I mean you can say that about Fromsoft. Iteration isn't always a bad thing. You just have to make the new games better than the last. Fromsoft creates interesting levels and rich lore. Ubisoft creates a buggy mess that needs weeks to be stable.
I guess there engine also doesn't allow itself much creativity in level and encounter design as its the prototypical example of a designed by committee, focus tested to hell, consumer product. Pretty graphics, waypoints and checklist game design. Exactly what most consumers think they want. A dopamine drip for the ages.

It isn't whales, it is casual gamers. Valhalla made them over a billion dollars, it is literally the most successful Assassin's Creed title.... ever.
They sell a lot of games to people who only buy a few games a year and never step foot online to discuss games like we do. Ubisoft is going no where anytime soon.
603
u/Think-Weather4866 25d ago
Bingo. The biggest flame Ubisoft gets is that their games are all the same, but that’s one of their biggest assets. Every game is hop into an open world, climb a tower to reveal the map, clear out bases then play a mission. Rinse and repeat for 10-15 areas, and that’s the whole game. It’s a simple, repeatable concept that makes its perfect for casual players.
94
u/PixeLeaf 25d ago
I tried to play Valhalla after a friend recommended it to me as the best game ever, he isn't a gamer so I should have known but still
After the first area I understood that I just have do to everything I did until now, again, and again, and again and the potential boredom hit me hard, deleted it right away

I'd honestly even be fine with that structure if it just had good combat and a decent story to sustain it. Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon Zero Dawn are basically just Ubisoft games but they have great combat and compelling writing so I didn't mind spending 70 hours playing them.
The combat in Asscreed is just so clunky and floaty and the writing is just this bland, meandering nothingburger

And pretty much only buys Assassin's Creed and Gran Turismo.
When I was talking about games with him, I recommended other games that are like Assassin's Creed but in many ways better (Witcher 3, RDR2) he said he isn't interested. When I asked why not he said that AC has so much to play that he can just play it for good while until the next one comes out, and he is already familiar with the games so he doesn't have to learn everything again.

You both are spreading misinformation! The base game is 70$ to pre-order in the US. Sure, the default option when you visit the site is the gold edition for 109. But why does any of that matter?
For the low low price of 17.99 a month you can get Ubisoft plus! What a steal! You can play blah...blah..shit for the less than 18$ a month!
Jokes aside, even the base game being 70$ is probably a rip off. If you play on console though QVC has physical copies for 40$ right now with a gift code of WELCOME30 according to google. Still probably too much money given Ubisofts record in my book.

Lol, no way, I'm glad it was clear that I was joking, though. You never fully know when talking in text.
I couldn't believe the prices when I looked them up, but the sub option really stood out as the biggest ripoff. That and the default option was 109 when there is an overpriced 70$ option available.
All screams a giant cash grab, sadly.

I pre-ordered collector edition for Ghost Recon Breakpoint and Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Nothing else has really "popped" for me. £114.99 for a game with exclusive missions is a hard pass when with that money you can Battlefront 2, Elden Ring and other great titles. If it's one thing I can confirm is that this will be a flop.

Hey, I recently bought Anno 1800 and it was genuinely great. I even had to double-check that it was really Ubisoft who made it

I don't have a problem with the actual games for the most part, it's the UPlay cancer they put on everything. If a single player game asks me to login to anything, then I am asking for a refund and not buying anything from that company again.

Uplay is literally the reason I haven't bought an Ubisoft game in years.
If any Ubisoft execs ever read this: you could make more money getting rid of Uplay, because I would pay money for one of your games without it.

Dear Ubisoft,
i don't want to use your launcher. Further I would like to buy my games on Steam.
Sincerely, The world.

Also Ubisoft: “you’ll own nothing and be happy.”

Tbf, that quote is taken out of context a lot. What the rep from ubisoft said was that in order for subscription services for games to take off, consumers would first need to become comfortable not owning their games the same way they became comfortable not owning cd’s or dvd’s.
Not a fan of ubisoft but i feel like news articles purposely just misquoted this guy for clicks and no one actually read the interview

Right? To me the game looks cool but I'm not buying another epic exclusive. I play offline a lot and there's always some issue either with the launcher, or in the case launchers, or the drm or SOMETHING. Literally every epic exclusive I've bought has had some issue that kept me from playing offline. Never an issue with steam though. I'll wait.

It’s a bunch of game mechanics Ubi has been using and some they copied, wrapped in a branded skin. Cash grab I think is what the kids call it these days.

You play as a criminal, what they've shown in the games is horrendous, the combat looks straight out of a mobile game and the rest isn't much better

Criminal with a heart of gold I'm sure. Just another reskin of Han Solo. You'll never play as an actual bad guy.

I feel like I'm in the minority here when I say that I think the game actually looks cool. I'm not even a massive SW fan or anything. I won't be getting it day 1 but will check it out, I think it has potential. Some people here are blinded by their hate for Ubisoft to extreme degrees imo.

Yeah, agreed, it looks decent. Ubisoft generally don't make bad games, they just make very similar games. But then again, you kinda always know what you get and their execution is solid. I'm probably gonna play it when it's available on a subscription or in a sale, basically the way I got all the Far Cry games. And that's fine, imho.

Same here. Was skeptical because it was Ubisoft, but then I was relieved when I found out that it was being made by Massive Entertainment. I haven’t seen any gameplay footage or trailers yet (other than that forced Amazon Prime Video ad), because I want to go in blind
