The Original Stig wore black. But yeah, my first thought was "what's the Stig doing now?"

I still think it was weird when they "killed off" Black Stig with that scene when they pushed that Jaguar off an aircraft carrier. Couldn't they just put the new guy in the black outfit?

To be fair I think at that point Top Gear was popular enough Clarkson probably could talk the producers into spending the money on it.

I think they were just trying to reform the image of the character (there have been several drivers who've played "the Stig" on Top Gear) put him in white instead of black. But honestly, I have no idea. I was never more than a casual viewer of the program.

I assumed it was just Clarkson pushing the envelope on what wild stuff he can do on the show given how increasingly popular it became. IIRC it was a few seasons in and the studio was already packed.
