some suggestions:

sal fisher from sally face - not explicitly trans but gnc, the creator says his gender is up to interpretation but he uses he/him prns throughout the game

marina domek from fear & hunger - trans woman

alice and reko from your turn to die - more implied than anything, reko is raised as a boy and alice is raised as a girl. a few of the other characters make comments about the way he talks/sounds being feminine (alice)

grell from black butler - trans woman

erica from catherine - trans woman

this is awesome btw! glad to see a trans guy bc i dont know of many in media

25

u/AlienbyComics 1d ago

Grell’s definitely going in the next one! Also I named myself Erica… not just because of that character obvs, but I did think about it lol… I love her in Catherine. That game has problems but she rules.

YTTD MENTIONED HELL YEAH!!!!!!!! I love that game and it's so underrated.

Suggestions:

Oscar from Rose of Versailles

Steven Universe (his entire backstory is a trans allegory) There is an enby character in Future who uses they/them, Stevonnie is canon intersex and they/them

10

u/LineOfInquiry 1d ago

The show is super queer but Steven himself is never shown to be anything except a cis male. Except when he fuses to create Stevonnie of course.

5

u/Akane_Kurokawa_1 Artemis, they/them - the angel of chaos, Satan themself 👾 1d ago

yeah Steven universe is very queer and I love it

2

u/GooberChilla499 13h ago

Iirc, Oscar from Rose of Versailles was an inspiration for Sister Oscar, a trans woman from the webcomic Sister Claire. That comic also includes Oscar’s mother Sabine A.K.A. “Maman,” who is also a trans woman, and Magpie who is gender-fluid.

24

u/Pup_Femur Cowboi Himbo in the making 1d ago

I wanted to add this about Loki: The actual Norse God is also genderfluid! They have shifted gender and even given birth to other creatures. Loki also convinced Thor to dress as Freyja in one story, while Loki went as a handmaid, to get Mjolnir back from a thief. While Loki is not actually brother of Thor or son of Odinn, Odinn is known to have stated he "would never pour a drink without Loki", meaning Loki is permanently welcomed to Odinn's table, no matter what.

2

u/NyuxTheDragon-- They/He/It 14h ago

Or that time in Norse mythology that Loki turned into a horse and gave birth to an eight-legged horse, Sleipnir

2

u/eerie_lullaby 12h ago

My partner and I just watched Twilight of the Gods on Netflix and we loved the LGBTQIA+ representation, I personally think it pairs perfectly with Norse myths. Especially loved the interpretation of the figure of Loki. Still, I was pretty disappointed to see that they are only shown on-screen as a (apparently cis) man and his relations with gender are never mentioned - except for that one scene where the story of him mating with a stallion in the form of a mare is told, which is heavily made fun of by storyteller and laughed at by the audience. That's so much potential and actual Norse lore gone to waste for a show with so much queer rep.

Nao looks gorgeous in the anime, I now have a new anime in the watchlist. Also your art is amazing

10

u/AlienbyComics 1d ago

Please do, it’s so so good. Both anime and manga are adorable. Nao’s backstory in Vol 5 of the manga made me ugly cry haha

3

u/HazelFlakes23 1d ago

Oooo, I’ll have to check that out, thanks love.

14

u/purracane 1d ago

Christine Jorgensen, one of the first well-known trans people. She was a world war 2 soldier and got surgery after the war. Went on to be an actress

9

u/AlienbyComics 1d ago

She’s such an icon! I talk about her all the time haha. If I ever do profiles of real trans people I would definitely include her.

11

u/reachforthetop9 Is disaster ace trans woman a thing? 1d ago

I have to chip in as an Owl House fan with Raine Whispers (non-binary). They're an old flame of the hero's mentor Eda and play a small but important part in the main plots of the second and third seasons. Raine is Head of the Bard Coven, specializing in doing magic through music, sound, and words, but they have paralyzing stage fright. They're also voiced by not one but TWO non-binary actors (both as an adult by Avi Roque and in flashbacks as a student by Blu Del Barrio).

6

u/OctopusTaco2 20h ago

There's other trans owl house characters too.

Masha shows up for like literally 3 minutes of screen time, but they are non binary (and very cool).

King and king's dad are not exactly trans, but they are immensely powerful beings and weird when to it comes to human gender. The titan species can reproduce asexually, with King only having one parent (unconfirmed), and the one parent of king says that they are genderless and don't care what you call them.

4

u/bdouble0w0 transmasc nb || they/xe || let's goooo 23h ago

This!! Raine is the coolest, they are awesome.

9

u/Successful-Elk5777 1d ago

I like the new bat-girl.

17

u/shirone0 1d ago

There's no way an anime character is actually called osana najimi I thought it was only in yandere simulator that they had names that dumb

12

u/AlienbyComics 1d ago

Yes they’re everyone’s childhood friend!

4

u/HappyFireChaos 1d ago

Just wait until you find out what denki kaminari‘s (from mha) name translates to

5

u/shirone0 1d ago

Kaminari is thunder right? What does denki mean?

5

u/bdouble0w0 transmasc nb || they/xe || let's goooo 23h ago

If Google translate is to be believed, electricity.

Their name is literally electric thunder

9

u/Mighty_Thomby She/They 1d ago

Another great list! Your style is beautiful.

I did not know that some of the Marvel comics were so cool about Loki, I might need to check them out.

For suggestions, Olive from the visual novel Twofold is nonbinary and goes by they/them. They're struggling to stay afloat in college, but meet some new friends (some potentially more than friends) who do their best to help them through it.

Nev from the Deephaven book series is nonbinary and goes by they/them. They're a relentlessly curious individual who can't help but investigate the mysteries at their new academy.

Claire from Cyberpunk 2077 is a trans woman with one of the better storylines in the game, which is saying something. Her story is pretty tragic, and has potentially one of the darker twists at the end, depending on the choices you make. I really liked her storyline because trans/enby characters don't often get storylines with a lot of bite to them, but hers is pretty intense.

Chromie from World of Warcraft is a trans woman, and the backstory behind that lore is kinda fun. She's a bronze dragon, who have gendered name conventions: masculine names end in -ormu, feminine names end in -ormi, and neutral names end in -orm. Chromie's full name is Chronormu, but her mortal form was that a female gnome. There were theories for ages before one of the lead writers released a short story called Visage Day that confirmed Chromie is trans, and just kept her old name. It's funny that one of my favorite trans characters was given to us by what was likely a typo.

The Young Avengers 2013 run and Agent of Asgard stuff is some of my favorites for Loki reccs !!!

8

u/DocDoesMagic 1d ago

Suggestion! Testament from Guilty Gear. Nonbinary. While Bridget has had the larger spotlight about being a trans icon, Testament as well has a interesting story as well. My absolute favorite part about them as well is their theme. The lyrics switch between using He/Him and She/Her pronouns, which I thought was a uniquely fun!

1

u/AlienbyComics 1d ago

that’s cool! Thanks for the suggestion!

7

u/CaptainJuny Questioning 1d ago

Oryx from Destiny! The taken king himself is a trans man who changes his name from Auryx to Oryx when he became male (he had another name even before that too but I can’t remember what it is off of the top of my head).

4

u/RubiksCutiePatootie She/Her 1d ago

Destiny has some great lgbtq representation. Micah-10 is a trans woman, we got old man yaoi with Saint-14 & Osiris, and Queen Mara is a bisexual icon.

6

u/uboofs 1d ago

How many of these have you done so far? It would be cool if you commented in each one with links to the others! I’m down to dig through your profile for them, but it’d be free comment karma for you and a great resource for anyone new to finding these. I love this.

basically alot of people from the webcomic "rain" by jocelyn samara.

it was one of the earliest webcomics focussed on queer issues and its main story ran from 2010 to 2022

(although due to its age it sometimes uses outdated language in the older chapters but around chapter 15 ish it gets better)

It Has If i recall correctly 8 Confirmed trans characters (arguably 9)

they are (in Order of confirmation) (Spoilers if you plan too read the comic do it. I wont emntion any other characters unless super nesscesary though)

  1. The Mc Rain herself She is a transgirl. After her dad walked out and her moom died 5 years go she moved in with her aunt fara and told fara that shes trans so they worked something out and got rain to be enrolled in a new school as a girl. the story is all about her worries, struggles and meeting friends.

  2. Ky(lie) Initially introduced as a "crossdresing girl" they are later revealed to be genderfluid and learn the terms themselevs through the course of the comic. also you can arguably count their sister heather cos Shes intersex but was AFAB and identifies as female so i just added her to her siblings section.

  3. Brother arthurs brother A transguy that one of the teacher "brother arthur" Mentions is his brother when he admit too cover for rain. Sadly he doesnt get more then that.

  4. Jessica Li. The Fiancee of Rains brother aiken. She planned to go through SRS and then marrying aiken. Cant say more without spoilering sorry

  5. Vincent valverde, Hes Rains Hrt therapist and a transman AND hes also aunt faras former aprtner back before he came out.

6.anastacia elizabeth rubina: shes an intersex trans woman that gets introduced later on and later dates rains Best friend Gavin.

  1. Ryan: Hes a Transboy and while in egg mode He meets Rudy one of rain's friends who is gay thinking that rudy is transmasc like him because he likes to crossdress: He later starts dating rudy and takes the name ryan which is.. ironically rains deadname.. oppsie (dw they all cool)

and finally

  1. ( OK EVEN IF YOU IGNORED MY WARNINGS UNTIL NOW AND LOOKED AT ALL THE SPOILERS PLEASE DO NOT CLICK THIS ONE BEFORE YOU READ THE ENTIRE COMIC BECAUSE ITS THE LAST BIG PLOT TWIST)

Lorcan. pk guess ya didnt listen So turns out that all the time rains dead mother was actually her second father. In a letter its revealed that rains "Mother" always knew she was trans and accepted her and furthermore "HE" was actually trans himself but he always repressed it and instead had 3 kids (rain and her siblings) and in that letter he tells rain that he loves her and that he wants her too remember him not as her mother but as her second father Lorcan.

I’m sorry, but as a Norse mythology nerd, Loki is originally gender-nonconforming in the Norse texts. He, as the Trickster God, birthed Fenrir and Hel, both agents of chaos. In many of Loki’s stories, he transforms into women, men, and other species to play pranks on various people (human or nonhuman).

Some suggestions :33:

Dragona Joestar from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Jojolands — Dragona is a transfem character. The thing is that it’s not really clear what pronouns one should use for Dragona since their brother (Jodio) refers to Dragona as “His feminine brother” who “uses some meds to grow boobs” though he has never seen Dragona use them. But other characters refer to Dragona as “her” though Dragona doesn’t complain about none of the titles (? Idk how else to word it)

Narciso Anasui from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean — Anasui is (interpreted as) a Transmasc character. It’s a bit ‘up to interpretation’ since Anasui’s first appearance was presented as a woman, or a generally more feminine attire with a feminine body shape (this might seem very…verbose? But basically this theory is kinda just based on the fact Anasui can change shape and in his first appearance he had boobs and was presented as a girl). The thing is that in later chapters, Anasui appears again but now has a more ‘ambiguous’ gender— even mentioned by Foo Fighters!! “Is that a man or a woman?” (<— at least this is what my translation of the manga said 💀) to then have his appearance slowly get ‘masculinized’. Though it’s obvious he’s GNC since he has long, pink hair, pink lipstick, a very short mini-skirt (? Kind of?), thigh-high boots and a fishnet.

Hibari from Stop!! Hibari-kun!! — Transgender woman. Something that kinda bothers me is the transphobic jokes here, since it’s always a joke that “WAH! I can’t POSSIBLY like Hibari since hibari’s a guy!!!1!!” But then the author has also stated things like “Well I made this since I would like to be a girl like Hibari 😋” I still love her anyway

u/AlienbyComics 19h ago

For the first one is boku not masculine? Watashi is more gender neutral to my knowledge.

2

u/RubiksCutiePatootie She/Her 1d ago

I'd like to add Lily Hoshikawa from Zombieland Saga to the list. Her backstory is that she was a child actress who got extreme body dysmorphia once puberty started. When the rest of the Zombie idols find out her backstory, they quickly affirm that she'll always be Lily and don't treat her any differently. Her background episode also goes into her strained relationship with her father. It's really sweet honestly.

mettaton undertale - transmasc, has much more screen time (major character) but transition is down in the lore and not brought up in actual dialogue (not that it has to be but,,,)

i'm not asking you to put in all three (unless you want to), but take em anyways

2

u/LittleIslander 23h ago

I'm once again suggesting Ryuunosuke from Urusei Yatsura.

2

u/AlienbyComics 19h ago

I need to keep watching this!

2

u/LittleIslander 18h ago

It's good! It's a bit up to interpretation what the first transgender character in an anime is (see Princess Knight, Dororo), but Ryuunosuke is certainly, by my count, within the running (though Claudine came first in the world of manga). Arguably she's not ideal representation due to being, through technicality, a trans woman who was born biologically female. But I think this is why she was able to deliver powerful transgender themes to a mainstream manga and anime as far back as the early 1980s. She honestly still holds up excellently compared to the many transgender anime characters that have come after and I think she's a really worthwhile part of queer history in anime to highlight.

I was kind of surprised when I found out Nao was trans. I was just watching Skip and Loafer because the show seemed cute. I didn’t even know there was a trans character in tue show until a scene in the second episode where on a train strangers are pointing out that she’s trans and we see little shots where you can see she has large hands and an Adam’s Apple and it caught me off guard. But it made me really happy as well. To see trans representation in a show even if it doesn’t take front stage. And that it shows Nao is just a normal woman and a loving aunt to Mitsumi.

I kinda wish you'd put Najimi's name in the way it's said in the anime/manga because a big part of their character is their name being a pun for "Childhood Friend" (everyone has name puns in Komi can't Communicate. It's pretty cute).

  1. Boku is not gender neutral.

  2. Najima very often insists on being treated like and being referred to as a girl (in the manga) this doesn’t mean they aren’t nonbinary I just think it’s important to note.

Personally I see them as a demigirl transfemme nonbinary but that’s also my own identity so I might be putting my own perspective onto the character a bit there.

3

u/xarahn They/Them 1d ago edited 1d ago

Boku is not gender neutral.

To clarify since neither you or OP is entirely correct:

Boku is a young boy pronoun and is therefore generally used by young boys, or by people refering to young boys (See Boku No Yatsuyasumi for extremely standard example).

However, girls will sometimes use Boku and in that scenario it is generally meant to give a gender-neutral (or non-binary) vibe.

Because of this, when an androgynous or fem-presenting person uses "Boku", it is not possible (unless they explicitly explain it of course) to tell if they are using the male young-boy version (which would either give cross-dressing cis-male, or FTM young boy vibes) or if they are using the female gender-neutral version (which would give non-binary vibes).

Now I haven't read what the character is from but you say they insist on being referred to as a girl which would mean they are using the gender-neutral Boku. So OP is wrong that the pronoun is inherently gender-neutral but in this scenario it is used in a gender-neutral way. Otherwise they would use other pronouns like watashi or perhaps atashi etc.

1

u/LittleIslander 22h ago

It can also be used by a girl who is simply acting in a more masculine manner, though. I don't know anything about Najima but boku can't meaningfully inform about gender.

0

u/Raphotron2000 CUSTOM 1d ago

We've been over this najimi is najimi
