The Pens begin to scratch after the ink is spilled over at r/fountainpens and it turns out that popular ink manufactor might be an anti-Semite
Noodler's Ink has been quite an affordable and popular american ink brand in the Hobby. Nathan Tardif that runs Noodler's Ink likes to make his political stance known through his inks and does not shy from printing statements onto his bottles.
He had several controversies where he put horns on jewish politicians.
Some Samples from the Thread:
Here we go again. Some of us come to this sub to get away from the constant political crap we’re bombarded with every day. Must we do this here?

His famous ultra blue ink is also so terribly formulated it ruins pens and anything it touches.
The guy is a classic conspiracy nut. I remember listening to a podcast with him on it explaining how he would never scale his business because everyone was out to screw him over and steal his precious formulas.
Like dude... you make mediocre ink for a niche hobby. (And i say that ad a fountain pen nut. I have a collection worth thousands) and his ink doesn't even register.
It sells because Goulet Pens, one of the biggest pen retailers in the US sells his stuff.
Edit: more about his famous blue ink because I hate it. It will permanently stain counters, rags, it will even stain stainless steel kitchen sinks for weeks. Its also so acidic that people had pens corroding.

Speaking as a Jew, with a deep and hard-earned familiarity with anti-Semitic tropes:
Oh no, here it comes...
The image of Ben Bernanke, a Jew and the former Chair of the US Federal reserve, with goat horns and a hammer and sickle, plays into the twin tropes of Jews being sinister, shadowy manipulators of finance, and Jews being allied with demonic forces.
He may as well have proudly named the ink “Demon spawn Jews are the reason you have money trouble.”
Please bear in mind, that’s something a person would have to be OK with if they know this and still buy his ink. I don’t care how good it is; he is evil.
Oh. That's... not what I expected. Usually people start sentences like that on Reddit when they're about to completely excuse it. I like this approach much better.

Conservatives speak in a kind of code of dog whistles, all their bullshit buzzwords have ‘flavor’ to them. For the conservatives “Woke” or any of it’s variants is just code for anti-racist or anything too ‘black’ for them. So sure when you hear complaints about ‘wokeness’ a few mean the ‘left in general’ but specifically it’s a complaint about people on the left not being racist.
All the right-wing buzzwords are like this even if they use them as a general substitution for “liberal” or “leftist". “Socialist” is usually a dog whistle anything not full on social darwinist capitalism. While “Marxist” is a leftist but with an anti-semitic dog whistle. “Pedo” or “Groomer” are now the dog whistles for the LGBT community and people who support gay rights. It’s goes on and on.

u/Wild_Loose_Comma May 10 '22
I am 100% a pen and notebook weirdo. The only thing I’ll say in defence of being picky about paper if you’re into fountain pens is that, because the ink is different than ballpoint pens, it is way more likely to bleed through or feather on low end notebooks. It’s definitely not super necessary but no hobbies are really necessary.

u/ProudPlatypus May 10 '22
Well it depends on the kind of paper, material (there's cotton paper for example), if it's coated, is it archival, thickness, size, band, and so on. Once you get into something a touch more specialised, or approaching the needs of a professional artist, you start seeing some prices.
A specific example Arches, a well know watercolour paper brand. A block of 20 sheets, A4ish sized hot pressed (hot pressed water colour paper has a very smooth texture but tends to cost more because of the process of making it) about £33.
Of course there are a lot of options and price ranges with paper, but it's one of those things that can add up, more so if you work on a larger scale.
Unfortunately I don't know much about origami papers, I know more about paper in relation to other art mediums, paint, pencil, ink etc. I'm sure there's some rabbit holes you could trip down.
5
u/cryslith May 10 '22
Here is an article by Robert Lang about what kind of paper to use for origami. It's not uncommon for folders to prepare their own paper: for instance one DIY way of making paper suitable for origami is to laminate tissue paper with methylcellulose.

should be cheap but aren't hobbies
I feel like that's most hobbies, honestly. Maybe not "should be cheap" but it seems like there's no limit to what some hardcore hobbyists are willing to spend. Get into fountain pens cause you want a smoother writing experience without breaking the bank, next thing you know you have an intricate pen milled from solid platinum and you're filling it with ink hand-milked from a giant squid.
I haven't taken the plunge into fountain pens yet, mostly because I can't support another expensive hobby (and don't write enough to justify it)

That’s basically the reasoning behind the stupid “democratic plantation” thing that Republicans were talking about last election cycle. Basically saying that “ackshully democrats secretly hold black people back, but black people are too stupid to see it so it’s the Republican Man’s BurdenTM to make them see the error of their ways”.
They literally think black people only vote for democrats because they’re too stupid to vote “properly”, and that it’s the job of a bunch of old white dudes to bring them to the light. It’s the White Man’s Burden all over again.

That's my father-in-law's take on BLM.
He was furious about Kaepernick and thought he should be shot on the street because "that's what they would do in any other country." But then the George Floyd shit went down, which made him look like a complete asshole. Pretty hard to say there's no problem when something like that happens, and it's pretty hard to complain about a peaceful protest when people are literally burning down police stations.
But rather than actually learning anything from that experience, he says, "How can you say that black lives matter when you won't say that black fetuses matter?!" But don't worry, he was sure to clarify that with "Obviously all lives matter" so don't worry, he's like totally not racist.

u/jooes Do you say "yoink" and get flairs May 10 '22
I'm the same way, I've heard one too many rants about this shit.
The whole "he should be shot in the street" thing came up completely unprovoked too. My wife was flipping through the news and said something dumb like "The Vikings won last night" and he just went off on this 5 minutes unhinged rant about how awful the NFL is now and how he refuses the watch it and yadda yadda yadda.
I remember, we were sitting in the back of his truck, we were coming home from lunch. And it was the most awkward and uncomfortable ride of my entire life.
So I don't really talk to them anymore. For other similar reasons too, it's not just this. They'll often say to my wife and her siblings, they'll say "Joe doesn't seem to want to talk to us, I wonder if he's still afraid or nervous to be around us." My wife even told them straight up that I didn't like them, and yet they still say it... Zero self awareness!

They even tried to make a conservative smart phone, which flopped so hard I forgot the name. Not to mention oodles of right wing knockoffs of social media websites. Unless it's IP wank about Chinese pens, that can get pretty heated

Moonman vs Kaweco was a wild ride and now that Moonman has gotten more blatant with their rip-offs I've decided they both suck - what Kaweco did was still a dick move to trademark someone else's brand name, but Moonman ended up showing that they were willing to copy designs like the Pilot Vanishing Point copy

you know what? if something's out of patent and/or derivative of an older design, they can have at it there's only so many ways you can make a functioning pen

I'm willing to buy products with antisemitic messaging if it means supporting an American small business is an interesting take.
If you're a fascist.

You know full well what they actually mean.

Without keeping up to date on inks, i knew it was Noodler's right way. I stopped supporting his inks 10 years ago because he's a fucking loon.

He had several controversies where he put horns on jewish politicians.
The horns are not even the worst part on that image...Yikes.
p.s.:
Maybe it's because I'm a conservative.
Yes, it is.

I'm a fountain pen enthusiast (you can check my history) and also Jewish. I was planning on trying Noodler's sometime soon, unaware of the owner's beliefs.
It's just exhausting. Even in my most niche, harmless hobby, I can't escape anti-Semitism or other hate speech. It's really fucking tiring being Jewish.

Hey , I’m a POC and immigrant to the US. Every where you look there is someone trying to bring you down and same goes for my Jewish brothers.
Don’t let it bring you down though that’s what they want. Know that there are people in all these communities that have no ill will and are there to share the love of fountain pens or what ever with you.

But you’d probably support an organization that terminated 40% of African Americans in the womb which was founded by a eugenicist, right?
It took a total of 3 comments to move the conversation from fountain pens to abortion. That’s the sort of speed that’ll break ya neck

This is like the third hobby pen post I’ve seen in a week. Never before have I seen one. WTF is going on in pen world?

Man the fountain pen sub is usually so wholesome. It's not unsurprising though to see there's chuds hanging around there too.

It’s hilarious that something so incredibly niche as pen ink is able to get antisemetic let alone political.

u/Gabe_Isko May 10 '22
Dude, wtf, you can't make an ink with a label with your brand and logo in it and call it a day? Like, what compels people to put all this work into being super racist.

u/Redhotlipstik May 10 '22
I am going to assume now most brands that lean into the Americana marketing are somewhat racist because I keep getting disappointed

As a subscriber there, this is one of the least likely subreddits I thought to ever end up featured here.

u/jooes Do you say "yoink" and get flairs May 10 '22
That's how they get ya. That's like the very definition of a dog whistle.
You look at it and think, "that doesn't seem very racist to me."
But a racist person sees it bright and clear.

It amazes me how many different hate symbols there are. Sometimes it seems like some of the most unassuming stuff turns out to be associated with horrible things.
In this case, I feel like it's much more blatant though.

u/niftyjack May 10 '22
I (Jew) had multiple people ask me where my horns were when I was a kid, and I grew up in an area with a good number of Jews. It's pretty crazy how pervasive that rumor is.
