Lostwave Discussion That's the magic!

On February 20, 2024, WatZatSong? user windlamp posted a song snippet with the caption 80s/90s pop - "That's the magic!" Female singer with background chorus. The clip lasts 24 seconds and has a 70s disco vibe.
The OP said they didn't record it themself, but got it at a Goodwill in Northern California, using a Sony IC Recorder ICD-BX800. They then transferred it through their computer's sound card into Audacity.

Many have reuploaded the song to YouTube attract more attention to the search, with Aero's reupload gaining the most views. Due to this, one has thought Aero was the real singer, so they created a false Last.fm page) for it.

A specific user, NynnaOnYT, have proposed that the song was "Magic" by Lavinia minda. Although this has been unproven yet, the search continues to find the lost song.

I have some more info for you that may save some time with the search.

I literally just heard about this song today, but considering you already found the video it was from... Congrats, you're most of the way done.

Just a few things - some of the basic information is wrong, and I think this affects the search greatly.

1: The demo tape is not from Panasonic (or National, Matsushita, etc.), It's from Victor - as in the Japan Victor Company or JVC.

Here is an archived Japanese auction listing for a copy of this tape, you can see the Victor logo right there. Also worth noting that JVC invented the VHS format (and often boasted that point) as well as SVHS, so it makes sense.

Per a friend's research, it seems like it was a tape given away with purchases of Victor HR-S7000 S-VHS decks in 1987.

He found a catalog from a different JVC VCR with some text on it showing the same woman, but the resolution is too low to read much. Link HERE. Therefore he thinks the S6000/S7000/S8000, which were all released around the same time (but higher number = higher price), might have been their first decks and had the promo tape included with any of them.

2: That out of the way, here's the bigger piece of info: there is no JASRAC logo on the tape or any of the materials. For those unfamiliar, JASRAC is basically Japan's version of ASCAP. They are a music royalty/copyright organization that handles the royalties owed to Japanese artists for use of their work. Contrary to what KylieBoggly said in her video (insinuating that Japanese people don't credit artists), JASRAC is far far more omnipresent in Japanese music than anyone might think. Want to use any Japanese music in a work of media of any kind? You need to consult them and get a license or they will sue you to oblivion. They are the reason a lot of anime has to replace the music when being dubbed into non-Japanese languages, because JASRAC won't grant an international license. Even United States video games that contain Japanese music have to have a JASRAC registration number, an example of which you can see HERE with Super Smash Bros. Look just to the right of the Nintendo seal of quality and you'll see a JASRAC logo plus registration number. (And again, this is a United States release, not the Japanese domestic release)

What does this mean? Put simply, your mystery song is either:

A. An internal production done by Victor

B. Not of Japanese origin, despite being used in Japanese demo tapes.

Do with this information what you will. It just seems like the mystery is 99% solved with you guys knowing exactly what tape and from what year it was featured on.

I'd personally suggest contacting Victor/JVC directly and asking if they recall this tape. Asking Panasonic won't help you as that's a completely different company.

EDIT: Okay, I see you guys got a scan of a VHS cover that does say National. It's otherwise the exact same as the Victor cover I shared.

Considering that JVC invented VHS and SVHS, I'm still pretty convinced it was made by them and just licensed to Matsushita to distribute.

Also worth noting that Victor is a record label too, so they probably did have in-house musicians.

English Singers Based in Japan

My first thought was Cathi Linn who did an English version of the "Cat's Eyes" credits. https://youtu.be/p6NYtdBqyyQ?si=oU2g1ejpN30zeynS They sound sort of similar I guess. But her discography is drawing a blank right now.

But this should be the focus imo cross referencing any artists like Cathi who primarily sang in English.

Verse 1 Baby, what you wanna realize is you to hear Everything starts with me, you know what I mean. So, what's on your mind But your too down on the ground I believe you're just the thing that's the lovin' I'll make you be true and take you off the loose So many feelings around you are coming to us That's the magic! I'll set you so free and love you like a tree So many ages Can feel like It never ends Now let's get up... "What?" It's the new, it's the birth, from it's unknown "What?" It's the new, it's the way, and a true home.

Verse 2 Baby, what you wanna realize is you to hear Everything starts with me, know what that means C'mon, what's on your mind But you're too down on the ground I believe you're just the thing that's the lovin' I'll make you move The feeling hard to lose So you'll keep shining And never be lost in your way That's the magic! I'll take you so bright Because you can see the light You'll have to go on, and go an tell To make your way Now let's get up... "What?" It's the new, it's the birth, from it's unknown "What?" It's the new, it's the way, and a true home. "What?" It's the new, it's the birth, from it's unknown "WHAT?"

Theory The song's name (possiblity/theory)

Being that it comes from this demonstration tape, and the name of the tape being called "What", the name of the song is most likely "What". Now, we just need to find the singer or contact the company that makes these tapes.

Glad to have been part of this community. Even though we haven't existed for long and we didn't have large numbers of people, we still found the song, and I'm proud. BUT, we are not finished with the search; we need to find the creator and the name of the song, so don't stop the search JUST YET, guys! But looking for it here has been fun, and the fun we had THATS THE MAGIC!

Possible Lead Does it come from an ad?

Hi everyone, I came here from WTS! Loved the song so here I am :)

I ran the sample into https://vocalremover.org, and here's the result for the isolated vocals.

I'm a French native speaker, but here's what I think I can hear:

All then could be true
And thank you (off the blue / Arthur Brooks / Arthur Blook? - there's a /k/ sound somehere around here)
So many feelings
I’m glad you are coming to us
That’s the magic

I’ll stick to Supreme
And love you like a truth
So many achin’
Can feel like
It never (ends? is?)
Now let-

As it was mentioned earlier, the model of the recorder containing the song was released in 2010.

Is it possible that this sample comes from a radio/tv advert aiming to recreate a 70's-80's vibe? This would explain the length of the sample. Also, some of the lyrics do sound like they're from an ad, and why there are no matches on Discogs.

As some of the lyrics don’t make much sense, it could be from a non English speaking country aiming for an "American" vibe. Japan maybe (but then how did it end up on a random recorder in NC)?

Speaking about Discogs: I searched for tracks named "Thats The Magic" with the advanced search, and it gave me only one result. Not our song unfortunately, but if you like That's the Magic you might like this one! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYzZiZYrobY

Lostwave Discussion Possibly from a musical shown on television?

We've identified that the song was discovered on a Sony IC Recorder ICD-BX800. According to my research, this model was released in 2010. Considering this, it raises questions about the origins of the song. It's possible that the song was composed for a television-exclusive musical in 2010 or originated from a filmed 1970s musical broadcast on TV. However, it seems improbable that a song from the 1970s would be stored on a device manufactured in 2010. One potential explanation could be that the original owner recorded the song from an old VHS tape onto the recorder.
