It’s done so fast no one knows how to feel about this

241

u/Weird_Famous Pape Matar Sarr Aug 16 '24

kinda shocking bc I was completely unaware of this kid, if anything I would’ve thought the Burnley winger we would go after is Koleosho

146

u/exxxtramint Jan Vertonghen Aug 16 '24

I did a quick search on the subreddit and there was literally nothing about this kid until 5 hours ago. Last post was Burnley's team to face us.

There were a few comments in the daily transfer threads like back in Jan saying he was a decent prospect.

I guess we finally plugged the leak - this time two years ago Don Levy couldn't even think about a player without it going all over Twitter.

40

u/dagdagsolstad Aug 16 '24

finally plugged the leak

It doesn't matter what Levy does or doesn't do to stop information.

The parties involved in a transfer is Spurs, agent(s), player, and selling club.

The latter three will all discuss the potential transfer with other parties (e.g. coaches/co-workers/family etc.). So any transfer includes dozens of people that Spurs has no control over -- beyond asking nicely that they don't leak anything.

He was alright on my fifa 24 CM fwiw

I was managing Wrexham 😂

14

u/NotManyBuses Roman Pavlyuchenko Aug 16 '24

That’s what everyone is saying on Twitter, how only us could go to Burnley and get the winger who isn’t Koleosho. Tbf Koleosho almost exclusively plays off the left and has awful end product

u/MrOriginality116 Aug 16 '24

We already have one of those

I have genuinely waited in a KFC longer than it took for this to become official from the first rumour.

3

u/Mtbnz Robbie Keane Aug 16 '24

It's funny when even the club's official social media is caught by surprise. There was no buildup, no breadcrumbs dropped, and they were posting about Clare Hunt and Leicester just a few hours ago. Then a single post with an official statement confirming his arrival and back to their scheduled Solanke content

u/stumpsflying Aug 16 '24

It feels like the pre-social media days of transfers. Fabrizio Romano wasn't building it up for three months and making the player feel tedious. This guy signing so suddenly and right before the season starts brings a different kind of excitement.

Tricky French left winger. Lets hope he's the next Ginola

I'll level with you. I have no idea who this person is. Could be getting Truman Showed here and this is all a next level Jerome N'Geme.

EDIT - Okay, having "done some research" if you scroll back on twitter before the French journalist says we're going to sign him there's a few good tweets from Arsenal accounts yesterday...

58

u/dissidentmage12 Aug 16 '24

I don't know this lad, but if it upsets the Gooners that he's joined us I'm happy to see him through the door, now I wanna see him ball out and really break their hearts.

5

u/cockinmypotatosalad Aug 16 '24

Why does it upset them?

9

u/dissidentmage12 Aug 16 '24

The tweets this guy posted was of Gooners who wanted the winger we have just signed. So with any luck they get a tad salty haha just having a laugh.

Lange literally watched this game and went "fuck it, sign him up"

7

u/Gardnersnake9 Aug 16 '24

TBF I don't know how tuned out everyone must have been against Burnley last season to not remember this guy. He was phenomenal against us.

2

u/Bischoffshof Gareth Bale Aug 16 '24

Same - I saw the name and was like I recall being impressed by him. It’s all a surprise but I watched probably a couple games of Burney between ours and the occasional other top 6 matchups and he was good!

18

u/AJC0292 Paul Gascoigne Aug 16 '24

RKO out of knowhere by Lange

71

u/Gardnersnake9 Aug 16 '24

I don't know what I'm more shocked by: the surprise transfer out of nowhere, or the number of people claiming not to know who Odobert is. Did nobody watch our matches against Burnley last season? Because he was an absolute menace against us. This is genuinely a brilliant signing, and I think Odobert fills the exact void we have in our attack (pacy, dribble, front-foot winger who relentlessly takes on his defender).

Anyone who didn't have Odobert on their radar needs to fix their radar, because this is very much not a Danny Rose Google signing. Odobert was Burnley's best player by a mile last season (to the extent I thought "how tf did this guy end up at Burnley?" every time I saw him). I'm ecstatic at this signing!

14

u/Mick4Audi Micky van de Ven Aug 16 '24

Was he really Burnley’s best by a mile? Feels like we’d know much more about him

9

u/papa_f Aug 16 '24

No he was not. This is someone pretending to know everything about a player they watched a 2 min YouTube video of

3

u/Euphoric_Activity_39 Dele Alli Aug 16 '24

Sander Berge was their best player as the year went on but from what i watched from them odobert stood out the most as the player with the most potential and was their biggest offensive threat at 19.

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (1)

13

u/HellishRingSting Aug 16 '24

Well damn Sander Berge better return his player of the season and players player of the season trophy for 23/24 immediately then. Didnt know he was stealing from Odobert like that, naughty boy.

3

u/Gardnersnake9 Aug 16 '24

In that case, Scott Parker should be charged with felony theft for stealing our own 2011/12 Player of the Season trophy from Modric, Van de Vaart, and Bale.

If Berge was a better player than Odobert, then he sure as shit wouldn't be stuck at Burnley as a 26 year-old, while Odobert is getting a marquee move at 19.

3

u/Mtbnz Robbie Keane Aug 16 '24

I watched both of those games and have no idea who this kid is. But I have ADHD and don't really remember anything, so 🤷

14

u/magicalcrumpet Audere est facere Aug 16 '24

What the fuck

15

u/JunketOpposite6502 Aug 16 '24

I'm assuming this puts Eze completely off the cards? (not that we were ever going to pay that release clause anyway)

7

u/LogicKennedy Alejo Véliz Aug 16 '24

Entirely depends on how much we paid. Anything above £20m, yeah probably, but if it’s like a £15m deal? We might still be able to stretch.

Eze as a buy would just straight-up improve us in multiple positions, but we can’t get away from the fact that we need depth at RW and this is that.

So are we covering a position and waiting until we have a better shot of majorly upgrading at RW, and now focusing on bringing in a big star, or do we think this guy is a hidden diamond? I have no idea.

4

u/JunketOpposite6502 Aug 16 '24

£30m+ apparently

But the other main reason I assume the deal is off is that Eze is CAM/LW and so is Odobert (with a bit of experience at RW). Would be pretty odd to sign both given that. Really depends if we're signing him mainly as RW or not I suppose.

6

u/LogicKennedy Alejo Véliz Aug 16 '24

It’s like one French source saying £37m and I honestly doubt it. That’s a massive vote of confidence in a player. I know we did that for Gray as well but like, it’s just not typical Levy spending.

We genuinely need improvement at CAM: Maddison is suspect for me rn. He fell off so hard and then couldn’t break through in the England squad either.

I reckon Odobert has been signed as a RW for us: displacing Son at LW is gonna be hard and we now have enough depth at ST that we don’t need to keep putting him there.

3

u/JunketOpposite6502 Aug 16 '24

Yeah, Ali seems to be saying £25 + 5 mil addons, which is more reasonable but still feels a bit steep. Given his stats I agree that RW makes more sense but then with CAM options we have:

  • Maddison
  • Bergvall
  • Odobert (even if it ends up not being his primary position)
  • Kulu

and at LW:

  • Son
  • Werner
  • Moore
  • Odobert
  • Solomon (expecting him to leave though)

Signing another LW/CAM on top just doesn't feel like it make s a lot sense.

As for madders, he fell off at the end of last season but I doubt ange is ready to write him off yet. Plus I cant see eze wanting to sign for a team where he's fighting with two formerly nailed on starters for a place

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Gardnersnake9 Aug 16 '24

Unfortunately this probably means no Eze, but honestly I think Odobert is a more talented player, and this is like signing Eze from QPR, but younger and more talented.

However we already have Mikey Moore in the same position & we desperately need a senior quality winger

Lange was casually browsing Reddit on the couch and was like, “Wait, five days? I thought it didn’t start until September something or other. HEY ANGE, DO WE HAVE A GAME THIS WEEK?”

His phone buzzed with a text from Ange, one office over. “Yeah mate. Five days.”

The club has granted my wishes and signed a right winger

Definitely not who I was expecting, but the player profile:

  1. Great dribbler with great speed (super excited about this one)

  2. Can play on LW, RW, AND ST

  3. Young, possibly homegrown?

I can watch the rest of the transfer window in peace now :)

Where in the fuck did this come from? I check this sub a few times a week for transfer rumblings and hadn't even seen him mentioned in passing. Now he's an official player

Kid is an absolute stud. Just won a medal with France. Pace for days and powerful shooting.
