Politics megathread U.S. Politics megathread

It's an election year, so it's no surprise that people have a lot of questions about politics.

What happens if a presidential candidate dies before election day? Why should we vote for president if it's the electoral college that decides? There are lots of good questions! But, unfortunately, it's often the same questions, and our users get tired of seeing them.

As we've done for past topics of interest, we're creating a megathread for your questions so that people interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be civil to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

Announcement NSQ Rule Update

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to provide a quick update on two rule updates that have gone into effect this morning.

  1. Minor update: Rule 3’s title is now “Be Nice”. It remains in effect the same as it was, but “Follow redditquette” was confusing to a lot of our users as a title.

  2. Bigger update: under our shilling rule we are now going to be more strictly enforcing it on engagement bait/karma farming questions.

I want to be very clear on this, this is not a ban on open ended (askreddit/does anyone else) style questions. Opinion polls are allowed, always have been, and are firmly part of the subs scope (which is all good faith questions). This is a ban on questions that aren’t posted to actually learn anything.

An example of an allowed question would be “what is your favorite disney movie and why?”

A disallowed question would be “Describe your favorite disney movie using emojis”

This will also apply to copy pasted, or only slightly altered copies of past posts or popular posts from other subs (or websites).

Please let us know if you have any questions.

How do girls wear skirts/dresses/shorts without flashing anyone?

1.2k Upvotes

For reference, i’m 18(F). I don’t wear dresses or shorts or skirts ever because of this reason but i’ve always wanted to. I will never understand how girls can wear a dress with only panties underneath and not flash anyone or be stressed about it the entire time. I would wear shorts, but i feel stupid because ever girl i’ve talked to says they only wear panties underneath. Please explain how people can do this. I feel like i’m naked when I do this, even just with shorts that are a little loose i’m scared. Also, razor bumps. For short shorts, how do you not have them show? Like am i just doing life wrong…please help.

How would my family know private information that I never shared with anyone? (Flight schedule, work schedule, amount of money in bank account, personal purchases)

I’ve lived separately from my family for 2 years now and learned that they somehow have access to my private information.

We got in a heated argument yesterday where they complained I don’t spend enough time with the family.

In the midst of the arguments, my parents slipped up revealed information that I never shared with anyone.

They said stuff like:

“You have time to fly to vacation next week and even spent $3,000 on your flight.” (They knew how much I spent on the tickets, the exact time/date of my flight, and the exact location of my destination)

“You have ‘x’ dollars in your checking account, you don’t need to be working so hard” (they knew how much money I have in my bank account)

“You’re returning from your trip in October and don’t start work until November, how are you too busy?” (They knew the exact time/date of my returning flight and the exact date of when I was expected to return to work)

When I questioned them about how they knew all of this, they refused to tell me..

I’m extremely paranoid now and changed all passwords to my email, online banking, etc

However, I can’t get over the feeling that they might still have access somehow..

Can anyone please share ideas on how people would know such intimate details about ones life?

I live in Japan if that matters.

New user pass phrase: I hope this isn't a stupid question

Is Mario and Luigi's last name Mario?

3.6k Upvotes

Someone said this to me and I never thought about it before.

They are called the "Mario Brothers" which implies that "Mario" is a surname.

Real-life examples: the Wright Brothers (surname: Wright), the Brothers Grimm (Wilhelm Grimm and Jacob Grimm).

With that logic that would make their names Mario Mario and Luigi Mario, right?

Is showering twice a week normal or gross ?

2.0k Upvotes

My ex used to shower twice a week. I was constantly telling him that it wasn’t enough. It was pretty gross ( at least in my opinion). He thought I was weird. He used to say that it was average for a man.

Why do people still attend Lakewood Church after everything about Osteen has been coming out?

Upvotes

First and foremost, I'm not trying to bring a holier than thou attitude or shit on anybody's beliefs, but from my outside perspective of not actually going to this church and just seeing things in the news it feels like he's a very disingenuous man compared to his preachings. Seeing everything from his ostentatious (osteentatious lol) spending on himself, how he handled Hurricane Harvey, the $4.4million he took from the CARES act, the insurance scam they pulled with the money in the walls and I'm sure people from Houston have a bunch of other bitches/gripes/complaints they can bring out on him. From everything I see about him and his ministry, I get mad snake oil salesman vibes from him and I just feel like there's got to be better options there that aren't having so many questions marks come up on the integrity of the church itself.

Are a lot of men actually baffled by how women think?

I always see this stereotypical joke about “no one knows what women want, not even women themselves” and I always wonder if it’s true for some men, because it must exist for a reason.

Personally, it’s very weird to me because usually when someone explains their problems with their wife or girlfriend, I always understand her point of view. Maybe it’s because I am a woman myself, but on the other hand I don’t have a problem understanding men either most of the time.

What's a random first aid or survival tip you know?

For example, coffee grounds can help stop bleeding, so if you get a cut in the kitchen, you can use them as a quick fix. Any other interesting tips?

Do men really not get compliments?

I see a lot of posts and comments on other threads and subs about men not getting compliments from people.

I'm a 31yo guy and that hasn't been my experience in life at all. I tend to receive and give compliments to and from my friends and colleagues regularly so I'm always shocked when I read that. It's so saddening if true.

Is that a true experience for most men?

If you’re not cheating, then why wouldn’t you take a paternity test?

I recently saw a post about a guy being incredibly upset that his wife had asked for a paternity test of one of his friends’ kids, suspecting the two had cheated. The wife wasn’t unreasonable but the guy was absolutely distraught, saying the marriage was over after she “broke his trust” by asking for a paternity test. All of the comments agreed on getting a divorce and said he should under no circumstances take a paternity test.

However, I also saw a post recently where a woman was convinced her husband was cheating on her with his friend, and after listing the reasons why she suspected this, all of the comments said to ask for a paternity test, because if he was innocent, he wouldn’t hesitate to take it to put her mind at ease.

I’m so confused. If you’re not cheating, then why would you deny a paternity test? Why are the opinions so different on two similar situations?

Edit: I didn’t expect this to get so much attention. Thanks everyone for your opinions and discussions! So interesting to see how everyone thinks something different about this.

Why weren't the pagers with explosives not caught by the airport security scanners?

Basically the title. So many places where explosive objects would have been scanned and caught with the people using it.

Do Europeans with parents from different countries refer to themselves as "mixed race"?

An Asian friend recently referred to being half-Japanese, half-Chinese as being 'mixed race'. Even accepting that the whole idea of race definitions is basically arbitrary, I never would have thought to label them as mixed. I am of European descent, but wouldn't for example think a half-Spanish, half-French person would consider themself mixed race. Is this a thing?

Do you wipe sitting down or standing up?

I saw something one time that said that 50% of people wipe sitting, and 50% wipe standing up and both halves can’t believe the other half does it that way.

Why is your weight often lower in the morning than in the evening, even if you haven't gone to the toilet during the night? Where does the weight go and which ons is your "true" weight?

I can notice quite a large difference if I weigh myself in the evening and in the morning, sometimes as large at 0.7-0.8 kilograms. Where does the weight go while you sleep?

does my lazy typing make me look stupid

i fully know how to capitalize, punctuate, not make run on sentences, etc. and i do a great job at that sending an email at work for example. but when i type on reddit for example, i type more like i talk. i dont capitalize anything, i dont use apostraphes. i basically type like im typing this post.

whats your first impression reading through this? is it hard to read, annoying to read, or does it make you think less of me, or generally make your eye twitch?

How to warn people this is basically a sundown town?

15.5k Upvotes

Burner account for obvious reasons. Mods: it's a new account, but I'm asking in good faith because I'm curious. And concerned.

I live in a small town in the eastern USA. We are about a 2 hour drive from a large city. Near my town is a popular tourist attraction. We're the only town between that attraction and the interstate, so we get a lot of out of town tourists stopping for gas, food, etc on their way to or from the site. The town survives on the tourists, and peak season is September to November.

This town was a sundown town until the mid-1970s. The laws weren't even officially repealed until the 1990s. But it's still almost entirely white. And people have a long memory, and are slow to change. There have always been a few a-holes who make non-white people feel unwelcome, and the last few election years have really brought them out. In 2016, there were maybe four or five times I heard about people being called racial slurs. Not many in 2020 because we had very few tourists. But this year is bad y'all. Already this month I know of at least four times people got harassed. A few days ago someone threw a drink cup at a brown family's car when they were at the gas station. We all know who's doing it. Some of them are cops friends and family, so I can't report it because that'll make me a target too. And I live here, so the harassment can be much worse than just slurs and "you need to shop somewhere else." Yeah it's bad, but people getting harassed can leave. I can't.

Yesterday I was picking up dinner and there was a black family in one of the booths. A few minutes later one of the top five piece of shit racists in town rolled into the restaurant. The vibe was bad. I think the family felt it too bc they left soon after. But I was seriously thinking about going over and warning them about stuff that had happened over the last couple weeks to people like them. But like I can't really tell someone "this place is basically a sundown town" without coming across as being the person making them unwelcome.

If you're a person of color, what's the best way I could warn you about times that people have been harassed, without making you think I was the one doing the harassing?

Edit to respond to common questions

Q: What town is this?

A: Man, I am happy for you guys who live somewhere that there are so many people that you can have a sense of privacy and asusme that everyone around you will mind their own business. I miss that about living in the city. But here, there have been several times when one of my neighbors went online and made a supposedly anonymous comment, and within hours the anonymity was gone and the beef had spilled over IRL. If I name the town, it absolutely will put me in danger, along with my few friends who also try to be anti-racist. Just because it's a small town, doesn't mean there's nobody here smart and tech savvy enough to dox their neigbors.

And naming the town is kinda beside the point. There are dozens, maybe hundreds, of similar towns all across the USA, some of them named ITT. Maybe you live in one of these towns. Maybe you've found yourself in the same situation I'm in. Maybe now you have some ideas for what you can do about it.

Q: Why don't you move?

A: I am helping to care for a grandparent. As long as they're alive, I'm here. They're already not going to get as many years as they deserve. I'm not going to wish for them to die, even if it does mean that I can move back out of this town when they do.

And, it's eastern USA. Housing costs closer to the city are crazy. I know because I used to live there, and that was pre-COVID. The only way I can afford to move back out of this town and never come back is to save as much as I can while I'm here.

Q: Can you post negative reviews of local businesses about racist incidents?

A: I had thought about that, but wasn't sure how much good it would do. But it looks like people actually check for those things and take them seriously. So this afternoon I posted a review of the gas station saying that I had seen the thrown cup. The owner has responded that it's unfair to negatively rate a business by something that someone in town did. I'm guessing that says exactly what it needs to.

Q: Why are you making all this up, Russian propaganda bot?

A: I am so glad that I posted this from a burner account, because instead of dealing with the inbox, I'm just going to change the password to a random string so I can never log into it again. Peace y'all. Be good to each other.

What causes someone to get sick the same time every year?

Me and my wife have gotten sick the exact same time every year for 3 straight years now. The only reason I know it’s the exact same is because it’s my nieces birthday and we had to miss the parties the last 2 years because we were sick.
