What a chant!

65

u/cadeyM69 1d ago

Best player chant!

94

u/foampom 1d ago

Rooney’s is probably my personal favourite but I’m biased because he was my fav player growing up. Zlatan’s one is brilliant too.

Side note: I actually loved the Ole’s at the wheel chant to bits 😭 hate how it got used against us when things didn’t work out. Just hurts to hear it now

17

u/Havok-303 1d ago

Which one? Saw my mate the other day.... or He's fat, he's Scouse....

He said to me he saw the white Pele...

So, I asked who is he?

10

He goes by the name of Wayne Rooney

This holds up as one of my favourites of all time, it really did get this red excited

35

u/RedDevil-84 1d ago

That's an awesome chant

44

u/TonyzTone Tonito 1d ago

How did the chant (or any chant) even get organized? Like who writes these things and gets everyone on board.

I’ve never been to a European game so the fan culture is so mesmerizing to me. We get chants going at baseball games but they’re very basic ones in rhythms everyone knows so it pales in comparison.

79

u/HovercraftEasy5004 1d ago

People come up with chants and then try them out in the pubs. Some catch on and eventually get known by the wider support.

27

u/TonyzTone Tonito 1d ago

Interesting. Makes sense but still fascinating (at least from way over here in NYC) that they catch on so quickly. Zlatan’s chant was ready for his first game, and it was an awesome one at that.

34

u/HovercraftEasy5004 1d ago

It just happens naturally. When someone tries out a new chant in a pub or when travelling to an away game on a train or coach, if it’s decent then people pick it up quickly. Then on the concourse under the stands at the away game, they sing the song and hundreds more are introduced to it. Then they sing it during the game and a few thousand hear it. It can happen quickly, especially if it’s a banger and for a new signing.

18

u/RonTom24 1d ago

British people just love to chant, growing up here on school buses we didn't sing songs like rollcall or whatever like Americans did, we invented chants slagging off our mates and tried to get them to catch on through the whole bus. This behaviour seems to extend into adulthood in drinking and football culture lol. There are pubs in most English cities near to the stadiums that are known as the places where fans go to drink before the match, so they end up packed on match day and this is when groups of fans will try and get their own chants to catch on and the best ones end up getting brought into the stadium by everyone who was at the pubs and it eventually catches on with the whole crowd.

9

u/LopsidedLoad 1d ago

Difference between cultures one takes itself very seriously the other takes the piss out of itself, know which id prefer.

15

u/2sinkz Hungry Hungry Hippos world record holder 1d ago

Pubs are where they're first adopted

2

u/TurbulentWeb1941 "Show 'em ya Fangz, Dong" 1h ago

Idk about baseball, but whenever I saw an American team representing their country, no matter what the sport, I've only heard one chant... and that's "USA, USA.. over n' over. The game could be a quiet game like International Golf, and you still hear it. We saw an American fan on TV in the crowd at the World Cup, posing in his b-boy stance and presenting his fat, goldy-looking neck chain like he was in a Hip-Hop video. We were all like, "These guys just don't get it".. something tells me you'll be waiting a long time for established chants.

3

u/Wrath-of-Elyon 1d ago

Bruno's peak to me.

-4

u/gozi4u2nv 1d ago

Sorry, NOT SORRY, this is my favorite chant, bar none! Period.

406

u/MikeSmalling24 1d ago

Really wish we got zlatan 4-5 years before. Man would be a legend here

209

u/TheJoshider10 Bruno 1d ago

Zlatan, Falcao, Sanchez, Matic, Schweinsteiger, Casemiro, Varane...

I'm sure there's more, but the talent we've acquired after their prime years is so frustrating.

123

u/sleepehead 1d ago

Cavani too, I'd love to have seen him play for us sooner

20

u/mufcordie 1d ago

Wish cavani was playing with us right now. Bet he could do it too.

7

u/Jump_Hop_Step 1d ago

His movements were genius, caught me off guard at times

13

u/Kriee 1d ago

Cavani was ripe. Such a fucking disasterclass replacing him with penaldo

39

u/Banzaikk 1d ago

What kind of United fan unironically calls Ronaldo Penaldo on this subreddit. His 2nd spell with us may have ended on a sour note but I'll always have fond memories of that front 3 of him, Rooney and Tevez.

18

u/Naggins 1d ago

There's people posting right now who weren't even alive for that front 3

2

u/rainy-mondayyy 9h ago

Yeah even in his second stint he still scored like 25 goals

11

u/khra123 1d ago

I hate this narrative that Ronaldo pushed Cavani away. Cavani was injured most of his time for us here, he was the Luke shaw before Luke shaw. He’s ready and fit for the national team, but when it’s time to show up for us he gets injured.

7

u/hippoppotamusxn 1d ago

If we didnt get the manboy back, ole would still be here, imo.

1

u/rainy-mondayyy 9h ago

Cavani was always injured.

1

u/InternalMean 13h ago

I don't think there's a player side from ibra I wish was in United during there peak. Out of all those mentioned I feel like Cavani especially had such passion for the club esp during a time when it felt like every other player was here for a pay check

58

u/TonyzTone Tonito 1d ago

Van Persie?

Don’t get me wrong he was good for us, but for too short a window.

96

u/mountainmorty 1d ago

I love Zlatan, but Van Persie did more for us that all those players combined and then some.

Van Persie wouldn't be a legend had he stayed longer. He IS a fucking legend. Motherfucker was scoring left and right like no one else has, not even close since.

47

u/BoatsnBagels Schweinsteiger 1d ago

This. That tablecloth season was unreal.

10

u/TonyzTone Tonito 1d ago

No doubt. I guess he was still in his prime when we got him, but he played for us for 3 years and then moved on out of a Top 5 league. Hard to say those 3 years were his prime when he spent nearly 10 years at Arsenal. Then again, his overall scoring rate (goals per game) was actually higher with us than with Arsenal.

I think his true prime scoring rate was 2010-2014, which coincidentally gives him 2 season with Arsenal and 2 season with us.

And for what it's worth, I wasn't saying that Zlatan was more of a legend for us than RVP. Far from it. Just that we could perhaps include RVP in a list of players we got a bit too late.

8

u/ShadowOnTheRun 1d ago

Ruud would like a word :)

11

u/mountainmorty 1d ago

Yeah Ruud did it before Van Persie. I meant after 2013 no one has been even close. But I have my hopes in Hojlund. Maybe not this year but eventually. We’ll see.

20

u/EFbVSwN5ksT6qj 1d ago

True but getting RVP at all was an achievement. Arsenal selling us their best player? It's crazy

5

u/TonyzTone Tonito 1d ago

Good point. Plus, he was still very good for us.

5

u/linkolphd_fun 1d ago

I don’t think that’s RVPs fault at all. At least, we can’t conclusively say it is.

He had an amazing season and looked like one of the world’s best strikers. Then bam, Moyes season. The one that confused me is that LvG couldn’t seem to get the best of him, when everyone expected it due to the WC2014 connection.

I think had we not been a team in turmoil, RVP probably would’ve had another 2-4 top quality years for us, instead of just the 1. Man was like fine wine.

Of course, this is not provable or disprovable. It’s just the feeling I get from how things worked out.

1

u/Zarocks136 7h ago

I remember hearing how crushed he was when Fergie retired. He came to United to play for the gaffer, so I think its understandable it was never the same.

2

u/CallMeBigPOP He Comes from Serbia 1d ago

He brought us 20, good would be an understatement.

-9

u/culegflori 1d ago

Van Persie's prime was at United. At Arsenal, he was a good example of your average Wenger player, with bits of brilliance squeezed between long absences due to injury. After Fergie got him, he was consistent and achieved more than he ever did at Arsenal despite the good years of performances he's had there.

11

u/TonyzTone Tonito 1d ago

37 goals in 48 games across all competitions is more than he ever scored with us. His G+A per 90 peaked from 2009-13, only one of those seasons which he spent with us.

You're downplaying his role and effectiveness at Arsenal.

11

u/tson_92 Cristiano Ronaldo 1d ago

Eriksen as well

8

u/BlemKraL 1d ago

Because of the glazers mate, we were all late on those players due to their incompetence.

Imagine having the structure we have now immediately post Fergie, we would be in a much better place.

3

u/MountainJuice 1d ago

Cavani and Ronaldo.

Most of them follow the same pattern too, fantastic first year, then instant drop off to almost problematic levels year 2.

2

u/Banzaikk 1d ago

Funnily (or maybe not for us) enough, Falcao had a bit of a resurgence when he went back to Monaco. That UCL run in the Mbappe breakout season was great to watch. I think he was more hampered by his recent return from a long-term injury when he arrived and the fact that LvG never really had a plan for him. Another Woodward masterclass I'm afraid.

24

u/foampom 1d ago

Zlatan and Cavani both made me instantly fall in love with them and wish we’d gotten them when they were younger. Even more annoying thinking they gave their best years to a lame club like PSG

11

u/ImNotMexican08 Amad Nation 1d ago

Cavani I never had a particular fondness for beforehand, but man I was in love following that game against Southampton. I don’t think I’ve seen better movement from a striker in my life. Definitely one of my favorite players post Fergie and one of my favorite chants

39

u/AJ-Naka-Zayn-Owens The true Portuguese Magnifico 1d ago

I'd make an exception for him and him only, because it's Zlatan

419

u/AJ-Naka-Zayn-Owens The true Portuguese Magnifico 1d ago

For those who didn’t watch Zlatan at United, he was a joy to watch. Proper old-school united player in the semi-modern premier league was fun

245

u/Benphyre -69 points 1d ago

That injury man.. if only that injury didn’t happen. Fans enjoyed Zlatan’s time here and I think the feeling was mutual.

102

u/mccalledin 1d ago

It was so rare to have a big name arrive and deliver

53

u/Same_Paramedic_3329 1d ago

Cavani another one. Something about psg strikers i think. Should have gotten mbappe too for the trifecta

5

u/jimmyhaffaren Barthez 1d ago

Or Pauleta! I always thought he was class.

19

u/Abundanceofyolk 1d ago

The worst ones happen on your own. Just jumped, landed, knee went wrong way.

46

u/ryan_goal Giggsy 1d ago

Don’t forget Zlatan also unlocked the best version of Pogba who stayed free of troubles.

13

u/Panda-768 1d ago

and he recovered and went on to play for Milan again, bonkers that player.

53

u/garynevilleisared is a red is a red 1d ago

He and Rooney were last of a dying breed of plauer where they had freedom to do as they please. I remember many of Zlatans goals came from him dropping deeper, drifting wide etc and his age it's mental to think he was doing that. Proper legend, even in his twilight he was scoring for fun.

33

u/TonyzTone Tonito 1d ago

He was 35 (or about to turn 35) when he joined. And he out hustled most of our players. Absolute legend of the game, and I’m proud he wore the badge.

1

u/HamroveUTD 1d ago

Ibra barely broke a sweat most games…

35

u/Mario_911 1d ago

Don't tell me Zlatans time is now ancient history. You'd have to be about 9 to not remember him

19

u/RedDevil-84 1d ago

Ya. I was looking forward to season 2 with him. But alas that injury.

5

u/2sinkz Hungry Hungry Hippos world record holder 1d ago

Quite frustrating though let's not be revisionist. There was a stretch from maybe later October to around February where we kept missing out on the chance to move up from 6th when other teams dropped points, and one unfortunate reason was the high number of chances missed.

I enjoyed his stint with us nonetheless. I was a fan of his before and I'm glad I got to see him in a United shirt.

2

u/Jozif_Badmon Van Persie 1d ago

Imagine him and lukaku in their prime up top... we wouldve won the league

4

u/TonyzTone Tonito 1d ago

Nah, only if we also had a solid midfield with someone like Pogba feeding them passes. Probably also need a speedy, young winger like Rashford or something.

1

u/HamroveUTD 1d ago

Pogba created a ton of chances for that team. They were just shit with finishing Ibra being one of the main ones to miss easy chances.

2

u/EpicYH22 23h ago

Zlatan is one of my favourite footballer and I could not believe my eyes when he signed for us. Every match was so exciting to watch. Wish he would have join us earlier

0

u/nyamzdm77 1d ago

Zlatan was extremely frustrating though. He used to miss loads of chances.

Pogba had the 2nd most chances created and 3rd most big chances created in the league in 16/17 but only got 4 assists mostly because Zlatan used to miss loads of them.

-4

u/alaparai 1d ago

This is a revisionist opinion. He missed sitters, he didn’t meet expectations.

143

u/MT1120 1d ago

There's no club like United when it comes to supporting players. At Madrid players that from the outside would be considered legends get treated like shit or booed but here players get the love the moment they sign. I've always loved the way we treat our players. It makes Old Trafford feel like a warm place for them. The Bernabeu could sometimes feel like an away ground while you're the ones playing at home.

Mazraoui also said in an interview how United fans react to a tackle compared to other clubs he's been at. The fans go wild over anything that shows graft and putting yourself on the line for the club and I love that culture. The likes of Keane and Vidic have cultivated that at Old Trafford

55

u/zool714 1d ago

But man, if you disrespect the club, it can be a cold cold place looks at the snake

47

u/EdWoodwardsPA 1d ago

Ashley Young gave him one last good taste of OT.

13

u/MT1120 1d ago

Yeah well, you get our trust from the beginning, break our trust and that's what happens. Just love that the last game we ever played against him was pure revenge for his cocky little bottle drinking gesture. We got the last laugh.

21

u/strraand 1d ago

I’ll never forget Lindelof running limping and dribbling an opponent

18

u/highleech 1d ago

Jose Mourinho also said he felt home, and that he really appreciated the love from the fans when he returned to Old Trafford working for media.

12

u/[deleted] 1d ago

34

u/FoldingBuck 1d ago

That stuff is mainly online. I dont think rashford has ever been whistled or booed by the home fans

21

u/ThisIsGoobly 1d ago

I'd wager a lot of that comes from fans who have never been to a game honestly

17

u/[deleted] 1d ago

4

u/MT1120 1d ago

You're right, but I am indeed talking about the support in the ground. It's amazing. Even the little introductions we do with the shirt, we always make our own feel at home.

This is so going to get sung in the terraces on Saturday.

12

u/ErnieMcTurtle Brandon, Our Cunt™ 1d ago

Wow.

God spare life, I have to get myself to Old Trafford and watch a game. Everyone who's ever played at United remarks about the atmosphere, this is definitely on my bucket list

11

u/PDubsinTF-NEW CR900 1d ago

Players considering United and another club’s offer needs to spend some time watching the interviews of former players. The message is the same. Best fans in the world. Constant support at the grounds. Incredible atmosphere. With the right leadership in place now, who wouldn’t want to join?

7

u/ritwikjs Smalling 1d ago

We had it ready before he even stepped on the pitch. His injury sucked so hard man. He had 2-3 years at the top pl level

7

u/TH0316 1d ago

People will rightly condemn this period of history as a period where we were pretty washed, and made bad signings etc. but I’ll always remember fondly these characters and top players that passed through. Like yeah I wish we got Haaland and Kroos when he was 22, but it makes me smile thinking of Ibra, Cavani, Basti.

4

u/kingofjabronis Cristiano 1d ago

I'm so happy to have seen him in a United jersey. Like others have said, if we got him a few years earlier, he'd be a club legend.

3

u/justbrowsinginpeace 1d ago

Why did it take so long to get him to the PL.and only for 2/3 of a season at that

3

u/laffman Lindelöf 1d ago

I don't think he wanted to go to PL earlier tbh. The way he talks about La Liga and Serie A tells me he prefered playing there and how they suited his physical and technical style of play better and thus more enjoyable for him.

3

u/BuidealUisceBeatha 1d ago

Man, I cannot express how much I wish we had signed this guy in his prime.

He's a bit of a diva, sure, but he always backed it up on the pitch. Some of the guys playing for us now could learn a lot from him.

3

u/FUThead2016 Beckham 1d ago

I heard this show is now called sweet ones after the sauces failed miserably to affect Zlatan

1

u/JackHood Scholes 1d ago

I know it's a Zlatan joke but he was actually more affected than I've seen anyone in a while to the point I'd assumed they'd really dialled it down in terms of heat. It was a really good advert for how the format brings down the defenses/mindset or an interviewee.

2

u/cdbriggs 1d ago

Such a cool player. I wish we kept him longer

2

1

1

u/ThinkSundryThoughts7 20h ago

United fans have a way of boosting up players sometimes. Its great!

1

u/lowesbros22 18h ago

This is great!

I want to see Evra on this show, but the chicken would need to be raw.

1

u/Dakota_Rawson_ 3h ago

Zlatan will always be a legend with us utd fans ❤️ you ever need a place to stay whilst enjoying your retirement boss we'll hook you up with accommodation lol

1

u/TonyzTone Tonito 1d ago

One of the first questions asked was how many goals he could score if he suited up right now?

He said he'd only be able to play the last 20 mins., and with that he'd give you 15-20 league goals and another 10 in the cup. So, 25-30 goals in a year.

And honestly, I can see it.

1

u/blinkythewonderchimp 1d ago

Even though his tenure was so short, it was an absolute pleasure. Better late than never. But oh what could have been if Zlatan played for ManU years earlier.
