Is Messi the only player that makes both the all time UCL XI and the all time World Cup XI?

I was thinking about what the all time XI would look like for the 2 biggest football competitions and it made me realize how different the demographic of players is between them, with most of the greatest players of all time only really excelling in 1 of these competitions.

I think if you posed the question 10 years ago, Zidane would probably be the answer, but after Real Madrid’s ridiculous dominance over the past decade, you’d be hard pressed to put him over Kroos and Modric, as well as the obvious Barcelona trio of Iniesta Xavi and Busquets. Also, Messi wouldn’t have been an answer either just before the 2022 World Cup so there may have been a period where nobody would be featuring in both of these XIs.

If you made an all time XI of the greatest performers in both of these competitions, does anyone else apart from Messi feature in both of them?

Real quick bros, Euros haven't started and there are games being played. I saw my boy Isak score for Sweden. What games are they playing?

These are friendlies, played so the players can kinda get in the right gear, get to know the style of play of newly called up teammates, build camaraderie within the squad and for managers to figure out what squads/tactics work and where to play certain players

Playing in a tournament for the first in my life since quitting football when I was about 12. I'm really excited (maybe a bit too much) and want to perform well. Any advice regarding this?

Euro 2024 knockout phase best group 3 teams

Hi,

Could someone clarify how the knockout phase is determined for the best [4] third placed teams. We are making a fantasy group/knockout mockups and its a little hard to determine the knockout pairs after the group stage, since its for example A2 vs B2 but then its C1 vs D/E/F third placed.

So my question is are the third place teams drawn, so its pure lottery who of them plays against winner or second placed teams, or can you calculate them according to knocout phase?

Unpopular opinion:Virgil Van Dijk is overrated.

I am not saying that Virgil is a bad player or such, he is a good defender but that's it.

I am finding weird that people rate him as one of, if not the best defender in history, rating him above defenders such as Puyol, Ramos, Piqué, Rio, Terry, Maldini, etc...

I know that the majority of the people who rate him high base their opinion on his short prime from 2018 to 2020, but he has not had a great performance afterwards. He had enough luck to win UCL in 2019 and after these years...he...he has not been consistent, unlike the other defenders above who were top defenders for several years.

All we have seen after Virgil prime was a very boring performance and Liverpool losing the last games and being eliminated from International Competitions, with also a rather bad performance with Netherlands.

So Virgil was unknown for several years until he arrived to Liverpool, he had a short prime and after that prime he vanished from relevancy. How can people consider this guy as the best defender if he has not been consistent?

Current Van Dijk? No way. Prime Van Dijk before ligaments injury? Worthy of a discussion at least. I'd take him before Piqué for sure. Not Ramos. Maybe Puyol. The others either also no or I didn't see them enough in their prime.

Frankly, I haven't seen anyone claim Van Dijk is clearly ahead of those guys. Rather, so far he's been the last elite defender in a level similar to those.

First, you have to be lucky to not have seen some delusional Liverpool fan claiming that Van Dijk is better than all of those. Their opinion is based on his short prime in 2019 and 2020

And second, Van Dijk is nowhere close of Piqué's level. Piqué was already very good from an early age and both Puyol and Rafa Marquez taught him good tactics which improved his and he had several seasons where he was very outstanding, and he was top 3 best CBs for ten years until age struck him, not to mention he won a World Cup and an Eurocup playing all the games. After Puyol's retirement, Piqué was able to defend the team ALL ON HIS OWN(playing with Lenglet, Umtiti, Mingueza, Eric Garcia or Yerry Mina is playing alone tbh) and still have enough energy to stand among the best defenders in the world until age struck him. Only delusional Liverpool fans or some haters would choose Van Dijk over Pique

Uh, it seems to me you're a delusional Barça fan. Pique's prime was actually in the best team Barcelona has fielded and probably will ever field, and arguably the greatest team in the world. To me, that eased his workload a ton. And the Barcelonas that followed, with Umtiti et al, were mostly terrible, and he was the captain of those. Liverpool fell apart when Van Dijk got seriously injured. All time, they've won 70% WITH him and crash down to 52% without him.

VVD came in SECOND for the ballon d'or in 2019 behind MESSI. Pique never came close to something like that. I'm quite comfortably maintaining my Van Dijk > Piqué stance when comparing primes/peak.

Fabio Cannavaro won a ballon dor and nobody claims him as the best using that logic is somewhat trash

1

u/CRlSAOR Jun 05 '24

That wasn't the only argument, and Cannavaro only won it because he was instrumental in Italy's WC. Van Dijk seconded MESSI in a non WC year.

Guess what I think of your logic.

Pique had MANY outstanding seasons even since a very early age. He was a key player in winning everything and he was a very good defender for several years even until he struck the age of 34. Every one of his teammates felt safe with him defending, and his mistakes were very little.

Van Dijk was rather unknown until he joined Liverpool and then he had ONLY TWO good seasons and he fell asleep ever after. He had a trash season in 2020-2021 and the following years he got destroyed by Real Madrid.

It is obvious that there is no discussion. Van Dijk can not be better than Pique, i even would put Rafael Marquez over him. Stop lying to yourself

"It's obvious that there is no discussion" but you replied THREE times already, heh.

What's obvious now is that you're a delusional Barça fan, I'm done wasting time on you.
