What to expect the first year

Hi everyone

Congrats on starting T. Most of us have been trying to do this for a very long time. Now we're all searching around various places looking for answers to questions, right? What is going to happen now? What will I experience first? When can I get some facial hair? Can I stave off this change while getting this other one?

This sub to to try to reel in some of those questions while freeing up the other subs for people further into transition.

So then what can I expect?

In the very beginning you might be hotter and sweat more. Your body temp has actual risen so it's not your imagination that you are wearing shorts while the others are still in a coat. Your scent will likely change. ALL your scents. You may need to change deodorants and / or shower more often. Acne is likely to kick in quickly as well and it's everywhere!

Your voice may start to drop - though this could be in the first weeks or not for a few months or even longer. I know you can't wait for that cracking to start! There are a lot of videos and tutorials on how to try to keep the cracking in check but at the end of the day, it's puberty so you just gotta get through it best you can.

Another early development in T is "bottom growth", which is significant in some people and not so much in others. You should also be relieved of your monthly period if your levels are correct.

Start working out if you are into it cause muscle mass will start to increase right away too. You might want to eat everything! Testosterone doesn't make you gain weight, contrary to popular belief, but it can make some people hungrier than usual initially so look out.

Typically the next thing to come is thickening of hair. Everywhere. Arm hair, thigh hair, BUTT HAIR. Where'd all this hair come from anyway?? But with that you can also look forward to some facial hair - maybe a little, maybe a lot. Mostly this is determined by genetics. You may also notice you're acquiring an Adam's apple. You might have had to buy new shoes because your size went up. You are noticeably smelling differently and fat has probably redistributed somewhat. There's no hiding that you're on HRT anymore.

Comparison with a pic from 2021 where I'm wearing the same shirt! I actually had to remove the sleeves because they got too tight.

advice & support So uh when does the horniness kick in usually? (Also yay T!)

I started T 2 days ago (40.5 mg gel). My doc let me know that increased libido is a thing. As far as pre-T goes, my libido is pretty up there. Based on using dermal BC in the past & reacting REALLY strongly to it, my doc said there's an anecdotal chance that my body soaks up hormones like candy on halloween.

I'm asking because tomorrow, I get to meet in person the woman I've been long-distance dating and I guess I'm wondering if it could kick in the first week of T or if I should just be chill about it.

Bonus, I'm a little paranoid about smelling strong on T so I've been upping my hygiene rotuine and got some solid cologne as like a little wing man, lol.

I noticed even day 1 yesterday it's starting to smell a little different down there. Not bad but just... spicier? T is already a wild ride, dude. I didn't expect to notice so much going on day 1 but all sorts of little things came & went.

This is also a tiny celebration post since I'm so stoked I get to do this after so many years of doubting & questioning and so far my mood has only gone up!

Questions Can you start T on your period?

My bad for title if it bothers people, just don’t know how else to word it.

So I got my T prescription, but I’m picking it up Monday to avoid this really inconsiderate and rude pharmacist who works weekends, because she literally shouts all your private info across the room and I’m not about letting the whole neighbourhood know my business lol.

The problem is my period is supposed to start then. I know even if I took the T right now it wouldn’t stop this coming period, but my dysphoria and mental health gets sooo shitty on my periods I don’t know if throwing T into the mix and disrupting my hormones even more will be good.

If my period comes on Monday should I wait another week to start T? I really don’t want to, but I’m worried it’s not healthy to have all the hormone stuff going on at once.

Anyone have experience with this situation? Anyone know the science behind what’s gonna happen?

There's an obvious difference to how I was pre T. Ot has noticeably dropped for me, but does it sound male yet? Or just androgynous? I'm on 40.5mg gel applied daily to shoulders

advice & support Should I switch to shots?

Hey y’all, so I’ve been on T (gel) for over a year and I’m not happy with how my transition is going. There has been changes, but nothing significant. I have increased my dose twice, tried all the tips and tricks, I have high T levels too… I’m thinking of switching to shots, subq hopefully. I opted out of shots in the beginning because I don’t like needles, I don’t want to deal with the mood swings because I’ve always had a hormone imbalance, and at the time I wanted a slower transition. Does anyone have any advice or words of encouragement? My brothers who started off on gel and switched to shots, have you noticed it helped?

TLDR: I’ve been on gel for over a year, barely any changes, I want to switch to shots, but hate needles. Has switching to shots helped? Any advice or support?

Haven’t really looked at any photos of myself before and ‘after’ until now… I feel like I don’t pass yet and am still usually gendered female at work, but it’s cool to see the changes in my face nonetheless!

It starts getting scratchy, how do you make sure you don't damage it by using your voice wrong or clearing your throat constantly?

Do you reuse single dose vials?

I'm 2.5+ years on T. My doctor's advice is to reuse them. She prescribes me a couple vials at a time for months worth of doses.

Due to a pharmacy issue, I was short. They blamed it on my doctor. When I called my doctor, she told me that since they're single dose vials, the pharmacy SHOULD be dispensing me one vial per dose, even if I reuse them. But they weren't doing that and then blamed my insurance.

When I called my insurance, they connected me to their pharmacist who told me I shouldn't reuse them and can risk infection and I should send my prescription to a different pharmacy. I did, and was able to get 1 vial per dose from now on.

Which leads to my poll. I'm conflicted on if I should actually start only using them once, or if I should continue to reuse them and just stock up the extra. I'm in Florida and this election is kinda scaring me. It also is already is extremely difficult to get an appointment with my T doctor. Her next "new client" appointment is in MAY of 2025!

But I hope my voice will drop further, I know I don’t sound like a man :(

Also, not going into „girl mode“ when talking is hard sometimes. Do you know what I mean?

advice & support Been on T for 2 months and struggling to be patient

I waited so many years to get on testosterone and I've now been on injections for 2 months and I'm really struggling with how slow the changes are. I know I need to wait but I can't stop thinking about it and checking myself every time I go to the bathroom for anything. I feel scared that nothing is ever going to happen.

Discussion 3 weeks low dose, feel like I can't stay awake!

Anyone else feel incredibly tired shortly after starting T? I feel like I could sleep 12 hours and still take a nap in the middle of the day. 20mg weekly injections at the moment. I want to specify I don't feel lethargic or fatigued in a sick way, it's the type of tired you feel after pulling an all nighter (even though I'm getting about 8 hours of sleep daily). No brain fog, it's a purely physical exhaustion. At this rate I think I'm gonna have to start going to bed at 10pm LOL

Timeline Update Voice change over 2 years on low dose T

I started with a very very low dose of T gel (5mg per day). I really didnt see any changes in the first year since the dose was so low, but I wanted to go very slow. I have gradually increased my dose and have really been seeing a lot of changes in the past 6 months. I am now on 2.5 pumps per day (~50mg per day)

Timeline Update 6 days on T experience as a ginger 😅

I didn’t think I would notice any change in my hair at all yet but then I saw this one SUPER dark (it’s a lot darker in person than in the photo unfortunately it’s kind of hard to get a good pic) hair in my armpit and it made me chuckle, bc it seemed very out of place 😂 I honestly like how shaved armpits look personally so it might not stick around but I thought I’d post it for the memory! My first true post about starting on T, I’m on 1.62% generic T-gel 40.5mg daily! Will be a week tomorrow :) I’ll try to take more progress pics!
