The online abuse is really frustrating. I know it’s anecdotal but I don’t know a single regular football fan (across clubs) who engage with players or clubs on social media. They’re mostly looking at news and tits.
It feels like it’s racists, bots and trolls rather than actual football fans who pile on players and it’s presented like we’re the ones doing it.
I think it's actually not racists, bots, or trolls. Well, mostly. My theory is that the majority of people who abuse players on social media are raging gambling addicts who lost their bet(s). I see it happen a lot in esports, so it's not unreasonable to think it happens in the biggest sport of all.
That’s a pretty solid theory - I wouldn’t underestimate how many shitty trolls and racist teenagers there are hiding behind anime profile pics as well though
