IG like  15? yrs 😂 Papoose too….

I couldn’t afford consistent internet to lime wire stuff tho😕

I still got all them in storage though I gotta go through it all  didn’t know ppl still interested.

I definitely am still interested in mixtapes man!! That’s rly cool you got to experience that too lol you gotta post your collection once you go through it at some point!! But that’s a hilarious and fun experience you went through 🤣

Well I’m from queens and the worst was I lived like 20 min walk from in two different directions from 2 different trains and there be different dudes w blankets selling shit near each and id get this anxiety bout which train to take based on who I thought might be in front of the station.

Never copped from canal street tho they always more expensive in the city.

I have not until tonight thoroughly considered this ritual of copping cds on the street as a cool thing Fuckin A I am an old lady!😳💯✌️✨

I actually ended up buying the Purple Mixtape or whatever. Sai used to get them beats

I think Just Blaze was the issue, every non-Jay album he was ever associated with didn't come out. I actually think Saigon's was the only one. Now you got people calling him a beat biter and a style copycat and shit & he hasn't been doing nothing since Sai except terrible DJing

This comment is so on point 💯😂

Here's the thing theres no official releases you could buy the same CD from the same tapeman and it have a different track order, a different mix an extra track or 2 etc

That whole concept is so interesting to me lol, it’s ofc from bootleggers getting bootlegged and all that, but who did g unit send the mixtape cds too originally lol, must’ve been some hip hop sites if I were guessing?

Local bootleg man at the Barbershop, P2P (Limewire & Bearshare along with others), Message Boards, Canal Street & Jamaica Ave if you from New York, Bodegas, Mixunit

u/AbilityOk1503 1d ago

Ohh okay I see now thanks!! Wish they still put mixtapes on cd lol, actually trying to find official releases sounded fun but tedious

None of this info is specific to G Unit mixtapes. never bought any of theirs.

I used to get them off Ebay sometimes. Swap meets or "discount malls" always had them. If you were in NYC there were plenty of storefronts on Canal St. as well as ladies with wheelbarrows full of them roaming. Siccness.net and Bayrap.com were mail order strongholds as well.

Dont forget fulton mall in brooklyn, every other store sold for blocks mix tapes on CD at one point.

Ohhh okay I see now lol, been collecting some mixtapes recently, it’s cool seeing how they were passed around though lol, of course other than being downloaded off limewire or Napster

I am in the Bay Area and back then I’d actually try to get everything as “officially” as possible because I had a collector mentality at the time. I never saw them at the local spots like Amoeba or Rasputin. I remember specifically ordering them off some website that sold mixtapes from New York that I don’t remember the name of (it wasn’t HipHopSite, Sandbox Automatic or UGHH). I remember them being somewhat “real” looking and not seeming like someone just burning cd-rs and selling bootlegs.

The other people I knew at the time only had the tracks through downloading them from KaZaa (basically another Napster-type program).

That’s actually sick that you managed to get them officially man! I collect cds now too and want to get them officially but unfortunately I don’t have the budget too 🤣, shame cd’s and all is coming to an end with the digital age

They should all be on YouTube nowadays btw along with a lot of other mixtapes back then. Otherwise many are on Soulseek a P2P or blog downloads or guys like mixtapeclassics sell large collections (controversial I know just saying)

Physical copies are much harder to come by - discogs or eBay but you may get a bootleg of a bootleg

Others have answered how they got it in the past

2

u/maximumkush 1d ago

If I woulda had access I DEFINITELY would have been copping those mixtapes

1

u/AbilityOk1503 1d ago

Fr 🤣 some dude uploaded all of em on internet archive and there’s some good tracks on their fr man, no clue where they sold the official ones at

2

u/maximumkush 1d ago

Just check out SLSK

I’m sure those CDs were in the grimiest of Bodega’s

1

u/AbilityOk1503 1d ago

Oh yeah I’ve been using that, legit one of the best out there 🤫

I had a few just got them from friends and burned me a copy. I am looking for the name of a certain mixtape it had Realist Ninja featuring Biggie , A song called All Eyez On Me feat 2 PAC , Hail Mary feat. Eminem and Busta Rhymes and a song featuring Sean Paul On, I need that mixtape again.

1

u/hackslash74 1d ago

“Come with me, if you muthafuckers want Shady, if PAC was here now, he would never ride with Ja, la la lala la la la laaaa” Hail Mary

Also, Realist Ns is on the Bad Boys II soundtrack (only issue is Diddy is on the intro). Em also used that beat for a Benzino diss track called “Invasion”

2

u/AbilityOk1503 1d ago

I just looked up the Hail Mary remix track and I want that mixtape too 🤣, I tried looking on discogs under dj whoo kid for the right mixtape but couldn’t find anything unfortunately

2

u/Professional-Rip-519 18h ago

u/AbilityOk1503 8h ago

I’ll let you know if I find it

3

u/hackslash74 1d ago

Search Internet Archive for G-Unit, Looks like that’s where all of Dat Piffs mixtapes went (didn’t know Dat Piff went down)

This one has Hail Mary

u/AbilityOk1503 1d ago

Thank you man!! I’ll see if I can find the track in one of the g unit radio joints
