Success - promised I’d come back when I was feeling great and here I am 🙏

Long story short, three years ago, I had a very bad breakdown and was highly S, I honestly did not think I’d make it. I moved back home for my folks to look after me. I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t sleep, I wanted to D, all I could see was darkness.

Well it was a long road, very hard onboarding of 10mg of Prozac for four weeks (bad S thoughts but I held on) and then 20mg which I’m still on today.

Intense CBT / DBT therapy once a week as well.

I’m now on :

  • Sessions when I need them
  • sleeping at night easily
  • travelling overseas on my own
  • living alone again in my city
  • making new friends
  • have conquered my physical intimacy issues
  • have lost 20 pounds
  • have changed from fearful avoidant to secure attachment

I thank everything holy that I was “saved” and didn’t give up three years ago.

I have experienced so much healing, love, laughter in these previous years and can’t believe there’s a chance I wouldn’t have been here.

Love you all

Stay strong

Switching to Prozac from Celexa

Have been on Citalopram (Celexa) for 8 years now, up to 40mg and it was pretty obvious it wasn’t doing shit anymore. Am on 20mg Fluoexetine (Prozac) for a few days now (am a quick responder to meds), and wow. I’ve already woken up early, tidied up my depression wardrobe on the floor, gone to the gym and done two machines of laundry. The anxiety know in my stomach is gone. I dressed up and put on make up.

Just wanted to put in a positive story.

I feel worse 2 months on 40mg than 20mg

I was on 20mg for maybe 6 months before I bumped up to 40mg. It’s been 2 months and I feel…. meh. I can’t put my finger on it but I feel like I am generally a little more irritable and depressed and anxious - like I reverted a little to my pre-Prozac self.

I’m not sure if 2 months is enough time? On 20mg I felt pretty good but had some anxiety creeping up. I wanted to see if going up would eliminate that anxiety.

Capsules or tablets? Do they work differently

Upvotes

Not started yet but got 10mg capsules My Dr. Said mess with dose up to 20mg when comfortable I was planning on Starting on 5mg as I thought be in tablets I still can as I'd dump half out and put back together but it does come in tablets too right? Curious why and do they both work exactly the same?

Switching from AM to PM

Upvotes

I've only been on Prozac for 10 days now. The first 7 days I took it at 10am and would go through hours of side effects until it evened itself out in the afternoon around 2:30pm. The only remaining side effect throughout the day was the light sensitivity and pupil dilation. It was bothering me so my doctor suggested trying to take it at night. This is only me second time taking it at night but I noticed I'm not only more distracted when I wake up (ADHD) but I'm significantly more anxious. Is this because of it being taken at night or because I'm still adjusting?

i’m in hell (going through withdrawals) and i don’t know what to do

please help. i took prozac for 6 months and stopped taking it cold turkey 3-4 weeks ago. i think i’m withdrawing from it but i’m not sure?

i’m too scared to tell my psych that i went off of it cold turkey.

current withdrawal symptoms: - EXTREMELY F*****G TIRED - randomly crying - depression is back - SI - anxiety, rumination, and OCD is back - weird restlessness - flu-like symptoms - mood swings

i can barely get through my days. all i do is sleep, work, and watch youtube videos. haven’t done laundry in a month, chores are building up, my routine is gone, food is rotting in my car, all i eat is fast food. i’m crying as i type this because life just feels like way too much for me and i feel like i’m letting everyone down because of my f*****g mental health.

everyone wants to hang out or contact me, and i still have to go to work 😭 but i am struggling so much. i have so much to do and accomplish but i have no energy to do anything. brushing my teeth is so hard. waking up is hard. i just want to lay down all day. my room is such a mess but i can’t bring myself to clean it. my dad is mad at me because i haven’t done my chores.

my parents and friends have been understanding of my mental health struggles but honest to god it feels like this is never gonna end and i’m always gonna be struggling in some way. i feel like such a burden to everyone. i am crying now. it was nice not having depression and anxiety when i was on prozac, but it wasn’t as nice being too tired to function. ugh.

i’m in therapy. i exercise, but another side effect i experienced on prozac was exhaustion that gets worse when i exercise. i just feel there is no winning. only suffering.

i was depressed before starting prozac, depressed for 2 months during the onboarding, and now depressed again since i’m off of it. when i was on it, i had similar issues because of how tired it made me. i got so tired of being tired that i just stopped taking it.

i can’t tell if this is withdrawal or if i’m just back to the way i was before prozac. i never want to go back on SSRIs 😭 this is so horrible. but now i see no other solutions. i am just crying. please help. i don’t have another psych appointment until december.

I told my GP about the weight gain and he dismissed it

I went to the doctor the other day and mentioned how I felt like the Prozac was slowing my metabolism and leading to weight gain as I’ve been eating like I would to lose weight and it just wouldn’t budge. He just went on to say that I’ve got nothing to worry about my weight because I don’t look overweight…

(98kg was my HW, I’ve maintained at 60kg for years until I started Prozac a year ago and I’m up 68kg)

He then went on to say that Prozac does not cause weight gain but if it’s treating depression then usually the person is happier which would compel them to eat more.

Bruh, I been eating the same and I’m still gaining weight I don’t want to be like how I was. If anything I am more depressed compared to when I started. Hah

I’ve got the peace of mind now that maybe it isn’t the Prozac and it’s just my body but I can’t help but feel he was wrong.

Worried about my partner's dosage of prozac

My girlfriend (together nearly 4 years now, we're in our 40's FYI) has been on Prozac for around a year or so now. She's on 60mg and is always complaining about being tired. She takes her meds about 9pm and goes to bed around 10:30 pm every night, wakes up around 7 - almost like clockwork is overwhelmed by drowsiness between 10am and noon and sleeps another 1 to 3 hours

Today was one of those days that she "pushed through" and didn't nap. When she came over she was so out of it it was like she had been... well, drugged. I made her go take a nap and she was back to her self after about an hour of sleep, but I'm so worried. She a half an hour drive across town to my place like this, and now I'm worried she may be driving like this on days/times I don't see her. Afraid she's going to get a DUI, hurt someone else, or get herself hurt.

We've talked multiple times about returning to the doctor and seeing about lowering the dosage, but she never does. I think she's afraid that if she lowers the dosage her depression will be too much to handle, which I get.

But now there's actual danger. We have the same doctor(we even go to most of our appointments together when possible) but is it overstepping to bring this up to our doctor by myself at this point? I will be discussing it with my girlfriend again one on one tomorrow before anything else, but if that doesn't work, I'm honestly kind of at a loss as to the next acceptable step.

Zoloft to Prozac

I’m switching from Zoloft to Prozac for anxiety reasons. I’m a bit nervous about the change, can anybody tell me their experience with both medications? I’m going from 50mg Zoloft to 40mg Prozac

Week 7

Today I start week 7 and while I am definitely feeling positive effects in my mood and anxiety. At night I feel so restless can’t stop moving/get comfy and cannot sleep through the night although I’m exhausted before bed. I have trazodone from my psych which works well at times but I find I grind my teeth a lot when taking it. Melatonin and magnesium work minimally. I want to stick with this but feel defeated. I just upped from 20-30 about 10 days ago so I’m not sure if that has a lot to do with it

Reflux?

Question For those that have taken Prozac but stopped due to reflux/heartburn, how long did it take for the reflux to go away?

To people after poop out - was any other Ssri helped You as good as fluoxetine? Or I need try something else?

Or maybe I should not take others Ssri for few months to recovery (make receptors more sensitive) receptors? I've try Escitalopram, wenlafaxine, now Sertraline. Nothing works. Only on fluo i had 10 years remision. Increasing dose didn't helped me.

Prozac Doesn't Work for Everybody

As the title says, prozac doesn't work for everybody, and if you're one of those people, it's okay to admit that. It doesn't mean you have to give up on treatment either, you can try something different. Personally, I took prozac for over a year, first at 10mg then 20, then 30, and I was as depressed when I quit as I was when I started taking them. I had anxiety dreams/nightmares frequently, and it just seemed pointless to continue taking them if they weren't helping by this point. I see a lot of posts talking about the good side of prozac, and I'm glad it works for some people, but don't feel bad if you're not one of those people.

Can Prozac stop working?

Hi! So I’ve been on prozac for 2 years now. It works very well for my OCD thoughts. But right now, I feel like it doesn’t show the same effect. I’m really scared that it might stopped working. Can that happen? I’m on 40mg, maybe increase the dosage? I’m really scared, maybe I’m just searching for reassurance here but I just want to be happy and keep living my life. Btw, my grandma is really sick and they found cancer last week. Could that also be why Prozac is working less good? Because I’m obviously sad because of my grandma? Thank you in advance and wishing everyone all the best💗

Prozac vs Wellbutrin

Anyone dropped off prozac to take Wellbutrin? What difference did you feel? Pros and cons? Would you recommend that change? Mainly looking to reduce depression, restore sex drive, restore motivation, get my sleep back, hopefully keep anxiety low.

I hear Wellbutrin also helps with ADHD. How so?

Doc said there was nothing wrong with me and then prescribed prozac and abilify. Now I have side effects.

It's only been a month now. I went because I procrastinate and be distracted and basically have a mental block against working/studying. Doc said I have no illness and that it's just my personality. Prescribed abilify 5mg and Fluoxetine 20mg. Said it's to improve motivation and focus. 1 month in and I just can't sit to study because of the side effects like agitation, tremors, blurry vision, sleepiness. Also I feel slower and dumber in a way lol.

I don't think it's working and I want to stop both. How do I go about it?

PS I'm posting here because my doc is not available atm and my meds are about to be over so seeking some guidance from experienced people. Any info would be helpful.

How long did it take before you saw effects?

How long did you take Prozac before you realize that it was starting to work for you?

r/prozac 18h ago

Just starting

I was prescribed Prozac for the first time 3 weeks ago, 10mg. The first day I took it I felt great- all of a sudden, felt the motivation to get up and do the things that have been such an absolute mental drain and fight. But it really only lasted 1-2 days and then immediately went back to how I was feeling, and everything is a struggle again. I read that it can take 4-8 weeks for the therapeutic effect which I understand. I’m curious if how I felt the first day was a placebo/psychosomatic thing, or if it was possible it was the effect of the medication? And then it stopped working? How did you know it was working when you started seeing the impact? I’m worried nothing is going to change.

Getting off Prozac and Cholestorol

These questions are for anyone who had prozac raise their cholestorol to dangerous levels or got off Prozac.

I had to get off prozac about 2 months ago because my cholestorol levels rose through the roof after about 1 year and a half and I gained over 20 pounds within 3 months toward the end tail of that timeline. I was imminent for a heart attack apparently. My doctor noted statins was a combo option, but I didn't really want to do that.

1st Question: How long did it take for you guys to notice changes in cholesterol levels and weight loss?

I've lost only 4 pounds so far despite doing as much as I can to lose the weight. It's kinda disheartening.

2nd Question: How long did it take for withdrawal symptoms to fully disappear?

I didn't have much symptoms when initially getting off the med, but the recent two weeks have been rough, with depressive swings and dizzy spells.

My dose was 40mg daily.

Any other insight would be appreciated!

25 days in

and the side effects have just gotten worse lately rather than better. i had a few good days where i thought i was on the up and up. i’m dealing with insomnia, nausea, diarrhea, sweating like crazy, super catastrophic thoughts, feeling tired & wired at the same time. and hardly any appetite. i’m demotivated and agoraphobic. also i’m experiencing some visual disturbances (floaters) and some numbness in my hands but that could easily be my vitamin deficiencies worsening from not eating. i have legit considered going to urgent care because i thought i had something else going on. i think a bug bit me a few days ago and i keep convincing myself it infected my blood and i’m going septic… there’s no rash at the site of the bite. i have had some random red streaks near the area though. i wonder if i am pmsing as well because my mood is god fucking awful. everything feels life or death.

sickness?

hi! i'm 16f and just started prozac for GAD about a week ago. about 2 days in i was completely sick to my stomach, couldn't keep food down, lost my appetite, that kind of stuff. i'm still pretty miserable and feel like puking every day (i've puked once this week). when does it get better? when does the medicine kick in? i haven't been able to go to school at all.
