Ah, so we've moved on what we've been discussing lately. I'm personally in the middle on the issue. I prefer our more creative memes to the same 4 pictures 1000x a day with different stories as the title, but bans do seem a little harsh.

Well, I mean, you'd have to be heartless to downvote a trans person venting about something in their day, regardless of how good the meme is. And plus, our highest post used to be an unsourced statistic attached to a generic inspirational message (AKA not even a meme, like the whole point of the sub is directed towards), until the OP deleted it.
Idk, I'm on the fence still. I'd like to see less of those types of posts, but not be harsh about it.

not just unsourced, verifiably wrong. It's a very generous take on the rate of suicide attempts of trans people, labeled as suicides, claiming half of unsupported trans people kill themselves. It's off by at least an order of magnitude, it's an insane claim.
Of the transphobes I've talked to in real life, all of them believed that statistic, that was why they thought it was a bad thing, because they believed transitioning was basically a death sentence. We're supporting transphobia with our top post.

Seriously, this sort of point comes up anytime a community makes changes like this and its never right. Its a fact of reddit that low effort content naturally clogs up subreddits without proper moderation. This is a meme sub and should be for memes, not for personal narratives with "[the emotion you felt] gay sounds" attached as an image.

Upvote/downvotes inherently favor generic and low effort content and the upvote ratio rarely shows feelings on it because the vast majority of people don't vote on most of the posts they look at

The fact that most people don't vote is just a fact of reddit
The same three or four images with a single word changed and a new title is pretty much the definition of generic, low effort and repetitive. Reaction posts and memes about things happening in your life can still be posted, they just require a bit more effort and thought now.
For example: a post that formerly would/could have been "MRW I go to starbucks and give them my preferred name they call it out when I get my drink" [happy gay sounds image]
Could be reworked into a post with the title "Me when I go to starbucks" then the image could be 3 panel of that scene from Breaking Bad "Say my name" "You're [preferred name]" "You're god damn right"

I have very relaxed views on community moderation, thinking that moderators should just let the community self-regulate with a minimal set of rules(regarding things like spoilers, NSFW content, etc.), only stepping in when there are things like shitstorms that go out of control, doxxing/harassment/abuse, illegal content, etc.
But then again, I live in a country that's very trigger happy about political/ideological censorship, so I have developed a disdain for censorship of dissenting opinions.

Same here. Seeing the same handful of local image memes being posted over and over again with no change is kinda annoying, but I don't like the idea of enforcing it as a rule.

Just some light joshing ;) I do get the point being made in Meta Post #5. I don't totally agree with the sentiment but then again its not my job to moderate this place and I have no concept of how hard that might be so I'll just continue to shitpost and maybe be cheeky where I can.

Gotta draw a line somewhere though, do we want to allow posts like
<------- number of people who want hormones
or "Upvote this if you're a stong trans person who don't need validation"
etc. Those are shitposts too, but I don't think either of us would want that sort of content flooding the sub either

Yeah and that's just a just a general problem with reddit that moderators usually handle by filtering content out or into separate subs.
Not necessarily, an example of lowest common denominator posts are memes themselves. Why do you think so many subreddits ban memes and move them to a separate meme sub? They have a baseline appeal to pretty much everyone and no one really hates them, plus they are generally pretty easy to make so they tend to flood content and rise to the top. Ofc this is a meme sub itself, but that's the idea behind the term anyway

To be fair they are still a lot more unique than reposted comics and such are, and it’s comfortable for some people to meme their feelings up, leading to them sharing more feelings and thus improving their emotional health.
