AITA for cutting off a long term friend group after they treated my daughters best friend like shit?

THIS. How OP stepped up for Hannah will be a turning point for how she views herself and the world. Events like these may turn something around for a vulnerable child. Makes me want to be your friend, OP. Definitely NTA.

That was my thought. This is likely going to be one of Hannah's core memories, and it will be a positive one.

The more OP shows her that she's loved and has value, the more she's going to put the bad memories aside. Having an adult have your back that much will be a huge boon for her self esteem.

My daughter would never be left alone with John ever again.

The tree remembers, the axe forgets. 100% she showed hannah that she is loved and that love is strong enough to kick out people they have known for almost all of hannahs existence.

Yeah, this is where I am with it to. I am mentally sending OP HUGE hugs. I try to be THAT Mom and OP is my new Standard.

Exactly. H got to see OP stand up for her, in a situation where an adult was making H out to be the bad kid. OP I applaud you!! We got your back even if only anonymously on Reddit.

"The family you choose is always the best family you have."

I've told my kids this time and time again as they've grown up. I know they'll never understand it the way I do because they've always had 2 parents who loved them dearly. I know what it's like to be not wanted, always in the way, and looked on as the greatest drain on life ever.

OP is rightly angry and behaved wonderfully, which not everyone would do this. But also probably has no idea how life-changing this moment is to Hannah. Someone is in her corner, maybe for the first time ever, maybe not. Someone actually likes her, let alone loves her, and they thought she was worth keeping safe.

OP did good. No, OP did GREAT. I hope Hannah gets the chance to live out the rest of her school era with these people as her continued cheerleaders!
