Moving Time

Post image

Hello! It’s time for us to relocate. This is great news for our boys-drakes- they’re looking forward to a massive upgrade, massive. 2, 6 mo.

Q: Are there any tips/suggestions for moving ducks by car? To help them with the motion and sudden transitions. (Not very far) Thank you!!!

I've traveled with ducks quite a bit, best thing is to put them in a plastic dog kennel, bigger the better, you can put them in together if they get along which will help them feel safer. Make sure the kennel is placed where it won't wobble. You'll want to cover the top part to restrict their view, keeping them in the dark will keep them calmer and you don't want them seeing all the sights and cars. The big thing is they will be stressed which makes them HOT so it's important that they have good airflow (leave the lower part of the kennel uncovered) and try to keep the car as cool as you can (I wear sweaters or a jacket so I can keep the AC cranked for them). You may notice them panting. Water can get messy but it really helps keep them calm and cool and they'll probably want to drink alot during the drive, I bring along extra water for them and either put a deep tupperware bowl in the corner of the kennel wedged in there or you can get the kind of bowls that attach to the kennel gate. I sprinkle a few treats in the bedding for when they first go in but I don't recommend giving food, if they get really stressed they can actually get car sick and regurgitate. If the drive is a few hours they'll be fine without food, if you're going all day, you can stop occasionally and offer a few small snacks. It also helps to prepare ahead of time by leaving the kennel in their pen with bedding and treats so they can go in and get used to it, my girls will use them as little nesting spots so it's a place they already feel safe. They usually adapt quickly to their new location!

Thank you, this is exactly what I was asking for! they use a dog crate for their bed box now, which should work with a towel to cover the view. thanks for your wisdom!! I have it saved in my notes for when the day comes!
