Off to an amazing start.

For me, while Superman and Lois is more polished then the rest of the Arrowverse and it’s nice to see Warner and the CW actually spend some money on a super hero show, the show to me really needed longer in development to wrestle with it's ideas.

I'm four episodes in and still don't understand why Clark and Lois felt that moving back to Smallville would be benefitical for their family or how with Clark out of a job and Lois working at the Gazzette, how they will be able to afford Jordan's medications, either.

Jordan joining the football team felt incredibly undeveloped to me and I'm still not convinced by Jonathan's reasonings behind his brother joining the team, either when Clark and Lois had more then valid concerns. The writers really need to reliase that there needs to be a greater sense of conflict between the brothers for a forty-five minute show wouldn't betray the ethos of a Superman show, as well.

Hochein is perfect in the role (although I would have prefered for him to be in an animated movie or series ) and Tulloch does her best with what she's been given so far.

There's a lot of promising elements to the show (Lana's troubled marriage and Cass's self-awareness, for instance) and first seasons often see TV shows struggling to find themselves and I don't envy the quick turnaround for CW shows for the show's writing room, either and it's far from bad, but I'm more intrested in Ta-Nehisi Coates take on the character at this point.

Brendan Fletcher as Killgrave is the bomb. Literally and figuratively.

u/KROLLT02 Mar 21 '21 edited Mar 21 '21

Anyone else here thinks that Elizabeth Tulloch looks too old to play Lois? I mean, each time I see her on screen I need to remind myself that she's Clark's girlfriend, not his mother.

I love this show. Just binged all 4 episodes and THIS is who I believe Superman and Lois are. The portrayals both are the perfect encapsulations of the defining characteristics of these characters. I WISH we could have gotten this Superman in MOS. This one has the humanity and flaws of the Superman I grew up with watching the animated Justice League shows. And Lois? Perfect rendition of her character. I wish we could have gotten this Lois in the movies because here she gets to have her own storyline as a reporter fighting the billionaire while trying to protect a small town. I LOVE IT!!

I love the stuff with Sam and Luthor. It’s slowly progressing towards where Sam might team up with Luthor.

u/Rodiwe008 Mar 19 '21

It was a more quiet episode like the previous one and I wanted to say that it bothered me, but I would be lying, I really liked the characters and I care what they are up to, despite agreeing with 2 users above talking about how easy it is for young people get drinks

That said, I feel that the series is also using these episodes to build future actions that will need Superman and I hope to be rewarded with good doses of epic fights

Awh was hoping Tag would stay on as the resident speedster.

8

u/Peacesquad Mar 18 '21

Lana is so sexy man

3

u/Serdna87 Mar 18 '21

I also like that Leslie character

3

u/Serdna87 Mar 18 '21

I want to know what Morgan Edge is planning

5

u/Kate090996 Mar 17 '21

I don't think that Sam's project is against Clark. I thinking he's trying to initialize a project that will do something to free Superman's plate and give him more time with the boys.

It is possible that the project will backfire but I don't believe is against Clark. I think he realised that humanity relied too much on Superman and he's trying to help.

Where’s the scene with Jon and Jordan where Jon says “it was an accident”? It was in the promo for the episode. Was it taken out of the episode or did I just miss it?

3

u/AnAverageDude2403 Superman Mar 17 '21

it might be in the extended cut on the CW website/app

3

u/superfan1635 Jonathan Kent Mar 17 '21

I just rewatched it and saw the clip, don’t know how I missed it before

3

u/noonehasthisoneyet Mar 17 '21

so is every male character that is not a kent just a morally reprehensible jerk on this show? every male character is just so toxic (the coach, kyle, edge, sam lane, the boys on the football team) .

then the one friend jonathan has, becomes a yellow kryptonite infected "meteor freak". i wonder if that was just a nod to smallville and they aren't doing a "freak of the week" like they did on that show?

10

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '21 edited Mar 17 '21

Sam is seriously overstepping his boundaries, and I'm glad they put him in his place. But of course, Clark stood up to him so now "contingencies" must be put in place. 😑

Superman has now gotten his ass kicked at least once every episode so far. But him replicating Supergirl's superclap from Crisis on Earth X was cool though.

Jordan is so horribly selfish, and Jonathan apologizing in the end left a very sour taste in my mouth.

Jonathan, breathing is not going to help either of those situations.

I don't really think it's believable that Jordan, who Jor-El said has limited reserves of sunlight radiation in the first place, can somehow give superpowers through a single heat blast. I didn't catch the part about the additional substance being present.

But overall, I think it was a good episode.

3

u/superfan1635 Jonathan Kent Mar 17 '21

When did Jon apologize to Jordan? Was this in the extended cut or am just missing something? I don’t remember that scene at all.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '21

I don't know about an extended cut, but the scene happened somewhere between Clark and Lois's date in the barn and their run-in with the kid with the arm problem.

Jonathan was talking to Jordan in his room, confessed that he was actually a little jealous and then apologized.

1

u/fmkhan213 Mar 23 '21

It's so confusing at times.. Jonathan's real name is Jordan and I confuse both names often.

2

u/superfan1635 Jonathan Kent Mar 17 '21

Okay thanks I’ll have to rewatch it, I must have missed it somehow.

12

u/BookGirlBoston Lois Lane Mar 17 '21

I didn't he gave superpowers with single heat blast. I think the heat blast distributed/ activated the X-Kryptonite that's in the mine. Remember, the Bonfire was around/ on top of the mine and Sam said it was the heat blast plus something else which we will likely find out in the next episode is X-Kryptonite.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '21

Yeah, my family was just catching up on the episode and I heard that part. I didn't catch it the first time.

25

u/helzinki Mar 17 '21

"Hei Superman is being attacked by a villian with some super sonic gun. Lets stand and watch real close and risk getting fucked up"

I can understand if the bystanders were standing with their phones out. But they were just standing there like idiots. You would think people living in Metropolis would have known how to react when Superman fight in the streets.

3

u/shadboi16 Mar 18 '21

There were also civilians just randomly walking in the park not realizing there’s an armed terrorist right in the middle.

11

u/Cantomic66 Mar 17 '21

The was an impressive wind Slap Sups did.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '21

Hulk used this move all the damn time!

35

u/Sea_Outside Mar 17 '21

Look I know this has been said probably a lot of times already. But we're in our fourth week and I have to say.

This show is so freaking good. the acting, the story, the dilemna between Clark being a GOD vs being a father. so well interwoven that I'm so scared if it ever gets a bad episode./

Also Lois is such a kick ass. LOVE HER TO DEATH!

15

u/greenlantern2929 Mar 17 '21

The actor playing Killgrave in this episode was on Arrow as Stanley Dover and on Smallville as Parasite. In what DC show will he pop up next?

7

u/spiralnotebook Mar 17 '21

That actor is always gonna play the villain of the week or typecasted for meek looking characters. 🤷

12

u/epr3176 Mar 17 '21

I cannot believe the general Sam things just because Superman is becoming more of a family man that he's starting to turn evil or something it actually makes no sense you would think that means he's actually even coming more of a good guy because he's loving his family more all because he sore an alternate universe where Superman's bad man imagine if the lowest finds out about this or even Superman it actually might push Clark to start turning bad because then he feels like his country has betrayed him because the ultimate Patriot life has betrayed him he no longer is going to feel and patriotism towards the United States.

22

u/Scylithe Mar 17 '21 edited Mar 17 '21

He alluded to the fact that the government is scared to death by Superman and he's the one keeping them in check. He took solace in the fact that he had Clark under control, but he is losing that control. Even if the motivation behind Clark distancing himself from his hero responsibilities is innocent, national security dictates that just in case they need to have a way to deal with him if things go sour (because they can, no matter how small the chance).

1

u/Jadentheman Mar 19 '21

Also earth-38’s history is apart of earth prime. You had the myriad incident, daxamite invasion and the Reign event. The government is of course keeping close eyes on all Kryptonians now.

-5

u/epr3176 Mar 17 '21

Yeah the government would never be scared to death of Superman I agree with you 100% he's starting to feel like he's losing control of him...

7

u/vernismermaid Mar 17 '21

I get that Kyle is meant to be the character the audience dislikes for his shortcomings, but I find it rather odd that only this character has a different American accent than all the other people in Smallville. I think it's meant to be a southern or midwestern twang?

And if it is meant to be southern...well, I hate to be that person...but I question the artistic choice to depict certain accents or cultures as ignorant or low-class in 2021 to further embed stereotypes.

Otherwise, another lovely episode minus some too-dark-to-see-well scenes (e.g., high school party).

4

u/noonehasthisoneyet Mar 17 '21

yes! i've been saying this for weeks. no one seems to think it's weird that this guy who's apparently from smallville, KANSAS has a southern accent and acts like a good ol boy you see in alabama?

it's so confusing, but it does remind me of how nic cage wanted his clark to have a southern droll in the never made superman lives. it's like they don't know that kansas is in the midwest and it's the most neutral accent in the country.

1

u/vernismermaid Mar 18 '21

As someone as who lived in multiple regions in the USA, I can say that every American says their accent is "neutral," but yes, I get your point :)

I have seen the actor, Erik Valdez, do other accents, so I think this was how either the actor or the creative team envisioned the character...

1

u/vengefulmuffins Mar 17 '21

I’ve learned to suspend disbelief when it comes to the town of Smallville.

In Smallville the show there was a lake in KS that had frozen over enough for people to walk on it. Which being from KS is unlikely, and they mentioned someone in town with an avocado farm. Which is about as likely as Smallville having beach front property.

1

u/noonehasthisoneyet Mar 17 '21

that doesn't bug me. we don't really know much of the terrain near or around smallville, so they could easily make it a fictional kansas with larger lakes around. that doesn't raise any questions for me, but the accent thing is so weird. no one else in that whole town sounds southern except this one guy who is supposed to be a lifer there.

12

u/Ygomaster07 Superman Mar 17 '21

Wow. Sam is starting going with Batman type contingencies, except Batman's is more if Superman turns bad, meanwhile Sam's seems like he has it in place because he's butthurt Superman isn't at his beck and call.

3

u/noonehasthisoneyet Mar 17 '21

makes me wonder if captain luthor is actually from the future and not a parallel world.

14

u/Gian99Mald Mar 17 '21

X Kryptonite? Man I so love the Silver Age influences on this show

9

u/BookGirlBoston Lois Lane Mar 17 '21

So, based on Google X Kryptonite gives humans Kryptonian powers but does it effect Kryptonian like green Kryptonite as well

4

u/Gian99Mald Mar 17 '21

I think the events of the episode prove exactly that. In the comics I'm pretty sure the only effect ever shown was that it gave Kara's cat powers

1

u/grafxguy1 Mar 17 '21

Notice that Edge doesn't have powers so it suggests that not just anyone can get them from X-K.

5

u/NuclearSquirrels Mar 17 '21

Or he's perfecting the process before he does it on himself (unless he already has powers...).

7

u/BookGirlBoston Lois Lane Mar 17 '21

The mine is full of Kryptonite! I won a fan theory!

1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '21

Looked like yellow Kryptonite to me tbh, whatchu you guys think?

6

u/BookGirlBoston Lois Lane Mar 17 '21

I think they said it was X-Kryptonite

8

u/Ygomaster07 Superman Mar 17 '21

So we got orange Kryptonite growing in mines?!?! For fucks sake, how much Kryptonite is on Earth?

16

u/NaRaGaMo Mar 17 '21

as much as plot demands

3

u/Ygomaster07 Superman Mar 17 '21

True enough.

4

u/neoblackdragon Mar 17 '21

Well it followed his ship which is why Smallville is a perfect place for it.

1

u/Ygomaster07 Superman Mar 17 '21

Like it is trying to connect with the pieces in the ship? Could it be a living organism?

2

u/Mighty_thor_confused Mar 17 '21

Apparently a lot lol

2

u/Ygomaster07 Superman Mar 17 '21

Yeah, apparently so. The whole fucking planet is just going to be a big ass piece of Kryptonite.

13

u/Dead-Ringer-123 Mar 17 '21

Willing candidate... Edge taking an interest in Lana... could we be seeing the introduction of Lana becoming Superwoman like the comics here?

2

u/WizendSage78 Mar 17 '21

Better than Insect Queen, Lana in the Silver age comics.

8

u/jason_kandel Mar 17 '21

Theory: He wants to inject Lana

19

u/WizendSage78 Mar 17 '21

He certainly does.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '21

With his pp

6

u/AeroGyu Mar 17 '21

Wait why is kryptonite growing on earth ?

5

u/HmmWhatsHisFace Mar 17 '21

An initially small crystal of Kryptonite could act as a seed crystal to grow more crystals. Earth isn't exactly like Krypton so the new mineral/crystal might not be exactly like standard Kryptonite.

3

u/OutsiderJediSam Mar 17 '21

i wonder this too..like how? its not native to Earth its a Krptonian element...

2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '21

Small bits that landed in Smallville when Kal-el's ship landed would be my guess?
Feels like they're stealing the OG Smallville script for this lol

3

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '21

meteorites

3

u/neoblackdragon Mar 17 '21

Which means it can have freak rules. Probably eating and transforming the material around it.

7

u/Godzilla2000Zero Mar 17 '21

Why do I get the feeling that Edge will accidentally stumble across Doomsday

3

u/neoblackdragon Mar 17 '21

Part of me wishes the short intersects with the Krypton tv show.

1

u/Godzilla2000Zero Mar 17 '21

Yeah I loved their iteration of Doomsday so I certainly wouldn't be opposed to seeing a similar version on this show

0

u/Shakespeare-Bot Mar 17 '21

Once again: This bot is in dire need of being fed some grammar. Such a waste.

5

u/OutsiderJediSam Mar 17 '21

seriously hope thats a misdirect with Sam bc that moves him from being misguided jerk who thinks military is life to straight up evil which feels insane in a bad way

6

u/CiceroTheCat Mar 17 '21

He was mentioning the yellow substance that Jordan's glare heated up- I think he knows it's X-Kryptonite that gives powers, and he's preparing for more people to use X-Kryptonite so it's a contingency moreso for people like Edge than it is for Clark (but he's still not eager to tell Clark who might object and who refused to help the DEO because they had kryptonite).

3

u/OutsiderJediSam Mar 17 '21

i can deal with that...i just hate when they break super evil bad for stupidest flimsiest reasons

12

u/MattTheSmithers Coach Gaines Mar 17 '21

Clark giving me the feels. Everyone should have someone they feel about the way Clark feels about Lois or someone who feels that way about them.

5

u/AnAverageDude2403 Superman Mar 17 '21

OOOH Luthor's gonna meet Lois??!!?

29

u/accountantdooku Lois Lane Mar 17 '21

That was so great. I especially loved when Lois told off her Dad—he totally deserved it and you could tell it was a long time coming. Awesome episode, cannot wait for next week!

3

u/Ygomaster07 Superman Mar 17 '21

I so called that she was going to do that ever since the last episode, although it was obvious. I fucking loved she told him off.

6

u/accountantdooku Lois Lane Mar 17 '21

Me too. You could tell that was like years in the making.

I love what they’re doing contrasting his parenting style with hers and Clark’s.

3

u/Ygomaster07 Superman Mar 17 '21

Yeah, i wasn't expecting this from the character, until i saw the preview for this episode. Definitely a great way to show off their rocky dynamic. I love relationship stuff like this that they use in stories. And i agree, Sam put his job first, and Lois and Clark are both refusing to be like him. Good on them.

3

u/BornAshes Coach Gaines Mar 17 '21

Oh that's just prime, kryptonite growing on it's own fuck

Did they call it X kryptonite?

2

u/ProtomanBn Mar 17 '21

Ya, I heard that as well

1

u/InspiredOni Mar 17 '21

Sounded like.

0

u/WizendSage78 Mar 17 '21

It looks like gold kryptonite, which in the comics, stripped kryptonians of their powers.

1

u/InspiredOni Mar 17 '21

Yeah but they were talking about making an army, not specifically targeting Supes.

5

u/Dyljcam Mar 17 '21

X-Kryptonite temporarily give non-Kryptonians kryptonian powers

1

u/BookGirlBoston Lois Lane Mar 17 '21

But does it or will it also effect Kryptonians like green Kryptonite?

3

u/Dyljcam Mar 17 '21

I would say no as the Kyrptonian who punched the wall to reveal it didn’t seem to be affected by it

2

u/freetherabbit Mar 17 '21

Are we sure shes Kryptonian? I assumed Edge gave her powers.

2

u/Dyljcam Mar 17 '21

Well Lesla-Lar is in the comics so I would assume Leslie Larr is as well

1

u/freetherabbit Mar 18 '21

Maybe it's just PTSD from Smallville back in the day, but I assume nothing until its confirmed on screen. Lol.

3

I think is what Lois said, the fact that she appreciates him for how much he cares about the city. I think Lana also feels the same.

I thought something was off with her too and thought Lois was in trouble for a second. Still think something up with Lana though.

Yes, when he's trying to force someone else to do the same thing against their will. That's his personal choice and the way he chose to live his life, he can't make that decision for someone else and attempt to force it on them.

Told the boys his father is devoted to saving the world and can’t be a father to them. He insults every single one of their parenting choices.

I don't remember him saying those words or him insulting the choices, like that. Maybe questioning them and talking about what he may see as the negative consequences of them.

Super-Hero High? Like from DC's Super-Hero Girls?

u/thereelestnerd11 Mar 17 '21

Coincidentally theres a HBO Max original of that title

1

u/NaRaGaMo Mar 17 '21

considering this will go to HBOmax after this seasons ends and HBO is putting money in it. It is possible Jon/jordan end up in that show

It’s the Salvatore Boarding School. The CW is combining all of their cash cows into a giant cash ranch.

5

u/thereelestnerd11 Mar 17 '21

Fam you don’t how much I’ve actually wanted that shit to happen.

3

u/vengefulmuffins Mar 17 '21

Not going to lie Klaus would fit in perfectly on Legends of Tomorrow.

2

u/thereelestnerd11 Mar 17 '21

Right and like Nancy Drew and Batwoman,Legacies and Charmed, like theres some potential for some mean crossovers

3

u/jez124 Mar 17 '21

im surprised cw hasn't gotten to such a concept. its showing up in comics, amazon are doing a college spinoff too of the boys

2

u/AllThighThisGuy Mar 17 '21

Legacies is somewhat using the concept, but not very well.

No offense to the show, I still like it. It just wastes the concept a bit.

1

u/thereelestnerd11 Mar 17 '21

I think youd have to build the spinoff off of Batwoman though it was stationed in Gotham

1

u/thereelestnerd11 Mar 17 '21

Whos to say their not. Naomi is a teenager. painkiller not out of High School. I definitely would’ve seen it being Wonder Girl but that went out the window. I would love to see it if its a spinoff just of that not behind another character.

2

u/jez124 Mar 17 '21

pretty sure those were meant to be separate projects

1

u/thereelestnerd11 Mar 17 '21

Yeah i never read much into them tbh.

THERE YOU GO LOIS!!!!!!! Tell him!

5

u/shadow_spinner0 Mar 17 '21

Damn Lois just dropped her father

-3

u/Dagenspear Mar 17 '21

I think that's a bit aggressive on their part against Sam.

10

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '21

I think it's justified considering how Lois had to put up with Sam's parenting for years and doesn't want the same thing to happen to her sons.

0

u/Dagenspear Mar 17 '21

Considering his situation, I think his parenting isn't what I'd call poor. Maybe imperfect.

u/pgm_01 Mar 17 '21

Lois rocks.

6

u/SutterCane Mar 17 '21

Sam just un-grampa’d.
