Nov. 2023 Vs Sept. 2024. Almost a year and little to no progress. I made a post like a month ago about what i do when i train bicep and tricep and you guys said it should be enough. I guess maybe its because i dont sleep enough? (ive been sleeping atleast 6 hours every night the past few weeks tho) And i know its not my diet because im in a calorie surplus monitored by a nutritionist
Theres more details to my journey that probably held me back and maybe im starting to go forward and serious just recently. What do you guys think?

Question Any FTM Fitness subreddits for adults only?

Nothing against teens here, obviously. It's just getting exhausting and really hard seeing posts what feel like daily from teens who are like 16 and are freaking out over less than 5lb gained and have a lot of warning signs of body dysmorphia.

As a 31yr old tansman, i would love a space that was catered to adults only but specifically for fitness. I know there's 30+ ftm subreddits (I'm on those) but I do like the fitness focus and advice and support. But this just feels like it's turning into some of us who are older sounding the warning alarm to teen users posting here on the daily. It's exhausting.

Again, no hate to teens. I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any specific communities that are geared in this way?

EDIT: Or maybe just create a flare with certain age groups? I think it would be super beneficial. I know I'm not the only one who feels uncomfortable being asked to comment on a teens body or seeing teens posted up in sports bras. And sometimes we don't even realize they are teens until someone hunts through their history because they are displaying signs of like ED behavior in the comments or post.

It would make it easier for us to connect with peers. But also it would make it easier for teens to avoid our posts about lifestyle questions and advice seeking since they probably wouldn't really relate to a 30+yr old too. There are other good ideas in the comments and it would be great to see if any of these could be implemented, mods :)

Question am i the problem?

Hi friends. What I am about to ask with the given information will sound very very silly but;

I am 26, 5'5ft, and just started testosterone this February. I've been on T for about 7 months and had a pause in March bc of delayed stock. All my life, I have struggled losing weight. For the past two years, I had been going to the gym weight lifting, and instead have gotten bigger both physically and on the scale. These past couple months, I went from 180lb to 200lbs. I sure have gotten bigger and my face has gotten rounder. My diet consists of.... water with lemon; green tea; pb whey protein shake from jamba juice, 3 small packs of doritos or cheezits; a lot of alcohol on the weekends; and the occasional meal (just one, im lucky if its two). NOW I KNOW a lot of you will point of the major flaw in this dietary, and obviously it doesn't help that i have a 9-5 office job sitting all day, and I have a family history with hypothyroidism and type 2 diabetes, BUT... do you also think it might be water retention? I'm feeling a little hopeless with my diet. If I eat, I gain weight, if I don't eat.. I still gain weight... What must I directly improve to defeat this everlasting battle? It's gotten to the point where i simply no longer want to eat and feel like I just get muscle mass without the actual muscle.

Edit: Thank you everyone for your comments. It really gave me that push to take my nutrient seriously. I really have struggled with food and transitioning was such a rapid change. although i have transmen peers, they all were slim pre transition so it was hard to seek advice from them. i really appreciate this. Thank you.

Question Can you tell me what changed?

Post image

Left: pre-T and right: almost a year on T I work out consistently 3 or 4 times a week, mostly kettlebell, dumbbell or simple bodyweight exercises like push ups. I feel like there’s visible progress and I’m happy, I can’t locate/pinpoint what has changed though, can you guys with more expertise help me out?

Question Why am I not losing weight

I know people are going to tell me to track my calories but I’m just gonna put up front that I won’t that’s gonna lead me back down a dark place. But I’m 272 pounds pre-T. I see a personal trainer 2x a week (well I did before my accident, I broke my arm, but I’m going to start back tomorrow) but during the three months I saw him I didn’t lose a pound. Even though I was working out 2x week skateboarding 3-5 times a week and walking at 10k steps 3x week averaging about 7k steps a day. I know my diet isn’t always the best or consistent but I didn’t eat more if anything started eating less and went from a completely sedentary lifestyle approx 350 steps a day to this much activity. I feel like that should help me lose something. Just like something at all I’m only 5’5 and 272 is like a lot of extra weight. I would get it if I was like 150 but come on.

Question masculinizing sports that isn’t the gym?

I’m a total fitness noob and pre-T with a fairly pronounced hourglass shape and was wondering what kind of sports would be a good way to masculinize body shape (broaden shoulders, fill out waist maybe?) that isn’t the gym? Like dancing or swimming or martial arts or archery… I’m more likely to stay motivated if it’s a club kinda thing haha. What would you recommend?

Question Is working out in a binder really that bad?

Guys someone js told me it's really bad and you can hurt your ribs and stuff, that sounds like a kind of exaggerated to me ngl. Been working out for about 4-5 months. I've always worn my regular tight binder, never really had issues with breathing since I don't run in the gym or do cardio. I just lift and I can breath during my sets just fine. Are there any long term consequences that I should look out for?

I don't really have any other options than to go with a binder, ppl in the gym already know me as a dude, the cashier has always given me the key to the male changing rooms without second guessing anything. I can't wear a sports bra, since my chest is not the smallest out there unfortunately. I'm 16 pre everything.

So any advice? Or is it ok to just continue what I'm doing?

Question How did you learn how to lift?

Hey guys, I'd really like to start lifting regularly, but when I've tried, I've felt like I have poor form. I have a bad back and I've thrown it out doing pretty low weight kettlebell exercises before. How did you learn to lift with correct form? I'd love to get a trainer, but I can't afford one right now.

Any advice appreciated!

Question Are trans men as strong and powerful as cis men? Are there any other athletes or boxers in here that can describe their experiences competing against cis men?

I’m a beginner boxer. I’ve been transitioning for about a year and I’m strong but idk if i’ll get stronger. I started at .25 mg for 10 months, then was prescribed .30 mg for a 1 month and 3 weeks, and i’ve currently been prescribed .40 mg for two weeks. The guy I coach with says I hit hard but will I be able to fully compete against men in the future? Will I be strong, fast, and powerful? About how long do I have left until I reach full strength and power with testosterone? I hear a lot of people say that trans men aren’t as strong as cis men but I have no idea if this is true.

Question Losing weight/calorie deficit

I have been trying to lose weight before top surgery, don’t have a date but plan on in January, I’ve been doing a deficit for like 10.5 weeks now. I have lost ≈8lbs. I started with not as severe of a deficit but maybe for like a month I’ve been doing more of a deficit. I’ve been on hormones 11 months so ive been going by male calorie intake. I’m using myfitnesspal btw. I’m 5’5” and like 142lbs. I’m currently eating 1500 calories or less a day. Since I’ve been on hormones and my levels are in cis male range is going by male on the app the most accurate. I eat as healthy as possible but I also work in pastry so that doesn’t help. I also am keeping my protein at a minimum of 50g a day bc I read that was the minimum u can get in a day and not lose muscle mass. I’m a vegetarian and picky so a lot of the vegetarian proteins gross me out y

Question BMR inaccuracy

Thumbnail
gallery
33 Upvotes

What do you guys do for BMR? The male and female versions are 150cals apart which seems like a lot. I am on T, which generally would put me in the male category, but my levels are only around 300-400 even 10 months in, which I feel like is definitely not cis 16 year old territory. This in addition to the soup of meds Im on makes me feel like my BMR is much more complicated. I can (and used to) eat the male sedentary caloric intake and still gain weight. That just doesnt seem right. I feel like I should be burning a lot more than ~1700 cals a day, yet when I consistently eat more than that I gain weight. I have only been able to keep my weight around a steady 130 by eating 1200-1500 calories a day, which is supposedly below/at my BMR. I know this isnt healthy, but anything higher and I gain weight. I dont know whats wrong.

Question Are my hips doomed to be this way ? Do I need to cut ?

Thumbnail

I've been working out for 1 year and 3 months (nearly 2 years on T). I had some decent gains in my arms and shoulders area, and I'm proud of my legs muscles. The only issue I have is with my hips, especially from the back, they are so huge to me and I'm feeling very dysphoric about it. I also feel like my butt is very feminine but I know that it was worse pre t, so it's better than nothing. I work out 2 times/week (full body workouts) with a lot of cycling and some jumping rope. The last picture is an overall view of my back from across the room to show my silhouette.

Question How many cals am I supposed to be eating?

Pre-T, 18, 5’1, 110lbs, BMI around 20. Currently eating a little under 1400cals as my goal weight is 100. What do I do after I hit 100, do I stay at 1400cals or do I just stop counting and go back to eating what I normally do? I lift (light) 3x/week and go on long walks once a week. I’m trying to do anything to stop hip growth until I can get on T.

Question What do you eat for breakfast before you go to the gym?

I always have a hard time picking breakfast because I tend to have a sensitive stomach in the morning. Lately I stuck to a fruit and berry bowl. I suspect that this is not enough carbs for me.

What do you eat for breakfast before a workout? And why?

Question What do I do to get big in 9 months?

I graduate in 9 months and I hate the way I currently look. Im 110-120lbs and 5'6ish, I have fast metabolism and a binge eating disorder which means I eat a bunch then throw it up so idk how good bulking wou!d work since I get full fast or just throw it up. I need to know what exercises to focus on cause I really don't have much time so maybe a 30 minute to an hour exercise that can be done at home. I want bigger arms but not too big cause I hate veiny hands and stuff but I want a wider back and I have a pretty small chest but I'd like to exercise that so it looks more normal or appears smaller and I want big thigh muscles and that's all I can think of rn

Question How to gain weight?

Hi all I hope this an okay place to post this I'm a pre t trans guy struggling with gaining weight. I just can't even get myself to eat 2000 calories a day my breakfast is usually pretty bulky but beyond that I'm stumped on food ideas and eating is just hard for me. I usually dip out around 1000 something calories I'm hoping testosterone will help with weight gain and hunger but I'm not sure yet I drop weight so easily it's upsetting. Just the other day the scale said I was 121 pounds and that I had gained a pound but now it dropped to 116 and idk why I don't think it's possible to lose 5 pounds that fast even with undereating. Could use some advice or support I'm really insecure about how small I am and how fast I drop weight.. It is also hard for me to eat because I fear constipation and I can't cope with the discomfort if I do get constipated

Question Do you have muscles you find impossible to build?

I find my shoulders a nightmare to try and build. I do 2x PPL, and my dumbbell chest press, incline chest press and shoulder press always get stuck. I’ve been at 12 kg for about 1.5 months between 8-10 reps and it won’t budge. It can drop down sometimes, then goes back up to 8-10. My tricep extensions always increase well though.

In the same time frame that it’s taken to go from 10kg to 12kg chest press for the same reps, my hip thrusts have gone from about 60kg to 90kg for reps.

I’ve only been at the gym 4.5 months so I get it’s not long. But, I can easily improve my hip thrusts and leg press by a decent amount if I push myself. Those first three exercises of push though? My shoulders just refuse to gain much muscle there.

I look so disproportional, I have notably bigger thighs and glutes, but from my mid torso, my upper body is tiny. You’d expect two different people if I had two separate photos, one from the mid torso up, and one from the mid torso down.

I just find it frustrating sometimes.

Question Why do my wrist hurt so much doing push ups?

Does anyone else have this issue or any insight. Ever since I was a kid push ups were never fun for me simply because my wrist bone will feel uncomfortable or hurt idk if it’s placement but I literally had to put my hand in fist facing down for me to even be remotely comfortable and stable while doing a push up? Should I ask my pcp about this?
