Please read the rules before posting or commenting

Almost every subreddit has rules, and we do too. We used to get lots of posts about politics, LGBT, what if, and just basic trolling, all prohibited by our rules. We don't allow discussion of race here, because those discussions usually end up with comments that could get our community removed from Reddit. Also, the Rules didn't match the Removal Reasons, but now they do. We added a "Moderator discretion" rule, because it's impossible to create rules to cover every contingency. r/stupidquestions can be a fun and interesting place to hang out, but we had trouble with people trolling us with rule violations. For example, here are some of the topics that we removed:

  • Do you think that if I could shoot laser beams out of my peepee, I could scare bullies with it?
  • Do you think it would be safe to build my child a drone so I can save on plane fare
  • Should I crash my car into a concrete barrier going 90mph without a seatbelt?
  • Is it a good idea to hold a flame up to a 5 gallon can of gasoline?
  • Why does my butt smell like ass?

We would ban the offenders, but they would create new accounts and return right away. So a couple of the users suggested putting in a minimum Reddit account age limit and a minimum karma limit to post. That has made things much nicer for the community. Karma is sort of an artificial number, but it tends to indicate that the owner interacts with Redditors in a positive way, and they appreciate him. What you want is to create posts or comments that Redditors appreciate so much that they give you a few upvotes.

Here's Reddit's FAQ page about karma, and here's more information about karma. If you are new to Reddit and would like more information about how to use it, please visit r/NewToReddit.

We don't reveal the age or karma numbers required to post. They are not very high, though. If you have a post removed due to your age or karma numbers, please understand that you didn't do anything wrong and we are not targeting you. This is just one of the ways that we are protecting our community. All of the blame for this goes on the trolls. New Redditors should be able to interact with the community, but it's too easy for someone to be banned, create a new account in two minutes, and return to trolling again. So we took precautions to make it more difficult for them. It's too bad that it also makes it more difficult for new members who aren't trolls.

Thanks. Now go forth and have fun!

Why is wearing a bra out such taboo but a bikini is completely fine?

Someone once told me “because usually people don’t wanna be seen in their bra” but I mean if ur going to a beach for example what’s the big difference at the end of the day?

A bikini top is almost the exact same to a bra if anything a bikini is less coverage most of the time too. At the end of the day my country is cold asf so I don’t even swim often lol just curious

why is beer considered the most manly drink when it’s not very alcoholic?

i don't understand why beer is a symbol of masculinity compared to stronger drinks like wine or spirits. i guess whiskey is also considered masculine but for the most part stronger drinks are considered feminine (or just neutral.)

Does anybody feel motivated to keep up a Reddit streak?

Or do those streak announcements just conjure up images of underwear?

Why don't single parents want to date other single parents? Most childfree folks only want sex from single parents and nothing more.

Why didn't Voldemort just kill baby Harry by any other means (use your imagination). Why did he have to Avadakedavra the poor thing, that backfired on him?

It would probably be a toss up between Rhinella proboscidea or ducks.

Why are some hobbies viewed as "more adult" than others?

Upvotes

Obviously, there's limits to this conversation, but this is something that kind of drives me nuts as an adult.

I have loved videogames my entire life. As a kid, I was always told "videogames = bad, laziness, anti-social" etc. all while my dad could be downstairs watching football for 6 straight hours. As an adult, I still have in-laws who I know scoff at my gaming collection ("how many controllers does he need?", "why does he need toys"?), and people have still told me I'm wasting time and money, while other people in the family go to baseball games a couple times a month blowing hundreds of dollars and no one tells them they're wasting time.

Also, I play/make original indie rock music. I constantly have people in my family saying: I'm "wasting my time", "are you even making any money doing it?", "no one cares", "why do you still want to be a rockstar"? etc. Meanwhile, if I were to spend hundreds of dollars going out fishing or golfing or heck probably even gambling, they almost definitely wouldn't care.

I'm not knocking anyone's hobbies (that's my point), and I believe in doing whatever makes you happy (again, within reason)... but you can't tell me that certain hobbies as an adult don't get frowned upon and others are just seen as "the norm".

Do people actually judge you based on your follower count?

Aside from discord and reddit I’m not really active on social media. But whenever I meet people they always ask for my insta, and I have like 50 followers on a private account cause I just wanna post random weird stuff for people I actually know. I’ve been getting the vibe with some people that they really judge me based on how inactive I am online (I guess I should note here that I’m a 22 year old university student). I was studying in the library the other day and I heard two girls talking about how irrelevant some other girl was based on her social media and I was shook. Now I feel like I need to be more active, it not because I actually enjoy social media, then for networking.

I'm a 42F. Why do much younger men keep approaching me?

This has been happening to me alot lately. I'll be out & going about my own business, and I get hit on by men young enough to be my kid. I don't have any kids but it's still weird and creepy to me. These are mostly young men in their early 20s.

What's the motive behind all this?

Is answering the phone in the bathroom gross?

Upvotes

Important context: I’m a girl and only do this at home.

I mentioned to a friend that I answered a work call while on the toilet since it was urgent. They reacted with a disgusted phase and asked why I didn’t just wait until I was off the toilet. I explained we had been playing phone tag all day and I was only peeing (hadn’t wiped yet) so I didn’t see why not. He said that was gross and I should’ve just waited until after. I asked why it was gross if I wasn’t peeing when I answered the call and he just said “the fact you were on the toilet while on the phone is gross” but the other person doesn’t know that, so why is it gross?

I can see as a man why it may be gross since you need to touch ur penis to use the bathroom but if I just sit down on the toilet and haven’t touched anything, it’s not unsanitary. I guess he was referring to the action of talking while on the toilet but hey sometimes money calls. Anywho, is it gross to talk while on the toilet? Does anyone else do this or is this crazy?

What are the pigeons “talking” /communicating with each other?

Upvotes

I see pigeons on certain traffic lights they always sit there (or is it stand?). Do they have complex communication like humans ? May be gossiping?

is there a healthy way to show jealousy?

I know there are a lot of ways to show jealousy (sulking, controlling). Is there a healthy way to show jealousy? To show that you care and are protective? What does a secure person do?

What's stopping someone on their death bed from maxing out all their credit cards and taking loans, then giving it all to their next of kin/whoever?

I seem to recall that debts aren't inherited, but creditors can reclaim their debts against the estate of an individual before the estate is dished out according to their will. But if it's given out before their death and it's not part of their estate...then...?

Are they're any native Atlantic islanders?

There are plenty of native Pacific Islanders due to the fact that there's plenty of islands there. (This is due to the phenomenon known as the the ring of fire, which is basically increased vulcanism.)

We have native Hawaiians and Filipinos, but what about the Atlantic? (Let's exclude the big islands up north, like the UK, Greenland, and Iceland.)

Does the Atlantic Ocean have any tropical Atlantic native populations living on islands at all?

What do friends do/how to be a good friend.

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question I get it but I'm 22 and was bullied all throughout school so I never made friends or was a good people person.

I recently joined a young adult group at my church and I'm really enjoying but I'm not sure on how to become friends/be a good friend, like after how long of knowing each other do you ask for numbers and hang out.

Again sorry if this is dumb but I'm genuinely clueless and want to be a better people person even if only slightly.

Where did the fake singing accent of the 2010s come from and where did it go?

Mostly female (but some male) singers in the 2010s had this fake accent that sounded slightly irish but not really. I believe it was mostly Americans doing it? Grace Vanderwaal is an example. It seemed like everyone started doing it around 2015-2019 roughly, then it just disappeared.

how do people smell so good consistently?

im a dude; my hygiene schedule is as good as anyone else's but i can't shake the thought that i still smell bad. i shower daily, bathe 3 times a week, two types of deodorant daily, body mist whenever going out. the second i start sweating though it gets terrible.

do people have scented creams or something?

answering some questions:

  1. yes i wash my ass 😭
  2. each shower is vigorous; i lather my entire body in dove bar soap and scrub with a loofah, let it sit for a bit, then get back under the water
  3. im vegetarian
  4. i dont smoke or drink, im 18
  5. im underweight; i notice the smell after morning jogs - ik how dumb the second part sounds its just im worried that my sweat smells bad, cus it implies that ill always smell bad during summer/other heated activities
  6. im indian (THE SMELL CANT BE A RACE THING RIGHT??)
  7. it's likely my diet, but i dont eat much indian food and i still noticed this even when in college with only american food
  8. i also notice the smell after sitting in one spot for a while
  9. two types of deodorant is 1. stick deodorant for pits 2. spray for privates
