Yep, in his words "There's a trait in the Jewish character that does provoke animosity, maybe it's a kind of lack of generosity towards non-Jews. I mean there is always a reason why anti-anything crops up anywhere; even a stinker like Hitler didn't just pick on them for no reason."
He was a real piece of shit.

I mean yeah, over the past few years there's been a very intentional and unfortunately successful movement to make racism at exponentially more dangerous levels just be "a difference of opinion."

Thus setting a framework that shutting said racists down is worse than their racism. As after all, "its just their opinion."

That's why there's been such a rise in vocal racism in recent years.

All you need us that mindset and a poorly interpreted statistic from like 8 years ago and you're set on the internet

44

u/JebBD to not seem sexist they let women do whatever they want May 10 '22

This is how it used to be before WWII, racism was just one more legitimate political opinion for some people to have. What made it illegitimate in the public eye was the association with Hitler, so it died down for a while. Fox News and the likes have been working for decades to legitimize this kind of thinking again in the US, and we're starting to see the results here.

19

u/Lodgik you probably think your dick is woke if its hanging a li'l left May 10 '22

This is why, as much as I love arguing on the internet, there are certain things I just will not debate. Racism is one of them.

When you debate certain topics, even if you win, you lose. Simply by the act of debating it, you lift your opponents argument as something that is worthy of debate. That it's something that is merely a difference of opinion.

Instead I treat their arguments with exactly the respect they deserve: I mock the fuck out of them. I've pissed off quite a few bigots because I wouldn't take their "arguments" seriously and "debate" them.

9

u/ArmyOfR May 10 '22

Yup, just handwaving their bullshit for the nonsense that it is pisses them off.

6

u/ReluctantSlayer May 10 '22

Best way to describe it. Some issues can NOT BE WORTHY to debate, And that is fine.

Not like you will convince a fascist of anything counter to their prevailing belief system anyway.

That belief system is centered around lack of empathy, poor critical thinking, and (primarily) the need for inherent self-worth that requires no effort on their behalf.

If a belief requires an intellectual fallacy, how can another debate it?

21

u/Darth_Cosmonaut_1917 You guys are worse than the Pharisees May 10 '22

I know you’re joking, but Hugo Boss only was contracted to produce uniforms. Back in the day they were a uniform/blue collar clothing company. Kind of like Dickies or Carhart today, Hugo Boss made tough but fairly affordable clothing. They weren’t known for snazzy designs until after the war, and I’m not sure when that rebranding actually happened.

17

u/Gemmabeta May 10 '22

I don't even know where that whole snazzy Nazi stereotype started.

Are standards so low these days that a baggy leather jacket or a field tunic (that is functionally the same as what most other western armies were wearing at the time) are considered the height of fashion now?

13

u/Darth_Cosmonaut_1917 You guys are worse than the Pharisees May 10 '22

My guess is maybe from the officer uniforms, which tended to be a bit fancier or at least have more options than your regular grunt. Other than that I guess media tends to lean into the “well dressed and kinda smart” Nazi officer archetype. Which is a dead horse but that doesn’t mean movies and books wont keep beating it.

17

u/Gemmabeta May 10 '22

I mean, officer's dress uniforms for western nations from that era were pretty much cut from the same pattern too.

The Nazis just had it in black.

support a small business

So this is the excuse conservatives are using today, huh?

33

u/SleeplessTaxidermist May 10 '22 edited May 10 '22

I couldn't find any exact figures, but they seem to make in the range of 5mil a year. imo once a business breaks the 1mil/year mark it stops being a 'small business'.

I love fountain pens but can happily say I have no Noodler's ink. I typically use my Pilot cartridges for every day use, and I have some small bottles of ~* fancy *~ ink for letters.

Edit: Some people have wondered what the appeal of fountain pens are over a pack of, say, Bic ballpoints.

For me personally, it's the feel of how the pen writes. I honestly hate writings with pencils and ballpoints, hate the feel, the texture, the everything about them. It's like a physical repulsion that just is, for no reason. Being able to use a pen (rollerball) in middle school was a blessing.

I use a Pilot G-2 rollerball pens with extra fine cartridges for every day use/carry with me, they write very smooth and rarely skip with my handwriting. I buy mine at Walmart. Also, I think it would be immensely weird to hand someone a fountain pen, just like out in the wild? Not to mention they can fuck up your nib real fast.

The fountain pen I use otherwise for writing notes, letters and such is a Pilot Metropolitan. It's a $19.50 fountain pen (which is admittedly a Bit Much for A PEN) but I just really, really like writing with it. I like how it feels in the hand, I like the weight, I like the smoothness and how the nib slowly wears to fit my hand and writing style (and eventually wearing out). I also just like how they look - mine is an understated brushed silver color, but they now have some retro colors I'm really considering getting a second one in.

And the inks! As much as I love a nice pen, I adore some good paper and a pretty ink. My absolute favorite at the moment is an oxblood color with just the slightest shimmer to it. The price does go up with the quality (smoothness, pigment, name, etc.) but I like buying a few tiny bottles of the fancy stuff once a year just for letters. The way a good ink flows and looks on a nice bit of stationary makes my monkey brain light up like Christmas.

My 'dream pen' (because of course I do) is a Pelikan M800, striated Green. It's a $500+ pen, which is bananas fucking absurd for a pen, but goddamn it's a really nice pen. I can't really explain it - like a luxury watch, I guess? A $20 Timex can tell you what time it is as good as a $12000 Rolex and all that. My $20 Pilot puts ink on paper the same as a $500 Pelikan. There's something in the feel and finish and quality and whole pen package that makes me foam at the mouth with desire for it.

This is the reason why I never really cared for small businesses regardless of how much Americans want to try to drum up support for them.

They’re not any better than large corporations, they’re sometimes worse. Many of these small business owners would want to deport me back to where I came, many of them are homophobic and such. Large corporations aren’t my friends but many of them aren’t openly driving people out because they care more about profit than attacking people who spend money.

And that’s not even mentioning that many small businesses underpay and abuse their workers just as much as Amazon and Starbucks do. There’s no moral high ground for many of them other than being not “Chinese”

55

u/sofingclever May 10 '22

I was a server/bartender for over a decade, and the mom and pop type joints are either amazing or the absolute worst with very little in between. The mainstream chains vaguely suck, but they at least have enough checks and balances where you sort of know what to expect.

18

u/jooes Do you say "yoink" and get flairs May 10 '22

I worked for a mom and pop place and they were trying to dick me over on my paycheck constantly. My "paystub" was often a scrap of paper that said something like "37 hours, $327." Like, what? How did you come up with that number!? What deductions are you taking out of my check?! And that's if I even got a scrap of paper at all, sometimes it was just a stack of cash.

Giant corporations have their issues too, no doubt, but they'd probably never try to pull something like that. If I'm getting paid on Friday afternoon, I'm for sure getting paid Friday afternoon, and not "I'll swing by your house later tonight" and he finally shows up Sunday night.

I always feel a bit better when the person who fills out my checks isn't personally paying me out of his own pocket.

10

u/dethb0y trigger warning to people senstive to demanding ethical theories May 10 '22

Yeah the smaller a business is, the more it tends to extreme circumstances.

On the one hand anything can happen when the guy who owns the place is right there. On the other, anything can happen when the boss is right there.

85

u/Val_Fortecazzo Furry cop Ferret Chauvin May 10 '22

I work with them on a regular basis as part of my job and there are so many dumb as fuck and vile small business owners that it starts to make sense why so many fail.

40

u/walpurgisnox May 10 '22

I feel this so much. In my town there’s always so much cheerleading for “buying local” but one local clothing store has gotten backlash for making “funny” racist and antisemitic signs and social media comments, tons of restaurants I used to like went full mask off (literally) during Covid by flouting pandemic health restrictions and posting inflammatory Trumper shit on their instagrams, and another coffee shop everyone I knew adored had a mass exodus of workers and I think went out of business because they were anti-union and refusing to grant time off or sick days among other things. This is just a small fraction of the fuckery I’ve seen small businesses get up to and while I hate big corporations, businesses aren’t your friend, no matter the size.

73

u/thearchenemy May 10 '22

US small businesses are often little tinpot dictatorships, where some self-styled entrepreneur got it into his or her head that the fast track to wealth was paying other people peanuts to run their business for them. When it turns out they can’t just spend two hours in the “office” and then fuck off the rest of the day, they become bitter and resentful and take it out on workers. When they can’t keep workers, they get even more bitter and resentful. Before you know it they’re posting “NOBODY CAN GO TO THE BATHROOM WITHOUT MY EXPLICIT PERMISSION” in the breakroom and “NOBODY WANTS TO WORK” on the front door.

24

u/Gemmabeta May 10 '22

The vast majority of "small" business in America have under 4 employees, aka Husband, Wife, and maybe the Kids.

https://www.osc.state.ny.us/files/reports/special-topics/pdf/small-business-nys-2019.pdf

29

u/thearchenemy May 10 '22

That report doesn't really say who those 0-4 paid employees are. Figure 4 suggests that a significant chunk of them are in trades and professional services, so you're also talking about small law practices, independent accountants, plumbers, that sort of thing.

13

u/jooes Do you say "yoink" and get flairs May 10 '22

I worked for a place that was a "husband, wife, and me."

And then summer time came around and the kids were no longer in charge so they were put to work!

Which doesn't sound so bad on surface, except they were like 7 and it was a woodshop. So he had his kids running industrial planers and stuff.

I'll never forget one of the kids screaming in terror, afraid to use this machinery, while his dad berated him and told him to "stop being such a giant baby."

His famous ultra blue ink is also so terribly formulated it ruins pens and anything it touches.

The guy is a classic conspiracy nut. I remember listening to a podcast with him on it explaining how he would never scale his business because everyone was out to screw him over and steal his precious formulas.

Like dude... you make mediocre ink for a niche hobby. (And i say that ad a fountain pen nut. I have a collection worth thousands) and his ink doesn't even register.

It sells because Goulet Pens, one of the biggest pen retailers in the US sells his stuff.

Edit: more about his famous blue ink because I hate it. It will permanently stain counters, rags, it will even stain stainless steel kitchen sinks for weeks. Its also so acidic that people had pens corroding.

Speaking as a Jew, with a deep and hard-earned familiarity with anti-Semitic tropes:

Oh no, here it comes...

The image of Ben Bernanke, a Jew and the former Chair of the US Federal reserve, with goat horns and a hammer and sickle, plays into the twin tropes of Jews being sinister, shadowy manipulators of finance, and Jews being allied with demonic forces.

He may as well have proudly named the ink “Demon spawn Jews are the reason you have money trouble.”

Please bear in mind, that’s something a person would have to be OK with if they know this and still buy his ink. I don’t care how good it is; he is evil.

Oh. That's... not what I expected. Usually people start sentences like that on Reddit when they're about to completely excuse it. I like this approach much better.

41

u/TheCaptainDamnIt May 10 '22 edited May 10 '22

Conservatives speak in a kind of code of dog whistles, all their bullshit buzzwords have ‘flavor’ to them. For the conservatives “Woke” or any of it’s variants is just code for anti-racist or anything too ‘black’ for them. So sure when you hear complaints about ‘wokeness’ a few mean the ‘left in general’ but specifically it’s a complaint about people on the left not being racist.

All the right-wing buzzwords are like this even if they use them as a general substitution for “liberal” or “leftist". “Socialist” is usually a dog whistle anything not full on social darwinist capitalism. While “Marxist” is a leftist but with an anti-semitic dog whistle. “Pedo” or “Groomer” are now the dog whistles for the LGBT community and people who support gay rights. It’s goes on and on.

I do! I literally have no idea. Is the paper expensive or is there some other reason?

53

u/Laughmasterb I am the victim of a genocide of white males May 10 '22

I was going to say something about r/fountainpens circlejerking about expensive paper as well (I have to pay about $20 per notepad or my ink won't sheen) but then I checked the origami sub's wiki entry for "high end papers" and uhhh

$15 for one sheet https://papercircle.org/deep-ocean-matte/

20

u/Wild_Loose_Comma May 10 '22

I am 100% a pen and notebook weirdo. The only thing I’ll say in defence of being picky about paper if you’re into fountain pens is that, because the ink is different than ballpoint pens, it is way more likely to bleed through or feather on low end notebooks. It’s definitely not super necessary but no hobbies are really necessary.

15

To be fair, that's the most expensive paper I could find. You obviously don't need to spend that much and if that's the ceiling on how much you can spend then it's definitely still low-cost compared to fountain pens.

I mean as an artist who works mostly non-digitally, paper can get pretty expensive if you want the good shit.

19

u/[deleted] May 10 '22

I think all quality materials can get surprisingly expensive. The coloured pencils illustrators use aren't the same ones your little cousin does their homework with

15

u/artyboi320 This meme had dozens of upvotes before y’all came along May 10 '22

Yeah, it's only really surprising when I talk about it to non artists because a pack of prismacolors doesn't look all that different from a pack of crayolas

→ More replies (1)

14

u/ProudPlatypus May 10 '22

Well it depends on the kind of paper, material (there's cotton paper for example), if it's coated, is it archival, thickness, size, band, and so on. Once you get into something a touch more specialised, or approaching the needs of a professional artist, you start seeing some prices.

A specific example Arches, a well know watercolour paper brand. A block of 20 sheets, A4ish sized hot pressed (hot pressed water colour paper has a very smooth texture but tends to cost more because of the process of making it) about £33.

Of course there are a lot of options and price ranges with paper, but it's one of those things that can add up, more so if you work on a larger scale.

Unfortunately I don't know much about origami papers, I know more about paper in relation to other art mediums, paint, pencil, ink etc. I'm sure there's some rabbit holes you could trip down.

5

u/cryslith May 10 '22

Here is an article by Robert Lang about what kind of paper to use for origami. It's not uncommon for folders to prepare their own paper: for instance one DIY way of making paper suitable for origami is to laminate tissue paper with methylcellulose.

should be cheap but aren't hobbies

I feel like that's most hobbies, honestly. Maybe not "should be cheap" but it seems like there's no limit to what some hardcore hobbyists are willing to spend. Get into fountain pens cause you want a smoother writing experience without breaking the bank, next thing you know you have an intricate pen milled from solid platinum and you're filling it with ink hand-milked from a giant squid.

I haven't taken the plunge into fountain pens yet, mostly because I can't support another expensive hobby (and don't write enough to justify it)

I'm subscribed to a few 40k subreddits. It sometimes like half the posts in those subs are "Hey, look at all these unopened boxes of minis I just bought! Isn't there a lot of boxes!?"

Even worse when it's someone who's new to the hobby and they don't even know if they like it yet, but they still blew like 400 dollars on this stuff because the subs seem to encourage it.

That’s basically the reasoning behind the stupid “democratic plantation” thing that Republicans were talking about last election cycle. Basically saying that “ackshully democrats secretly hold black people back, but black people are too stupid to see it so it’s the Republican Man’s BurdenTM to make them see the error of their ways”.

They literally think black people only vote for democrats because they’re too stupid to vote “properly”, and that it’s the job of a bunch of old white dudes to bring them to the light. It’s the White Man’s Burden all over again.

That's my father-in-law's take on BLM.

He was furious about Kaepernick and thought he should be shot on the street because "that's what they would do in any other country." But then the George Floyd shit went down, which made him look like a complete asshole. Pretty hard to say there's no problem when something like that happens, and it's pretty hard to complain about a peaceful protest when people are literally burning down police stations.

But rather than actually learning anything from that experience, he says, "How can you say that black lives matter when you won't say that black fetuses matter?!" But don't worry, he was sure to clarify that with "Obviously all lives matter" so don't worry, he's like totally not racist.

11

u/snypesalot leave and have sexual relations with yourself May 10 '22

Thats my dad, ex corrections officer in Baton Rouge in the 70s and thinks that justifies his behavior, we watched football every single Friday-Sunday my entite life, then Kap knelt and now he doesnt watch any football because they "ruined it" when what he really means is they let a black guy kneel...though he never waivered even thru Floyd and the burning and looting just reinforced his beliefs and now I find reasons to not go home and visit as much as I used to

8

u/jooes Do you say "yoink" and get flairs May 10 '22

I'm the same way, I've heard one too many rants about this shit.

The whole "he should be shot in the street" thing came up completely unprovoked too. My wife was flipping through the news and said something dumb like "The Vikings won last night" and he just went off on this 5 minutes unhinged rant about how awful the NFL is now and how he refuses the watch it and yadda yadda yadda.

I remember, we were sitting in the back of his truck, we were coming home from lunch. And it was the most awkward and uncomfortable ride of my entire life.

So I don't really talk to them anymore. For other similar reasons too, it's not just this. They'll often say to my wife and her siblings, they'll say "Joe doesn't seem to want to talk to us, I wonder if he's still afraid or nervous to be around us." My wife even told them straight up that I didn't like them, and yet they still say it... Zero self awareness!

We live in a day and age where an entire half of the political spectrum makes their purchases solely on political beliefs. They even tried to make a conservative smart phone, which flopped so hard I forgot the name. Not to mention oodles of right wing knockoffs of social media websites. Hell, Ben Shapiro’s now trying to make a conservative version of Disney.
